Abstract

The numerical spin states of the spinor polariton condensates are calculated with a polarization-tunable pumping beam. The findings suggest the generation and nondestructive manipulation of polaritonic skyrmion and half-vortex rings in experimentally feasible configurations.

Controllable half-vortex lattices in an incoherently pumped polariton condensate

Jonathan Keeling, Natalia G. Berloff

We show how the transition between synchronized and desynchronized states of a spinor polariton condensate can be used to drive a transition between stationary vortex lattices and half-vortex lattices. This provides a way to control polariton spin textures by a combination of pump spot profile and applied magnetic fields. To do this, we extend the model of non-equilibrium spinor condensates to include relaxation, and study how this affects the desynchronization transition. We discuss how the pattern formation can be explained by behavior of the homogeneous system.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking in persistent currents of spinor polaritons

Evgeny S. Sedov, Sergei M Arakelyan, Alexey Vitalievich Kavokin

We predict the spontaneous symmetry breaking in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate of exciton-polaritons (polaritons) caused by the coupling of its spin and orbital degrees of freedom. We study a polariton condensate trapped in a ring-shaped effective potential with a broken rotational symmetry. We propose a realistic scheme of generating controllable spinor azimuthal persistent currents of polaritons in the trap under the continuous wave optical pump. We propose a new type of half-quantum circulating states in a spinor system characterized by azimuthal currents in both circular polarizations and a vortex in only one of the polarizations. The spontaneous symmetry breaking in the spinor polariton condensate that consists in the switching from co-winding to opposite-winding currents in opposite spin states is revealed. It is characterized by the change of the average orbital angular momentum of the condensate from zero to non-zero values. The radial displacement of the pump spot and the polarization of the pump act as the control parameters. The considered system exhibits a fundamental similarity to a superconducting flux qubit, which makes it highly promising for applications in quantum computing.

Spinor polariton condensates under nonresonant pumping: Steady states and elementary excitations

Xingran Xu, Ying Hu, Zhang Zhi-dong +1 more

We theoretically investigate a spinor polariton condensate under nonresonant pumping, based on driven-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equations coupled to the rate equation of a spin-unpolarized reservoir. We find the homogeneous polariton condensate can transit from the spin-unpolarized phase, where it is linearly polarized, to the spin-polarized phase, where it is elliptically polarized, depending on the cross-spin versus same-spin interactions and the linear polarization splitting. In both phases, we study elementary excitations using Bogoliubov approach, in a regime where the decay rate of total exciton density in reservoir crosses over from the slow to the fast limit. Depending on reservoir parameters, the global-phase mode can be either diffusive or gapped. By contrast, the relative-phase mode always possesses a gapped energy, undamped in the spin-unpolarized phase but weakly damped in the spin-polarized phase. In the spin-unpolarized phase, both modes are linearly polarized despite pumping and decay. However, in the spin-polarized phase, the mode polarization can be significantly affected by the reservoir and depends strongly on the circular polarization degree of the condensate. Interestingly, we demonstrate that the ``ghost'' branch of the Bogoliubov spectrum of the relative-phase mode can be visualized in the photoluminescence emission, distinguishable from that of the global-phase mode and thus allowing for experimental observation, when the spinor polariton condensate is elliptically polarized.

Oblique half-solitons and their generation in exciton-polariton condensates

Hugo Flayac, Dmitry D. Solnyshkov, G. Malpuech

We describe oblique half-solitons, a new type of topological defects in a two-dimensional spinor Bose-Einstein condensate. A realistic protocol based on the optical spin Hall effect is proposed toward their generation within an exciton-polariton system.

Entanglement generation and detection in split exciton-polariton condensates

Jingyan Feng, Hui Li, Zheng Sun +1 more

We propose a method of generating and detecting spatially defined entanglement in exciton-polariton condensates at steady state. In our scheme we first create a spinor polariton condensate, such that steady-state squeezing is obtained under a one-axis twisting interaction. Then the condensate is split either physically or virtually, which results in entanglement generated between the two parts. A virtual split means that the condensate is not physically split, but its near-field image is divided into two parts, and the spin correlations are deduced from polarization measurements in each half. We theoretically model and examine the logarithmic negativity criterion and several correlation-based criteria to show that entanglement exists under experimentally achievable parameters.

Optical Bistability under Nonresonant Excitation in Spinor Polariton Condensates

L. Pickup, Kirill P. Kalinin, Alexis Askitopoulos +4 more

We realize bistability in the spinor of polariton condensates under nonresonant optical excitation and in the absence of biasing external fields. Numerical modeling of the system using the Ginzburg-Landau equation with an internal Josephson coupling between the two spin components of the condensate qualitatively describes the experimental observations. We demonstrate that polariton spin bistability strongly depends on the condensate's overlap with the exciton reservoir by tuning the excitation geometry and sample temperature. We obtain noncollapsing bistability hysteresis loops for a record range of sweep times, [10 μs, 1 s], offering a promising route to spin switches and spin memory elements.
