Abstract

Abstract We put forward an efficient three‐wave mixing (TWM) scheme in an asymmetric semiconductor quantum well (SQW) based on intersubband transitions. Using the coupled Schrödinger–Maxwell approach, we derive the corresponding explicit analytical expressions for the input probe and generated TWM signal fields. Such a nonlinear optical process may be used for efficiently generating coherent short‐wavelength radiation in the SQW solid‐state system, which is much more practical than that in atomic system because of its flexible design and the controllable interference strength. Highly efficient four-wave mixing via intersubband transitions in InGaAs/AlAs coupled double quantum well structures

Wen‐Xing Yang, Jing-Min Hou, Ray‐Kuang Lee

We perform a time-dependent analysis of continuous wave (cw) four-wave mixing (FWM) in InGaAs/AlAs coupled double quantum well (CDQW) structures via intersubband transitions. By using the coupled Schrödinger–Maxwell approach, we obtain the corresponding explicit analytical expressions for the input probe and FWM-generated signal fields. We calculated the dependencies of the efficiency of the FWM-generated fields on cw pump fields and the depths of penetration into the CDQW sample. Such a nonlinear optical process may be used to generate coherent short-wavelength radiation efficiently in the CDQW solid state system.

Giant enhanced four-wave mixing efficiency via two-photon resonance in asymmetric quantum wells

Shaopeng Liu, Wen‐Xing Yang, Zhonghu Zhu +1 more

We propose an efficient four-wave mixing (FWM) scheme in asymmetric semiconductor quantum wells (SQWs) via two-photon resonance. By using the coupled Schrödinger–Maxwell formalism, we derive explicitly the corresponding analytical expressions of the inter-probe pulse and generated FWM field in the linear regime under the steady-state condition. With the aid of cross coupling between one ground state and two closely adjacent excited states, the efficiency of the generated FWM field is found to be significantly enhanced, up to 60%. More interestingly, a wide region of the maximum FWM efficiency is demonstrated as the ratio of transition dipole moments is within the values ranging from 1.1 to 1.3, which can be maintained for a certain propagation distance (i.e. 100 μ m).

Slow optical solitons via intersubband transitions in a semiconductor quantum well

Wen-Xing Yang, Ray-Kuang Lee

We show the formation of bright and dark slow optical solitons based on intersubband transitions in a semiconductor quantum well (SQW). Using the coupled Schrödinger-Maxwell approach, we provide both analytical and numerical results. Such a nonlinear optical process may be used for the control technology of optical delay lines and optical buffers in the SQW solid-state system. With appropriate parameters, we also show the generation of a large cross-phase modulation (XPM). Since the intersubband energy level can be easily tuned by an external bias voltage, the present investigation may open possibilities for electrically controlled phase modulators in solid systems.

Coherent control of an asymmetric semiconductor quantum well structure

J. F. Dynes, Emmanuel Paspalakis

Abstract We study coherent control of an asymmetric semiconductor quantum well by simultaneous application of a laser field and its second harmonic. The relative phase of the applied laser fields is externally altered. The electron population and the small signal absorption and dispersion spectra of a weak probe field propagating through such a quantum well structure are computed and are found to be strongly phase dependent. TWO-COLOR COHERENT CONTROL OF OPTICAL BISTABILITY IN ASYMMETRIC SEMICONDUCTOR QUANTUM WELLS

Jiahua Li, Xiangying Hao

We investigate optical bistability in intersubband transitions of an asymmetric semiconductor quantum well structure that has equidistant transitions between three subbands of the system and is placed in a unidirectional cavity. The system is simultaneously coupled by a fundamental field and its second harmonic. The second harmonic field acts as a control field and significantly influences the optical bistability. In addition, the two-color coherent control of optical bistability by the relative phase of the fundamental and the second harmonic fields is shown. The influence of the electronic cooperation parameter on the OB behavior is also discussed. This investigation may be used for optimizing and controlling the optical switching process in the SQW solid-state system, which is much more practical than that in the atomic system because of its flexible design and the controllable interference strength.

Ultraslow Optical Solitons in a Coupled Double Quantum-Well Nanostructure

Xiangying Hao, Ji-Bing Liu, Xin‐You Lü +2 more

We demonstrate the formation of ultraslow dark optical solitons with a four-level scheme in an asymmetric semiconductor double quantum well (SDQW) structure based on intersubband transitions by using only a low-intensity pulsed laser radiation. With appropriate conditions we show numerically that the dark optical soliton can travel with a ultraslow group velocity V g /c ∼ – 10 −3 . Such a semiconductor system is much more practical than its atomic counterpart because of its flexible design and the controllable interference strength. This nonlinear optical process in the SDQW solid-state material may be used for the control technology of optical delay lines and optical buffers.
