Abstract

We study the effect of losses on the phase sensitivity of the SU(1,1) interferometer for different configurations. We find that this type of interferometer is robust against losses that result from an inefficient detection system. This type of loss only introduces an overall prefactor to the sensitivity but does not change the $1/n$ scaling, where $n$ is the average number of particles inside the interferometer, characteristic of the Heisenberg limit. In addition, we show that under some conditions the SU(1,1) interferometer with coherent state inputs is also robust against internal losses. These results show that the SU(1,1) interferometer is a viable candidate for experimentally reaching the Heisenberg limit with current technology. Possible implementations of this interferometer using four-wave mixing in atomic vapors or an atom interferometer in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate are compared.

Improved phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer based on the internal single-path local squeezing operation

Qingqian Kang, Zekun Zhao, Zhao, Teng +2 more

Compared to passive interferometers, SU(1,1) interferometers exhibit superior phase sensitivity due to the incorporation of nonlinear elements that enhance their ability to detect phase shifts. However, the precision of these interferometers is significantly affected by photon losses, especially internal losses, which can limit the overall measurement accuracy. Addressing these issues is essential to fully realize the advantages of SU(1,1) interferometers in practical applications. Among the known resources of quantum metrology, one of the most practical and efficient is squeezing. We propose a theoretical scheme to improve the precision of phase measurement using homodyne detection by implementing the single-path local squeezing operation (LSO) inside the SU(1,1) interferometer, with the coherent state and the vacuum state as the input states. We not only analyze the effects of the single-path LSO scheme on the phase sensitivity and the quantum Fisher information (QFI) under both ideal and photon-loss cases but also compare the effects of different squeezing parameters r on the system performance. Our findings reveal that the internal single-path LSO scheme can enhance the phase sensitivity and the QFI, effectively improving the robustness of the SU(1,1) interferometer against internal and external photon losses. Additionally, a larger squeezing parameter r leads to a better performance of the interferometer.

Phase sensitivity for an SU(1,1) interferometer via multiphoton subtraction at the output port

Jiang, Tao, Zekun Zhao, Qingqian Kang +4 more

In the field of quantum precision measurement, enhancing phase sensitivity is crucial for various applications, including quantum metrology and quantum sensing technologies. We theoretically investigate the improvement in phase sensitivity and quantum Fisher information achieved through multiphoton subtraction operations at the output port of an SU(1,1) interferometer under conditions of photon loss. We use vacuum and coherent states as the inputs and detect the outputs by intensity detection. The results indicate that internal photon losses within the SU(1,1) interferometer have a more significant impact on the phase sensitivity compared to external photon losses. Moreover, increasing the number of photon subtractions m effectively enhances both the phase sensitivity and the quantum Fisher information. Notably, even under conditions of severe photon loss, the multiphoton subtraction operations can enable the phase sensitivity to surpass the standard quantum limit, approaching both the Heisenberg limit and the quantum Cramér-Rao bound. This study provides a new theoretical basis for enhancing the phase sensitivity in the SU(1,1) interferometer.

Improved phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer based on the internal single-path local squeezing operation

Compared with passive interferometers, SU(1,1) interferometers demonstrate superior phase sensitivity due to the incorporation of nonlinear elements that enhance their ability to detect phase shifts. Nevertheless, the measurement precision of these interferometers is considerably impacted by photon losses, particularly internal losses, thereby restricting the overall accuracy of measurements. Addressing these issues is essential to fully realize the advantages of SU(1,1) interferometers in practical applications. Among the available resources in quantum metrology, squeezing stands out as one of the most practical and efficient approaches. Phase sensitivity of two nonlinear interferometers with inputting entangled coherent states

Chaoping Wei, Xiao‐Yu Hu, Ya‐Fei Yu +1 more

We investigate the phase sensitivity of the SU(1,1) interfereometer [SU(1,1)I] and the modified Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MMZI) with the entangled coherent states (ECS) as inputs. We consider the ideal case and the situations in which the photon losses are taken into account. We find that, under ideal conditions, the phase sensitivity of both the MMZI and the SU(1,1)I can beat the shot-noise limit (SNL) and approach the Heisenberg limit (HL). In the presence of photon losses, the ECS can beat the coherent and squeezed states as inputs in the SU(1,1)I, and the MMZI is more robust against internal photon losses than the SU(1,1)I.

Improvement of phase sensitivity in an SU(1,1) interferometer via a phase shift induced by a Kerr medium

Shoukang Chang, Wei Ye, Huan Zhang +3 more

We theoretically study the phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer, in which the phase shift is induced by a Kerr medium, together with a coherent state input and homodyne detection. Considering both ideal and photon-loss cases, the results show that compared with the linear-phase-shift-based SU(1,1) interferometer, the Kerr-phase-shift-based SU(1,1) [KSU(1,1)] interferometer can show the significant enhancement of the phase sensitivity and quantum Fisher information even in the presence of photon losses. In particular, without photon losses, the phase sensitivity of the KSU(1,1) interferometer can break through the standard quantum limit and the Heisenberg limit (HL), even close to the super-HL. From the perspective of quantum resource theory, it is interesting that the phase shift induced by the Kerr medium shows an obvious advantage of low-cost input resources to obtain higher phase sensitivity and larger quantum Fisher information. These findings may have potential applications for state-of-the-art quantum information technology.
