Giant enhanced four-wave mixing efficiency via two-photon resonance in asymmetric quantum wells

Abstract

We propose an efficient four-wave mixing (FWM) scheme in asymmetric semiconductor quantum wells (SQWs) via two-photon resonance. By using the coupled Schrödinger–Maxwell formalism, we derive explicitly the corresponding analytical expressions of the inter-probe pulse and generated FWM field in the linear regime under the steady-state condition. With the aid of cross coupling between one ground state and two closely adjacent excited states, the efficiency of the generated FWM field is found to be significantly enhanced, up to 60%. More interestingly, a wide region of the maximum FWM efficiency is demonstrated as the ratio of transition dipole moments is within the values ranging from 1.1 to 1.3, which can be maintained for a certain propagation distance (i.e. 100 μ m).

Enhanced four-wave mixing efficiency in four-subband semiconductor quantum wells via Fano-type interference

Shaopeng Liu, Wen‐Xing Yang, You-Lin Chuang +4 more

We propose and analyze an efficient way to enhance four-wave mixing (FWM) signals in a four-subband semiconductor quantum well via Fano-type interference. By using Schrödinger-Maxwell formalism, we derive explicitly analytical expressions for the input probe pulse and the generated FWM field in linear regime under the steady-state condition. With the aid of interference between two excited subbands tunneling to the common continuum, the efficiency to generate FWM field is found to be significantly enhanced, up to 35%. More interestingly, a linear growth rate in the FWM efficiency is demonstrated as the strength of Fano-type interference increases in presence of the continuum states, which can be maintained for a certain propagation distance (i.e., 50μm).

Tunneling-induced highly efficient four-wave mixing in asymmetric double quantum wells

Dong Sun, Hongjun Zhang, Hui Sun +2 more

Abstract The time-dependent analysis of four-wave mixing based on resonant tunneling is investigated in an asymmetric semiconductor double quantum well structure. We analytically demonstrate that a highly efficient mixing wave is found to be induced by resonant tunneling in such a quantum well scheme with low-light pump wave intensities. Especially for small propagation distances, a significant enhancement of four-wave mixing conversion efficiency can be achieved. Such an interesting scheme could be used to generate coherent short-wavelength radiation in solid-state materials.

Efficient three‐wave mixing via intersubband transitions in a semiconductor quantum well

Jiahua Li

Abstract We put forward an efficient three‐wave mixing (TWM) scheme in an asymmetric semiconductor quantum well (SQW) based on intersubband transitions. Using the coupled Schrödinger–Maxwell approach, we derive the corresponding explicit analytical expressions for the input probe and generated TWM signal fields. Such a nonlinear optical process may be used for efficiently generating coherent short‐wavelength radiation in the SQW solid‐state system, which is much more practical than that in atomic system because of its flexible design and the controllable interference strength. High Efficiency Four-Wave Mixing with Relaxation Coupling of Longitude-Optical Phonons in Semiconductor Quantum Wells*

Yanchao She, Xue-Jun 学军 Zheng 郑, Denglong Wang +1 more

Abstract The time-dependent analysis of four-wave mixing (FWM) has been performed in four-level double semiconductor quantum wells (SQWs) considering the cross-coupling of the longitude-optical phonons (LOP) relaxation. It is shown that both the amplitude and the conversion efficiency of the FWM field enhance greatly with the increasing strength of cross-coupling of LOP relaxation. Interestingly, a double peak value of the conversion efficiency is obtained under a relatively weak single-photon detuning considering the LOP coupling. When the detuning becomes stronger, the double peaks turn into one peak appearing at the line respect to the about equality two control fields. The results can be interpreted by the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency and the indirect transition. Such controlled high efficiency FWM based on the cross-coupling LOP may have potential applications in quantum control and communications.

Highly efficient vortex four-wave mixing in asymmetric semiconductor quantum wells

Jing Qiu, Zhiping Wang, Dong-Sheng Ding +2 more

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) is an important property of vortex light, which provides a valuable tool to manipulate the light-matter interaction in the study of classical and quantum optics. Here we propose a scheme to generate vortex light fields via four-wave mixing (FWM) in asymmetric semiconductor quantum wells. By tailoring the probe-field and control-field detunings, we can effectively manipulate the helical phase and intensity of the FWM field. Particularly, when probe field and control field have identical detuning, we find that both the absorption and phase twist of the generated FWM field are significantly suppressed. Consequently, the highly efficient vortex FWM is realized, where the maximum conversion efficiency reaches around 50%. Our study provides a tool to transfer vortex wavefronts from input to output fields in an efficient way, which may find potential applications in solid-state quantum optics and quantum information processing.

Maximizing Four-Wave Mixing in Four-Subband Semiconductor Quantum Wells with Optimal-Shortcut Spatially Varying Control Fields

Dionisis Stefanatos, Emmanuel Paspalakis

In the present article, we derive optimal spatially varying control fields, which maximize the four-wave mixing efficiency in a four-subband semiconductor asymmetric double quantum well, following analogous works in atomic systems. The control fields coherently prepare the medium, where a weak probe pulse is propagated and eventually converted to a signal pulse at the output. The optimal fields, which maximize the conversion efficiency for a given propagation length, are obtained by applying optimal control theory to a simplified form of propagation equations but are tested with numerical simulations using the full set of Maxwell–Schrödinger equations, which accurately describe the propagation of light pulses in the medium. For short propagation distances, the proposed optimal scheme outperforms a simpler spatially changing control protocol that we recently studied, while for larger distances, the efficiency of both protocols approaches unity. The present work is expected to find application in frequency conversion between light beams, conversion between light beams carrying orbital angular momentum, and nonlinear optical amplification.
