Abstract

The polarization state of pairs of photons resulting from the biexciton decay cascade becomes entangled when spectral filtering is applied. The phase in the density matrix is shown to result from the spectral filtering process.

Abstract Entangled photon pairs are emitted from a biexciton decay cascade of single quantum dots when spectral filtering is applied. We show this by experimentally measuring the density matrix of the polarization state of the photon pair emitted from a continuously pumped quantum dot. The matrix clearly satisfies the Peres criterion for entanglement. By applying in addition a temporal window, the quantum dot becomes an entangled light source. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Entangled Photon Pairs from Semiconductor Quantum Dots

Tomographic analysis demonstrates that the polarization state of pairs of photons emitted from a biexciton decay cascade becomes entangled when spectral filtering is applied. The measured density matrix of the photon pair satisfies the Peres criterion for entanglement by more than 3 standard deviations of the experimental uncertainty and violates Bell's inequality. We show that the spectral filtering erases the "which path" information contained in the photons' color and that the remanent information in the quantum dot degrees of freedom is negligible.

Shortcoming of spectral filtering in semiconductor-based entangled photon sources

We theoretically investigate the production of polarization-entangled photons through the biexciton cascade decay in a single semiconductor quantum dot. To accomplish a high degree of entanglement, despite the exciton finestructure splitting, one must either energetically align the two exciton states by means of external fields or erase the which-path information by post-selecting photons within the correct frequency range. Here we show that in the latter scheme, as well as in related proposals, the photon state becomes deteriorated through dephasing processes in the solid, and the degree of entanglement remains low despite filtering.

We use polarization tomography to demonstrate for the first time entanglement between photon pairs from the biexciton radiative cascade. The entangled pair violates Bellpsilas inequality and satisfies Peres criterion by more than 3 standards deviations of the experimental uncertainty.

ANALYSIS OF CORRELATION FUNCTION AND POLARIZATION ENTANGLEMENT OF PHOTON PAIRS GENERATED FROM ANISOTROPIC SEMICONDUCTOR QUANTUM DOT

The dynamics of the population density matrix and polarization density matrix of the biexciton system of single semiconductor quantum dots with pulse excitation were analyzed by using master equations and quantum regression theorem. A model based on the spectral distributions of the cascade photon emissions was proposed to calculate the polarization entanglement of the photon pairs emitted from the non-degenerate biexciton system with spectral filters. The influences of the spectral filter width and the exciton energy splitting between the two orthogonally polarized eigenstates on the entanglement were theoretically analyzed. The dependence of the polarization entanglement on the input pulse area was also discussed.
