Abstract

In this paper, we propose an effective scheme to create a frequency entangled states based on bound-to-bound inter-subband transitions in an asymmetric three-coupled quantum well structure. A four-subband cascade configuration quantum well structure is illuminated with a pulsed probe field and two continuous wave control laser fields to generate a mixing field. By properly adjusting the frequency detunings and the intensity of coupling fields, the conversion efficiency can reach 100%. A maximum entangled state can be achieved by selecting a proper length of the sample. We also numerically investigate the propagation dynamics of the probe pulse and mixing pulse, the results show that two frequency components are able to exchange energy through a four-wave mixing process. Moreover, by considering special coupling fields, the storage and retrieval of the probe pulse is also numerically simulated.

Maximizing Four-Wave Mixing in Four-Subband Semiconductor Quantum Wells with Optimal-Shortcut Spatially Varying Control Fields

Dionisis Stefanatos, Emmanuel Paspalakis

In the present article, we derive optimal spatially varying control fields, which maximize the four-wave mixing efficiency in a four-subband semiconductor asymmetric double quantum well, following analogous works in atomic systems. The control fields coherently prepare the medium, where a weak probe pulse is propagated and eventually converted to a signal pulse at the output. The optimal fields, which maximize the conversion efficiency for a given propagation length, are obtained by applying optimal control theory to a simplified form of propagation equations but are tested with numerical simulations using the full set of Maxwell–Schrödinger equations, which accurately describe the propagation of light pulses in the medium. For short propagation distances, the proposed optimal scheme outperforms a simpler spatially changing control protocol that we recently studied, while for larger distances, the efficiency of both protocols approaches unity. The present work is expected to find application in frequency conversion between light beams, conversion between light beams carrying orbital angular momentum, and nonlinear optical amplification.

Generation of frequency entangled states via four-wave mixing in semiconductor well waveguide

Ji-Bing Liu, Anshou Zheng, Na Liu +2 more

We propose and analyze a scheme to realize a maximally frequency entangled state via four-wave mixing in semiconductor well waveguide. This scheme uses light hole transition to induce nonradiative quantum coherence in the waveguide. The results show that the transformation efficiency is perfect and the velocity of the entangled state is slow. By adjusting the intensity of strong controlling fields, the storing and retrieving process of the maximum entangled state can be achieved in our scheme.

Suppression of absorption by quantum interference in intersubband transitions of tunnel-coupled double quantum wells

Wen-Xing Yang, Xu, Jin, Ray‐Kuang Lee

We propose and analyze an efficient scheme for suppressing the absorption of a weak probe field based on intersubband transitions in a four-level asymmetric coupled-quantum well (CQW) driven coherently by a probe laser field and a control laser field. By using the numerical simulation, we find that the magnitude of the transient absorption of the probe field is smaller than the three-level system based on the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) at line center of the probe transition, moreover, comparing with the scheme in three-level asymmetric double QW system, the transparency hole of the present work is much broader. By analyzing the steady-state process analytically and numerically, our results show that the probe absorption can be completely eliminated under the condition of Raman resonance (i.e. two-photon detuning is zero). Besides, we can observe one transparency window without requiring one- or two-photon detuning exactly vanish. This investigation may provide the possible scheme for EIT in solids by using CQW.

Pulsed Four-Wave Mixing in Intersubband Transitions of a Semiconductor Quantum Well: Effects of Pulse Shape

Sofia Evangelou, Emmanuel Paspalakis, Nikolaos A. Vainos +4 more

We study theoretically the phenomenon of pulsed four‐wave mixing in intersubband transitions of a symmetric semiconductor quantum well structure. In the theoretical model we consider two quantum well subbands that are coupled by a strong pulsed pump electromagnetic field and a weak pulsed probe electromagnetic field. For the description of the system dynamics we use the density matrix equations obtained from the effective nonlinear Bloch equations. We calculate the time‐integrated four‐wave mixing spectrum for various pulse shapes and electron sheet densities and study the effects of pulse shape on four‐wave mixing.

Quantum Entanglement of Fock States with Perfectly Efficient Ultraslow Single-Probe Photon Four-Wave Mixing

M. G. Payne, L. Deng

We propose a method to achieve quantum entanglement of two Fock states with perfectly efficient, ultraslow propagation enhanced four-wave mixing. A cold atomic medium is illuminated with a two-mode cw control laser to produce coherent mixtures of excited states. An ultraslowly propagating, single-photon quantum probe field completes the four-wave mixing with 100% photon flux conversion efficiency, creating a depth dependent entanglement of two Fock states. We show that at a suitable propagation distance, a maximum entangled state is created with a single-photon wave-packet state that has 50% probability of being in each of two product-type Fock states.

Preparation of multiparty entangled states using pairwise perfectly efficient single-probe photon four-wave mixing

Ying Wu, M. G. Payne, E. W. Hagley +1 more

We propose a scheme to achieve multiparty entanglement with perfectly efficient, ultraslow, multichannel pairwise four-wave mixing (FWM). A cold atomic medium is illuminated with an $N$-mode continuous-wave (cw) control laser to produce coherent mixtures of excited states. An ultraslowly propagating, single-photon quantum probe field completes multichannel, pairwise FWM, creating a depth dependent entanglement of $N$ Fock states. We show explicitly that this scheme can be utilized to realize an $N$-party entangled state of ultraslowly propagating quantized fields. In particular, we give the explicit analytical expression of a three-party W-state propagating at an ultraslow group velocity, and the numerical results of a multiparty W state of $2M+1$ Fock states.
