Abstract

We study the appearance of an Abelian geometric phase in relativistic and nonrelativistic quantum dynamics of a neutral particle due to the presence of an edge dislocation. We demonstrate that the nonminimal coupling of fermions with torsion introduces a geometric phase in the wave function of the neutral particle in relativistic and in nonrelativistic quantum dynamics.

Geometric phase for a neutral particle in the presence of a topological defect

K. Bakke, Jose Roberto Nascimento, Claudio Furtado

In this paper we study the quantum dynamics of a neutral particle in the presence of a topological defect. We investigate the appearance of a geometric phase in the relativistic quantum dynamics of a neutral particle which possesses permanent magnetic and electric dipole moments in the presence of an electromagnetic field in this curved space-time. The nonrelativistic quantum dynamics are investigated using the Foldy-Wouthuysen expansion. The gravitational Aharonov-Casher and He-McKellar-Wilkens effects are investigated for a series of electric and magnetic field configurations.

Geometric quantum phase in the spacetime of topological defects

K. Bakke, Claudio Furtado, Jose Roberto Nascimento

In this contribution, we study the quantum dynamics of a neutral particle in the presence of a topological defect. We investigate the appearance of a geometric phase in the relativistic quantum dynamics of a neutral particle which possesses permanent magnetic and electric dipole moments in the presence of an electromagnetic field in this curved background. We also study the influence of noninertial effects of a rotating frame and and obtain several contributions to the relativistic geometric phase due to the noninertial effects and the topology of spacetime. The analogous Aharonov-Casher and He-Mckellar-Wilkens effects are investigated in the nonrelativistic dynamics with the presence of a topological defect and under the influence of noninertial effects. We also obtain effects analogous to the Sagnac effect and Mashhoon effect due to the presence of the topological defect.

Noncommutative Anandan quantum phase

Eduardo Passos, L. R. Ribeiro, Claudio Furtado +1 more

In this work, we study the noncommutative nonrelativistic quantum dynamics of a neutral particle, which possesses permanent magnetic and electric dipole moments, in the presence of external electric and magnetic fields. We use the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation of the Dirac spinor with a nonminimal coupling to obtain the nonrelativistic limit. In this limit, we study the noncommutative quantum dynamics and obtain the noncommutative Anandan geometric phase. We analyze the situation where the magnetic dipole moment of the particle is zero, and we obtain the noncommutative version of the He-McKellar-Wilkens effect. We demonstrate that this phase in the noncommutative case is a geometric dispersive phase. We also investigate this geometric phase by considering the noncommutativity in the phase space, and the Anandan phase is obtained.

From a non-Abelian geometric phase to quantum holonomies for a neutral particle with permanent electric dipole moment

K. Bakke

Abstract By dealing with an elastic medium with a disclination, we search for the influence of the disclination topology on a geometric quantum phase yielded by the interaction of a nonuniform magnetic field with the permanent electric dipole moment of a neutral particle. This magnetic field is produced by a nonuniform electric current density. Further, we explore the non-Abelian nature of the geometric quantum phase in search of quantum holonomies for this neutral particle system and discuss a possible application to the geometric quantum computation.

Wave Packet Dynamics in Synthetic Non-Abelian Gauge Fields

Mehedi Hasan, Chetan Sriram Madasu, Ketan D. Rathod +4 more

It is generally admitted that in quantum mechanics, the electromagnetic potentials have physical interpretations otherwise absent in classical physics as illustrated by the Aharonov-Bohm effect. In 1984, Berry interpreted this effect as a geometrical phase factor. The same year, Wilczek and Zee generalized the concept of Berry phases to degenerate levels and showed that a non-Abelian gauge field arises in these systems. In sharp contrast with the Abelian case, spatially uniform non-Abelian gauge fields can induce particle noninertial motion. We explore this intriguing phenomenon with a degenerated Fermionic atomic gas subject to a two-dimensional synthetic SU(2) non-Abelian gauge field. We reveal the spin Hall nature of the noninertial dynamic as well as its anisotropy in amplitude and frequency due to the spin texture of the system. We finally draw the similarities and differences of the observed wave packet dynamic and the celebrated Zitterbewegung effect of the relativistic Dirac equation.

Non-Abelian Berry phase for open quantum systems: Topological protection versus geometric dephasing

Kyrylo Snizhko, Reinhold Egger, Yuval Gefen

To what extent can coupling to a dissipative environment hinder the emergence of a geometric phase? And does dissipation undermine its possibly non-Abelian nature? Here, the authors show that non-Abelian geometric phase survives the presence of an environment, albeit modified. The dissipative coupling is manifest in the non-Abelian dynamics. Moreover, it gives rise to non-Abelian geometric dephasing, which may suppress or enhance coherent contributions, depending on the order of adiabatic operations.
