Abstract

The nonadiabatic Berry phases in the magnetic resonance under various initial conditions are investigated and compared with the adiabatic Berry phase. The general formalism for calculating the nonadiabatic Berry phase of a two-state system in terms of the expansion of instantaneous energy eigenstates is presented. Some numerical calculations and discussions are made. The Berry phase of a two-statesystem under an impulsive interaction is addressed.

On geometric phases and dynamical invariants

Diana Monteoliva, H. J. Korsch, J A Nunez

A formalism is developed for calculating Berry phases for nonadiabatic time-periodic quantum systems when a dynamical invariant is known. It is found that, when the invariant is periodic and has a nondegenerate spectrum, this method allows a convenient way to obtain generalized Berry phases and the proper cyclic initial states. The method is applied to the generalized harmonic oscillator and the two-level system, where the invariant operators are explicitly constructed. Formulae for the conventional Berry's phases are readily obtained by taking the adiabatic limit of the exact results.

Nonadiabatic factor accompanying magnetic translation of a charged particle

J. Chee

The quantum adiabatic theorem incorporating the Berry phase phenomenon can be characterized as a factorization of the time evolution operator into a path-dependent geometric factor, a usual dynamical factor and a non-adiabatic factor that approaches the identity in the adiabatic limit. We study a case where all these three factors can be constructed explicitly and where the instantaneous Hamiltonian has infinitely degenerate energy eigenstates associated with magnetic translation symmetry. Significance of the non-adiabatic factor in terms of transition probabilities is discussed.

Adiabatic and nonadiabatic Berry phases for two-level atoms

D J Moore, G E Stedman

A formalism for calculating Berry phases for nonadiabatic systems containing an additional adiabatic time dependence is developed. This is then applied to a two-level atom in a strong resonant polarized laser, where the laser polarization provides the adiabatic parameter. It is found that, when the laser polarization is kept constant, judicious polarization choices allow one to eliminate either the rotating-wave or non-rotating-wave part of the interaction. Furthermore, the adiabatic Berry phasor obtained when the laser polarization is varied is found to be complex. This can be compared to the case of purely adiabatic time-reversal even systems, which can only have real Berry phasors.

WKB calculation of quantum adiabatic phases and nonadiabatic corrections

Carl M. Bender, N. Papanicolaou

Berry discovered that wave functions may acquire a geometrical phase factor, in addition to the usual dynamical phase, during an adiabatic cycle with period T. The dynamical and Berry phases are here recognized as the first two terms in a systematic WKB expansion in powers of ε = 1/ T. We thus provide a simple method for the calculation of adiabatic phases and for a consistent inclusion of nonadiabatic corrections.

High-order adiabatic approximations related to non-Abelian Berry's phase factors and nuclear quadrupole resonance

Chang-Pu Sun

A high-order adiabatic-approximation method is proposed to study the time evolution of degenerate quantum-mechanical systems with slowly changing Hamiltonians. We not only discuss the quantum adiabatic theorem, induced gauge structure, and non-Abelian Berry's phase factors in the first-order approximation, but we also give nonadiabatic corrections for problems in the second-order approximation. With the nuclear quadrupole resonance as an explicit example, we analyze the above-mentioned questions in detail and point out the observable effects of non-Abelian Berry's phase factors for nonadiabatic transitions between two instantaneous states in an improvement of Tycko's experiment.

Non-adiabatic Non-cyclic Generalization of the Berry Phase for a Spin-1/2 Particle in a Rotating Magnetic Field

Siamak Sadat Gousheh, Azadeh Mohammadi, Leila Shahkarami

In this paper we define a non-dynamical phase for a spin-1/2 particle in a rotating magnetic field in the non-adiabatic non-cyclic case, and this phase can be considered as a generalized Berry phase. We show that this phase reduces to the geometric Berry phase, in the adiabatic limit, up to a factor independent of the parameters of the system. We could add an arbitrary phase to the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian due to the gauge freedom. Then, we fix this arbitrary phase by comparing our Berry phase in the adiabatic limit with the Berry's result for the same system. Also, in the extreme non-adiabatic limit our Berry phase vanishes, modulo $2π$, as expected. Although, our Berry phase is in general complex, it becomes real in the expected cases: the adiabatic limit, the extreme non-adiabatic limit, and the points at which the state of the system returns to its initial form, up to a phase factor. Therefore, this phase can be considered as a generalization of the Berry phase. Moreover, we investigate the relation between the value of the generalized Berry phase, the period of the states and the period of the Hamiltonian.
