OSCILLATION OF PHOTON DENSITY IN A RESONANCE MEDIUM

Abstract

Oscillations of the photon density in a finite size resonance medium are treated by quantum electrodynamics methods for the case when photon losses can be neglected. The oscillation period and maximum photon density are determined and the effect of narrowing of spectral lines with increasing photon density is explained. A comparison with the experimental data is carried out. (auth)

RESONANCE INTERACTION OF RADIATION WITH THE MEDIUM

A. P. Kazantsev, V.S. Smirnov

The case in which resonance interaction between radiation and the medium is determined by collective processes is considered. It is shown that for low radiation energies the interaction results in modulation of the electromagnetic field. The de-excitation time of the nonequilibrium medium due to collective processes is also determined. (auth)

Dynamics of the spontaneous emission of an atom into the photon-density-of-states gap: Solvable quantum-electrodynamical model

Rashit F. Nabiev, Po-Chiang Yeh, J. J. Sánchez-Mondragón

We consider the process of spontaneous emission of a two-level atom embedded into a periodic layered dielectric structure. When the resonant atomic frequency lies within the photon-density-of-states gap, of width \ensuremath{\Gamma}, the atom emits light during a time interval t\ensuremath{\Gamma}\ensuremath{\ll}1 until the spontaneous emission becomes fully inhibited. We discuss the enhancing of spontaneous emission by tuning the atomic resonance with a one-mode microcavity. In the \ensuremath{\lambda}/4-shifted distributed feedback microcavities which possess the \ensuremath{\delta}-function-like density of states, in the middle of the gap, the process of spontaneous emission has damped Rabi oscillation behavior; the damping depends on the width of the gap and the height of its walls. A profile of the density-of-states gap can be determined from the experimental data on the temporal behavior of the atomic spontaneous decay.

INSTABILITY OF A SYSTEM OF EXCITED OSCILLATORS WITH RESPECT TO ELECTROMAGNETIC PERTURBATIONS

A. V. Gaponov

Possible mechanisms of excited-oscillator autophasing in a radiation field, leading to instability of the system with respect to electromagnetic disturbances, are considered. It is shown that from the quantum point of view the instabillty of such systems may be due to unequal spacing of the (anharmonic) oscillator spectrum or to recoil during the emission of a photon. Collisional Destruction of the 63P1 State of Mercury

B. V. Waddell, G. S. Hurst

Inclusion of collisional destruction mechanisms as sink terms in the theory of imprisonment of resonance radiation appears to have been neglected in the case of the 2537-Å mercury line. In this paper, the Holstein photon transport equation is employed to determine the effect of destructive or self-quenching collisions between resonance state and ground state atoms, processes in which the resonance state is converted to another excited state with the release of kinetic energy. These mechanisms seem to explain experimental work in which the decay constant of the 2537-Å mercury line reaches a minimum and then increases with density. Comparison of theory with experimental data yields a cross section between 3.0 and 10.0 × 10−18 for the conversion of Hg(3P1) to metastable Hg(3P0) by two-body collisions with Hg(1S0). The sharp increase at high density of the decay constant of the 2537-Å mercury line has not been predicted by previous theories but is a general consequence of the inclusion of collisional destruction mechanisms.

Quantum electrodynamics of intense photon beams. New approximation method

Iwo Białynicki‐Birula, Zofia Białynicka-Birula

We develop a new approximation method for determining resonance properties of atomic systems interacting with intense photon beams. This method, based on an improved iteration procedure, leads to analytic expressions for the atomic density matrix from which positions of the resonances are determined. Our iteration procedure is more rapidly convergent than the continued-fraction method, and already in its second step reproduces the Bloch-Siegert shift of the one-photon resonance within 1 ppm.

On certain regularities of the response of a medium upon generation of the triple frequency of a few-period laser pulse in the case of its passage through an optically thin nonlinear layer

Svetlana A. Varentsova, Tatiana M. Lysak, Vyacheslav A. Trofimov

The response of a medium at the triple frequency under the action of few-period laser pulses is considered within the framework of the thin-optical-layer approximation for the case where the triple frequency is close to the natural frequency of the linear oscillator. It is shown that a bistable dependence of the polarization amplitudes on the external action amplitude simultaneously appears at both the natural frequency and the frequency of the external action. This allows one, in particular, to reveal the presence of bistability of the regime of third harmonic generation in a physical experiment by using the transmitted radiation of the acting pulse. A decrease in the duration of the pulse incident on the medium leads to an increase in the hysteresis loops. The effect of the absolute phase of a short pulse on the spectral composition of the response of the medium is studied. For pulses of medium duration, in addition to the resonant response of the medium, the presence of the dynamic response of the medium at the triple frequency was revealed, despite a detuning of the latter from the resonance. The presence of this frequency in the spectrum of the response of the medium results in the dependence of the resonant response of the medium on the absolute phase even for a sufficiently long pulse containing tens oscillations of the electric field strength under the pulse envelope. To obtain the dynamics of the spectral lines from the results of computer simulation, the Fourier-Gabor method is used, the applicability of which is demonstrated by the comparison of the results obtained on its basis with the corresponding analytical dependences.
