Abstract

We report the generation of undamped exciton-biexciton beats for coherent dynamics of excitons in InAs quantum dots at telecommunication wavelengths. The exciton-biexciton beat is damped rapidly in four-wave mixing measurements, but a six-wave mixing technique with three excitation pulses enables us to regenerate and control the exciton-biexciton beat perfectly. We have demonstrated the complete regeneration of the exciton-biexciton beat by adjusting the delay time between the first and second excitation pulses. This approach is different from conventional coherent control in quantum dots. Furthermore, the initial phase of the exciton-biexciton beat is controlled by using this technique. We show that the generation of undamped beats is a powerful tool for controlling quantum states.

Anomalous Time Evolution of Exciton Coherence in Highly-stacked InAs Quantum Dots

Junko Ishi‐Hayase, Kouichi Akahane, Naokatsu Yamamoto +3 more

We perform a transient four‐wave mixing experiment to investigate the initial dynamics of the time evolution of exciton coherence in highly‐stacked InAs quantum dots. For short time delays, an oscillatory behavior with a period of 31 ps is observed only in the weak excitation regime. The excitation density and polarization dependence of this oscillation cannot be explained by the usual quantum beat phenomena such as biexcitonic and bright excitonic beats.

Dynamics of excitons in individual InAs quantum dots revealed in four-wave mixing spectroscopy

Quentin Mermillod, Daniel Wigger, Valentin Delmonte +8 more

A detailed understanding of the population and coherence dynamics in optically driven individual emitters in solids and their signatures in ultrafast nonlinear-optical signals is of prime importance for their applications in future quantum and optical technologies. In a combined experimental and theoretical study on exciton complexes in single semiconductor quantum dots we reveal a detailed picture of the dynamics employing three-beam polarization-resolved four-wave mixing (FWM) micro-spectroscopy. The oscillatory dynamics of the FWM signals in the exciton-biexciton system is governed by the fine-structure splitting and the biexciton binding energy in an excellent quantitative agreement between measurement and analytical description. The analysis of the excitation conditions exhibits a dependence of the dynamics on the specific choice of polarization configuration, pulse areas and temporal ordering of driving fields. The interplay between the transitions in the four-level exciton system leads to rich evolution of coherence and population. Using two-dimensional FWM spectroscopy we elucidate the exciton-biexciton coupling and identify neutral and charged exciton complexes in a single quantum dot. Our investigations thus clearly reveal that FWM spectroscopy is a powerful tool to characterize spectral and dynamical properties of single quantum structures.

Coherent control of exciton–biexciton beats: direction selectivity of four‐wave‐mixing signals in experiment and microscopic theory

T. Voss, Ilja Rückmann, J. Gutowski +2 more

Abstract In experiments and simulations based on a microscopic theory the optical coherent control of exciton–biexciton beats in coherent four‐wave‐mixing signals from a semiconductor quantum well is demonstrated. It is found that a reduction of the beat amplitude for one four‐wave‐mixing direction may at the same time coincide with a large beat amplitude for the other direction. The results can be understood by considering that at least two‐photon processes are required to coherently excite biexcitonic transitions which are responsible for the occurrence of the beat structure in the four‐wave‐mixing signals. Beating of Exciton-Dressed States in a Single Semiconductor InGaAs/GaAs Quantum Dot

S. J. Boyle, A. J. Ramsay, A. M. Fox +3 more

We report picosecond control of excitonic dressed states in a single semiconductor quantum dot. A strong laser pulse couples the exciton and biexciton states, to form an Autler-Townes doublet of the neutral exciton transition. The Rabi-splitting, and hence the admixture of the dressed states follows the envelope of the picosecond control laser. We create a superposition of dressed states, and observe the resulting beat: a direct measurement of a Rabi oscillation in time delay rather than the usual power domain.

Coherent control of excitons in single and coupled quantum wells

Kazuhiro Komori, Takashi Asahara, Takeyoshi Sugaya +2 more

In this paper, we report the manipulation of coherent exciton in single- and coupled-quantum-wells using phase locked pulses generated by pulse shaping techniques instead of Michelson interferometer. The pulse shaping system with double liquid crystal spatial light modulator, and the Ti3+-sapphire laser with pulse width of about 120 fs are used to generate phase-locked pulses. GaAs/AlGaAs quantum-wells (exciton energy: E0 equals 1.5470 eV) and asymmetric double coupled quantum-well structures (exciton energy: E1 equals 1.5348 eV, E2 equals 1.5422 eV) are used in the experiments. Manipulation of coherent exciton are demonstrated by observation of both the reflectivity-change in the pump-probe and the diffracted power in the degenerate-four-wave-mixing (DFWM) measurements using phase- locked twin-pulse (k1) and single-pulse (k2). Coherent destruction in single quantum-well is observed by the rapid decrease of reflectivity-change after the arrival of the second pulse (pulse interval: 500 fs) and good coherent control with 87% of coherent carrier destruction is demonstrated at low excitation power of 0.15 mW. In case of coupled quantum-wells, the modulation of SLM is carefully set to the twin-pulse having the spectrum with a minimum at both exciton wavelengths for destructive condition. After arrival of the second pulse, coherent control of the quantum beats are observed in DFWM signal.
