Quantum Phase Transition and Magnetocaloric Effect in a Tetrameric Chain with Three-Spin Interaction

Abstract

We investigate the quantum phase transition (QPT) and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of a tetrameric chain with three-spin interaction using Green's function theory. The magnetization and gap analysis reveals a variety of quantum phases tuned by magnetic held and three-spin interaction, which can open up an energy gap, giving rise to the occurrence of zero magnetization plateau. However, strong three-spin couplings causing strong frustration will destroy the intermediate 1/2 plateau with emergence of a new gapless phase between two cusps. It favors achieving an enhanced MCE at the critical fields, where the minima of isoentropes as well as the valley-peak structure of Grüneisen ratio, signaling the accumulation of entropy, lead to cooling via adiabatic (de)magnetization processes. It is also found that the temperature dependence of specific heat combined with Grüneisen ratio can testify various quantum phases explicitly.

Quantum magnetization plateau and sign change of the magnetocaloric effect in a ferrimagnetic spin chain.

A. S. Boyarchenkov, Irina Gennad'evna Bostrem, Alexander S. Ovchinnikov

The magnetocaloric effect in the $(5∕2,1)$ ferrimagnetic chain is investiagted using a finite-cluster solver with central spin selection to reduce finite-size effects. We found that an enhanced magnetocaloric effect occurs at the boundary of the ground-state magnetization plateau. The calculated magnetic Gr\"uneisen parameter ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{H}$ exhibits strong signatures of a field-induced quantum phase transition at the critical magnetic field ${H}_{c}$ destroying the plateau. We obtain the characteristic increase ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{H}\ensuremath{\sim}{T}^{\ensuremath{-}1∕\ensuremath{\nu}z}$ near ${H}_{c}$ and the sign change ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{H}\ensuremath{\approx}\ensuremath{-}{G}_{r}∕(H\ensuremath{-}{H}_{c})$, in accordance with scaling theory predictions.

Magnetic-field-driven quantum criticality and thermodynamics in trimerized spin-1/2 isotropic XY chain with three-spin interactions

Linchao Ding, K.L. Yao, Hua‐Hua Fu

The quantum criticality and thermodynamics for the trimerized spin-1/2 isotropic XY chain with three-spin interactions in an external magnetic field are investigated by means of the Green's function theory combined with Jordan–Wigner transformation. The ground-state phase diagrams are explored, in which various phases are identified and described by typical M–h curves. Therein, two cusps emerge for strong three-spin interactions in two gapless phases at low and high fields, respectively. Moreover, the spin correlations and two-site entanglement entropy are calculated for a further understanding of quantum phase transition (QPT). It is also found that the magnetic-field-driven quantum criticality is closely related to the energy spectrum, in which an energy gap responsible for the appearance of 1/3 magnetization plateau can be opened up by three-spin interactions. The critical behavior disappears when the temperature becomes nonzero, yielding only a crossover behavior. In addition, the gapped low-lying excitations are responsible for the observed thermodynamic behaviors, wherein a structure with three peaks in the temperature dependence of specific heat is unveiled.

Characterization of gapless topological quantum phase transition via magnetocaloric effect

Linjie Ding, Yimeng Sun, Y. Zhong

It has attracted much attention on the interplay between topology and criticality in topological quantum systems, i.e., gapless topological quantum phase transition (TQPT) on critical lines. It is demonstrated that the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is able to signal the gapless TQPT in an extended Kitaev chain, which is witnessed by the unusual critical behavior of joint effect of Grüneison ration (GR) and isothermal entropy change. We uncover the conventional TQPT between gapped phases showing high symmetry (HS) and non-HS critical points with self-duality, which is signaled by the finite value of GR as T→0 and the largest inverse MCE with T-linear relation of isothermal entropy change. Two critical lines intersect at a multicritical point, at which there is a T-1 critical divergence of GR as well as T1/2 critical behavior of isothermal entropy change. It manifests a “weak” gapless TQPT on the one critical line, demonstrated by the shifting zero-crossing of GR without the largest inverse MCE. On the other critical line, it shows a “strong” gapless TQPT, which is evidenced by the negative dip of GR together with the largest inverse MCE. Our work provides a novel thermodynamic perspective on gapless TQPT.

Thermodynamics around magnetic phase transitions in alternating double-chain spin systems

Linjie Ding, Yuan Zhong, Shuaiwei Fan +1 more

The thermodynamics and quantum phase transitions of two typically alternating double-chain systems are investigated by Green's function theory. (i) For the completely antiferromagnetic (AFM) alternating double-chain, the low-temperature antiferromagnetism with gapped behavior is observed, which is in accordance with the experimental result. In a magnetic field, we unveil the ground state phase diagram with zero plateau, 1/2 plateau, and polarized ferromagnetic (FM) phases, as a result of the intra-cluster spin-singlet competition. Furthermore, the Grüneisen ratio is an excellent tool to identify the quantum criticality and testify various quantum phases. (ii) For the antiferromagnetically coupled FM alternating chains, the 1/2 magnetization plateau and double-peak structure of specific heat appear, which are also observed experimentally. Nevertheless, the M — h curve shows an anomalous behavior in an ultra-low field, which is ascribed to the effectively weak Haldane-like state, demonstrated by the two-site entanglement entropy explicitly.
