Lifetime of the main fluorescence level, 4S3 '2 , of erbium pentaphosphate monocrystal was measured to be 380f20 ns.Direct excitation to higher energy levels, and also indirect excitation with the use of an infrared beam were applied.
We present a direct lifetime measurement of the 5s5p1P1 state of strontium using time-correlated single-photon counting of laser-induced fluorescence in a hot atomic beam. To achieve fast switch-off times and a high signal-to-noise ratio, we excite the strontium atoms with a femtosecond pulsed laser at approximately 461 nm and collect the fluorescence onto a hybrid single-photon detector. Analysis of the measured exponential decay gives a lifetime of the 1P1 state of $\ensuremath{\tau}=(5.216\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.{006}_{\text{stat}}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.{013}_{\text{sys}})$ ns, where all the systematic effects have been thoroughly considered.
The lifetimes of the 7 2P1/2o and 7 2P3/2o states of thallium have been measured for the first time by observing the fluorescence decay following two-photon resonant excitation in an atomic beam. The values obtained for these states are 61.9 and 48.4 ns, respectively, with an uncertainty of 2%. These results are in good quantitative agreement with the calculations of Bardsley and Norcross, which include the effect of core polarizability.
