Electroluminescence of negatively charged single NV centers in diamond

The realization of electroluminescence (EL) of negatively charged nitrogen vacancy (NV−) centers is important toward all-electrical control of diamond quantum devices. In this study, we demonstrated electrical excitation and detection of EL of single NV− centers by using lateral diamond p+–i(n−)–n+ diodes. It had been grown by homoepitaxy using the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique. We introduced a lightly phosphorus doped i(n−) layer to stabilize the negative state of NV centers. It was estimated that the efficiency of the electrical excitation rate of the NV center was more than 30 times enhanced by introducing lateral diamond p+–i(n−)–n+ diodes structure compared with the previous vertical diode. Furthermore, the EL of a single NV− center embedded in the i(n−) layer region was characterized. The results show that the charge state of the single NV centers can be manipulated by the voltage applied to the p+–i(n−)–n+ diode, where the emission of EL is increasingly dominated by NV− in the range of 30 to 50 V.

Parallel optically detected magnetic resonance spectrometer for dozens of single nitrogen-vacancy centers using laser-spot lattice

Mingcheng Cai, Zhongzhi Guo, Fazhan Shi +5 more

We develop a parallel optically detected magnetic resonance (PODMR) spectrometer to address, manipulate, and read out an array of single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond in parallel. In this spectrometer, we use an array of micro-lenses to generate a 20 × 20 laser-spot lattice (LSL) on the objective focal plane and then align the LSL with an array of single NV centers. The quantum states of NV centers are manipulated by a uniform microwave field from a Ω-shape coplanar coil. As an experimental demonstration, we observe 80 NV centers in the field of view. Among them, magnetic resonance (MR) spectra and Rabi oscillations of 18 NV centers along the external magnetic field are measured in parallel. These results can be directly used to realize parallel quantum sensing and multiple times speedup compared with the confocal technique. Regarding the nanoscale MR technique, PODMR will be crucial for a high throughput single molecular MR spectrum and imaging.

A quantum computer based on NV centers in diamond: Optically detected nutations of single electron and nuclear spins

Alexander P. Nizovtsev, S. Ya. Kilin, Fedor Jelezko +4 more

In an effort to realize a two-bit processor for a quantum computer on the basis of single nitrogen-vacancy defect centers (NV centers) in diamond, the optically detected nutations of the electron spin of a single NV center in the ground state and of the nuclear spin of a 13 C atom located at a diamond lattice site nearest to the NV center are studied. The photodynamics of NV and NV + 13 C centers under different temperatures and optical excitation conditions is discussed. A seven-level model of a center excited by radiation from an Ar + laser at room temperature is proposed. On the basis of this model, the experimental spectra of optically detected electron paramagnetic and electron-nuclear double resonances of single NV and NV + 13 C centers in diamond nanocrystals, as well as experimental data on the optically detected nutations of the electron and nuclear spins of these centers caused by the actions of pulsed microwave and radiofrequency fields, respectively, are interpreted.
