Abstract

We report the first demonstration of spin squeezing of a large-spin system via quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement. We observe 2 dB of metrological squeezing in an ensemble of ~ 106 laser cooled 87Rb atoms in the F = 1 hyperfine ground state.

Spin-squeezing of a large-spin system via QND measurement

R. J. Sewell, Marco Koschorreck, M. Napolitano +3 more

We demonstrate spin squeezing and entanglement in a large-spin system via quantum non-demolition measurement. We make non-destructive, projection-noise-limited collective spin measurements on an ensemble of up to in 8.4 × 105 laser-cooled 87Rb atoms in the f = 1 hyperfine ground state. A dynamically-decoupled probing scheme [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 093602 (2010)] prevents probe-induced decoherence. Repeated measurements show correlations beyond the standard quantum limit, indicating generation of a spin-squeezed state with up to −3.6 dB of noise reduction and −2.6 dB of metrologically-relevant squeezing.

Spin Squeezing via Quantum Non-Demolition Measurements in Cold 87Rb Atomic Ensemble

We demonstrate spin squeezing of a magnetically sensitive coherent spin-state in an ensemble of ∼ 6.5 × 105 cold 87Rb atoms. Quantum non-demolition measurements achieved a spin-noise reduction by 2.9 ( − 1.0 + 1.3 ) dB compared to the initial projection noise level.

Realization of quantum non-demolition measurement of nuclear spin 1∕2 of cold ytterbium atom

T. Takano, Ryo Namiki, Yoshiro Takahashi +1 more

We have demonstrated a quantum non‐demolition (QND) measurement with a collective spin of cold ytterbium atoms (171Yb) via Faraday rotation interaction, and have observed 1.8−1.5+2.4 dB spin squeezing. Since 171Yb atoms have only a nuclear spin of one‐half in the ground state, the system constitutes the simplest spin ensemble and is thus robust against decoherence. Furthermore, we have considered the atomic quantum swapping gate as a quantum information device using multiple Faraday rotation interactions, and have found that we can realize the quantum‐domain performance for a realistic experimental condition.

Conditions for a QND measurement of spin in cold /sup 87/Rb

S.R. de Echaniz, Marcin Kubasik, Herbert Crepaz +2 more

A scheme to generate spin squeezing via a quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement in a cold sample of /sup 87/Rb atoms is proposed using the /sup 5/S/sub 1/2/ (F = 1) hyperfine ground state. In this system it is expected to have a much higher signal to noise ratio. Suitable Zeeman substates and operators to perform the QND interaction in this scheme are identified, together with the possible sources of error and noise arising from these choices.

Generation of macroscopic singlet states in atomic ensembles

Géza Tóth, Morgan W Mitchell

We study squeezing of the spin uncertainties by quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement in non-polarized spin ensembles. Unlike the case of polarized ensembles, the QND measurements can be performed with negligible back-action, which allows, in principle, perfect spin squeezing as quantified by Tóth et al (2007 Phys. Rev. Lett. 99 250405). The generated spin states approach many-body singlet states and contain a macroscopic number of entangled particles even when individual spin is large. We introduce the Gaussian treatment of unpolarized spin states and use it to estimate the achievable spin squeezing for realistic experimental parameters. Our proposal might have applications for magnetometry with a high spatial resolution or quantum memories storing information in decoherence free subspaces.
