Abstract

The experiment of Liran, Levin, Erez, and Jortner is clearly very interesting. Nevertheless, we feel that the numerical values which has been found for the broadening of the sodium $3S\ensuremath{-}4D$ two-photon transition by collisions with argon atoms is wrong. Using Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy we have measured this cross-section to be 1050\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}110 ${\mathrm{\AA{}}}^{2}$. This value is in good agreement with other experiments and with theoretical predictions. We present several possible interpretations of the value obtained by Liran et al.

Collisional depolarization of Zeeman coherences in the Cs1336pP3∕22 level: Double-resonance two-photon polarization spectroscopy

S. B. Bayram, Seda Kin, M. J. Welsh +1 more

An experimental investigation of the Cs $6s\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}S_{1∕2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}6p\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}P_{3∕2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}10s\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}S_{1∕2}$ double-resonance two-photon polarization spectrum has been made. In the investigation, a linear polarization degree was measured to extract the alignment depolarization cross section in the cesium $6p\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}P_{3∕2}$ level due to collisions between ground-level argon and excited $6p\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}P_{3∕2}$ cesium atoms over the Zeeman coherences. The spectra show strong depolarization of the Cs $6p\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}P_{3∕2}$ level. The measured alignment depolarization cross section value of 186 $(58)\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{\AA{}}}^{2}$ is in good agreement with the experiment and theoretical predictions.

Foreign gas pressure broadening and shifts of the 2S–4S two-photon transition in lithium

W. DeGraffenreid, Sarah C Campbell, Craig J. Sansonetti

We have observed broadening and shift of the 2S–4S Doppler-free two-photon transition of atomic Li by collisions with neon and argon buffer gases in a heat-pipe oven. Measured broadening and shift rates are presented and compared with theoretical predictions calculated in the impact approximation using three different interaction potentials. A superposition of polarization and modified Fermi potentials gives good agreement with the experimental data.

The influence of radiative collisions on two-photon atomic ionisation

Michele Crance, S. Feneuille

Investigates theoretically a new aspect of radiative collisions on two-photon ionisation of colliding atoms of different species A and B. The authors derive the main characteristics of the resonance appearing in the two-photon ionisation cross section of atom B when the laser frequency is tuned on a resonance transition of atom A which cannot itself be ionised by two-photon absorption. Under some realistic conditions and for reasonable values of the light energy density flux F ( approximately 1 MW cm -2 ), the cross section of the process considered varies as F 2/5 while its width varies as F 1/2 . These predictions are in reasonable agreement with a recent observation on the mixture Sr(A)-Cs(B) by Brechignac et al. (1980).

Broadening and shift of the sodium 3S-4D and 3S-5S two-photon lines perturbed by noble gases

F. Biraben, Bernard Cagnac, E. Giacobino +1 more

Investigates experimentally the broadening and the shift of the sodium 3S-4D and 3S-5S two-photon transitions without Doppler broadening by collisions with the noble gases. The broadening cross section is larger for the 3S-5S transition than for the 3S-4D transition. The experimental values for the 3S-5S transition are compared with semiclassical calculations using the van der Waals potential and the potentials calculated by Pascale and Vandeplanque (1974).

Collision-Induced Two-Photon Absorption of Ultrashort Light Pulses

Kenji Torizuka, Norio Morita, Tatsuo Yajima

The relation between the spectral character of a completely off-resonant two-photon absorption and the non-impact collision dynamics of a three-level atomic system is studied. A collisionally induced resonance character in the spectral dependence of the absorption probability is shown theoretically. Measured results about the dependence of fluorescence intensity on the incident light frequencies are ingood agreement with the theory. The interatomic potential between the sodium 4D state and argon is also estimated from experimental results.

Saturation effects in multiphoton ionization

John A. Yeazell, Michelle S. Malcuit, Carlos R. Stroud +1 more

We have studied two-photon resonant three-photon ionization of atomic sodium vapor. A dye laser tuned to either the 4d or 5s two-photon allowed transition was used to excite the atom and a second more intense laser (λ = 7000 Å) was used for ionization. The ion yield was measured as a function of resonant laser intensity and detuning, the nonresonant laser intensity, and the temporal overlap of the exciting and ionizing laser pulses. We have found1 that at high laser intensities the photoionization yield decreases as the nonresonant laser intensity is increased. When tuned to the 5s level a value of ~−0.6 was obtained for the exponential index even with the resonant laser tuned to maximize the ion yield. A theoretical model including the effects of Stark shift of the ground state, power broadening of the intermediate level due to saturation of the two-photon transition and by rapid transitions to the ionization continuum was used to predict the experimental results. Good agreement between theory and experiment required the use of a photoionization cross section for the 5s level which was ~20 times greater than the accepted value. Results for photoionization from the 4d level are also presented.
