Abstract

An analytic theory of the adiabatic passage (AP) regime of interaction of short frequency chirped laser pulses with a two-level quantum system (QS) being initially in the superpositional quantum state is presented. We show that the initial value of the non-diagonal elements of the density matrix can influence the dynamics of the population transfer during the action of the laser pulse, but do not influence essentially the final populations of the states of the QS obtained at the end of the interaction near the AP regime. A novel solution to the Bloch equations is obtained in the form of a converging power series generalizing the ordinary AP solution.

Coherent population transfer in three-level Λ systems by chirped laser pulses: Minimization of the intermediate-level population

Ignacio R. Solá, Vladimir S. Malinovsky, Bo Y. Chang +2 more

Adiabatic passage induced by chirped laser pulses in three-level $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ systems is investigated. Two different strategies for efficient population transfer (equal and opposite sign of the chirp) are analyzed. The role of detuning, crucial for the attempt to reduce the population of the intermediate state, is demonstrated. The scheme of adiabatic passage by laser pulses with chirps of different sign is not symmetric with respect to the sign of the one-photon detuning. Blue detuning results in a smaller transient population of the intermediate state than does red detuning. The results are explained on the basis of dressed states. Numerical results for a fully off-resonant adiabatic passage scheme, based on two pulses with the same sign of the chirps, are also considered. The robustness of the schemes in terms of the Rabi frequency, chirp rate, detuning, and time delay of the pulses is explored.

Three-level Λ atom in the field of frequency-chirped bichromatic laser pulses: Writing and storage of optical phase information

Gagik P. Djotyan, Jozsef S. Bakos, Zs. Sörlei

We investigate the behavior of a three-level atomic system with \ensuremath{\Lambda} structure of levels in the field of a sequence of short frequency-chirped bichromatic laser pulses (BLP's) in the adiabatic passage regime of interaction. We show that the efficiency of the population transfer in this atomic system is sensitive to the relative phase of the pulses forming the BLP when the atom is prepared in a coherent superposition of its two ground states initially. We propose to use this sensitivity for coherent fast and robust writing and reading of optical phase information. The initial preparation of the atom in the ``dark'' superposition state is suggested through the action of a sequence of a few frequency-chirped BLP's with duration longer than the atomic relaxation time.

Theory of two-photon adiabatic passage: Absorption to and emission fromNstates

Moshe Shapiro

An analytic theory of resonantly enhanced two-photon excitation of N states with laser light of an arbitrary field is developed. Closed-form expressions for the time evolution of the system are derived. The formulation is used to explore adiabatic passage to a level embedded amongst N other levels. ``Counterintuitive'' pulse sequence is shown to lead to complete population transfer under adiabatic conditions. The reverse case of stimulated emission from N initial states is also studied. Complete population transfer to the ground state from an initial state satisfying the two-photon resonance condition is shown to be possible. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Chirped adiabatic passage with temporally delayed pulses

Y. B. Band, O. Magnes

We study the dynamics of chirped adiabatic passage (CHIRAP) with temporally delayed pulses to selectively and fully transfer population in atoms and molecules. We show that the transfer of population via stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) and stimulated two-photon adiabatic absorption with temporally delayed laser pulses is not adversely affected by applying a chirp to the pulses, provided the intensity of the laser is sufficiently large to allow adiabatic passage. We then proceed to consider systems in which a near degeneracy of terminal state levels results in nonselective population of the terminal levels using nonchirped STIRAP or two-photon absorption stimulated passage, because the dynamics within the nearly degenerate pair of levels is not adiabatic. However, the CHIRAP process selectively populates only one of the terminal levels.

Adiabatic passage in three levels closed-loop systems with chirped lasers pulses

Abstract This study demonstrates complete adiabatic population transfer in a closed three-level atomic system using chirped laser pulses. By satisfying the three-photon resonance condition, we effectively mitigate the first-order Doppler effect. Under the assumption of weak coupling between the stable levels, we show that relative phase fluctuations of the lasers exert a negligible influence on the population dynamics during the transfer process. A comprehensive analysis of the system parameters is conducted to determine the optimal conditions for achieving 100% population transfer while minimizing the excited state population

Population Transfer between Two Quantum States by Piecewise Chirping of Femtosecond Pulses: Theory and Experiment

Sergey Zhdanovich, E. A. Shapiro, M. Shapiro +2 more

We propose and experimentally demonstrate the method of population transfer by piecewise adiabatic passage between two quantum states. Coherent excitation of a two-level system with a train of ultrashort laser pulses is shown to reproduce the effect of an adiabatic passage, conventionally achieved with a single frequency-chirped pulse. By properly adjusting the amplitudes and phases of the pulses in the excitation pulse train, we achieve complete and robust population transfer to the target state. The piecewise nature of the process suggests a possibility for the selective population transfer in complex quantum systems.
