Dispersion properties in a cascade three level system from a thin atomic vapor film

Abstract

The unexpected dispersion properties of transmitting wave from a thin vapor of cascade three level atoms confined between two dielectric walls are theoretically discussed. The line shapes exhibit a Dicke-narrowing type sub-Doppler structure as a result of the slowest atoms contribution and the velocity selection in pump-probe regime. It is also found that there is a strong reduction of the group velocity of light shown by the fast variation of the dispersion in the vicinity of resonance.Because of velocity selection, the line-widths are narrower and the reduction of the group velocity is more manifest in counter-propagation regime than they are in co-propagation regime. One also notes that there are two superimposed dispersion curves, the first of which corresponds to the optics pumping, and the other(the steeper) one to possible electromagnetically induced transparency.

Two-photon spectroscopy and Dicke narrowing of a thin atomic vapor film

Yuanyuan Li, Jintao Bai, Guizhong Zhang +4 more

One-photon Dick-narrowing absorption spectroscopy from a thin atomic vapor film can be extended to the two-photon case, in which the sub-Doppler absorption structures are obtained in a cascade three-level system. The periodic line shapes of two photon spectroscopy are similar to one-photon case. It is found that Dicke-narrowing is apparent when L/λ=(2n+1)/2 (n an integer, L the film thickness, and λ the wavelength of the probe field)in the case of one-photon process, and this feature is maintained in the case of two-photon process but not in the one-photon process when L/λ=2n/2. Due to the contribution of atom-wall collision in the cell and the pump-probe scheme, a very narrow structure can be obtained when the pump and the probe fields are in counter-propagation regime.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in a thin vapor film

David Petrosyan, Yu. P. Malakyan

We examine the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency in a thin cell filled with a vapor of three-level $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ atoms. We show that the absorption spectrum of the probe field and the fluorescence signal from the upper atomic level contain two sub-Doppler dips that have considerably different widths. The narrow dip corresponds to the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency, whereas the broader one results from the optical pumping of the external atomic states. Under the condition of exact resonance of the coupling field with the corresponding atomic transition, these two dips are superimposed on the frequency scale, while in the case of nonzero detuning of the coupling field, the two dips are shifted with respect to each other, which makes it possible to observe a competition between the two effects. In the frequency region where the absorption is low, large optical nonlinearities conditioned merely by the slow atoms having an effective 1 mK temperature are also found.

Study on the dispersion properties of type atoms in a confined system

Niu Jian-jun

To examine the dispersion properties of type atoms confined in between two dielectric walls. Near the Raman detuning, the fast variation of the dispersion lines corresponding to the very narrow dips of electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) demonstrates a strong reduction of the group velocity of the probe light in a confined system.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in a thin film

David Petrosyan, Yu. P. Malakyan

Summary form only given. We have developed a formalism for rendering the (near)resonant interaction of two electromagnetic fields with an inhomogeneously broadened system consisting of three-level /spl Lambda/-atoms confined in an ultrathin cell of thickness 10 /spl mu/m or less. The peculiar features of this model stem from the fact that the free interaction time of atoms with two laser fields is solely determined by the wall-to-wall time of atomic flight. Unusual absorptive and dispersive properties of this system have been found. Thus, we show that the absorption spectrum of the probe field and the fluorescence signal from the upper atomic level contain two sub-Doppler dips. One of them is originated from the optical pumping due to the leak of atomic population from the upper atomic level, white the other much narrower dip corresponds to the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect established in the medium due to the coherent population trapping of the atoms. When the coupling field is tuned into the exact resonance with the corresponding atomic transition, the locations of the two dips on the frequency scale coincide, whereas in the case of nonzero detuning of the coupling field, the two dips are shifted from each other by the amount of this detuning. This is because the EIT is very sensitive to the Raman resonance condition, while the OP is most efficient in the vicinity of the resonance of the probe field with the atomic transition frequency.

Absorptive reduction and width narrowing in λ-type atoms confined between two dielectric walls

Yuanyuan Li, Xun Hou, Jintao Bai +3 more

This paper investigates the absorptive reduction and the width narrowing of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a thin vapour film of λ-type atoms confined between two dielectric walls whose thickness is comparable with the wavelength of the probe field. The absorptive lines of the weak probe field exhibit strong reductions and very narrow EIT dips, which mainly results from the velocity slow-down effects and transient behaviour of atoms in a confined system. It is also shown that the lines are modified by the strength of the coupling field and the ratio of L/λ, with L the film thickness and λ the wavelength of the probe field. A simple robust recipe for EIT in a thin medium is achievable in experiment.

Sub-Doppler spectroscopy in a thin film of resonant vapor

S. Briaudeau, Daniel Bloch, M. Ducloy

We report on the spectroscopy in a resonant vapor film, in a regime in which the inhomogeneous transit time induces a velocity selection. For cell thickness (10--1000 \ensuremath{\mu}m) smaller than the transverse dimensions and for low enough atomic density, the atomic trajectories are essentially free flights from wall to wall. Hence, a single laser beam irradiation is sufficient to observe sub-Doppler resonances because of the transient atomic response, which enhances the response of the slowest atoms flying nearly parallel to the wall. The peculiar features of this velocity selection are presented in the linear regime as well as in the case of saturation induced by the optical pumping. Also, we report, in the case of the Cs ${D}_{2}$ line (852 nm), on the passage from a two-level linear-response regime to an optical pumping regime when increasing the incident intensity. We also describe the influence of several other parameters, including cell thickness and laser beam size and shape, on the experimental line shapes. An extension to Doppler-free polarization spectroscopy in a thin cell with a single beam, and to saturated absorption, is also reported.
