INSTABILITY OF A SYSTEM OF EXCITED OSCILLATORS WITH RESPECT TO ELECTROMAGNETIC PERTURBATIONS

Abstract

Possible mechanisms of excited-oscillator autophasing in a radiation field, leading to instability of the system with respect to electromagnetic disturbances, are considered. It is shown that from the quantum point of view the instabillty of such systems may be due to unequal spacing of the (anharmonic) oscillator spectrum or to recoil during the emission of a photon. Reversal of Radiation Reaction Force and Instability of the Ground State of an Atom Located above the Surface of an Active Medium

Vl. V. Kocharovsky, Vl. V. Kocharovsky, Alexey A. Belyanin

It is shown that spontaneous emission of an excited atom is suppressed, and electromagnetic instability of the ground state is possible, if an atom is located in the vicinity of an active medium which amplifies the propagating radiation. The effect is due to a modified and phase-shifted near field of an oscillating atomic dipole, which prevails over the usual radiation reaction field related to the wave zone. The necessary conditions for the reversal of the total electromagnetic back reaction are found, and possible experimental realizations are discussed.

Transitions

P. C. W. Davies, David S. Betts

In many practical cases a stationary system is perturbed in some way, inducing it to undergo transitions between the otherwise stationary states. Perhaps the best example concerns the radiative transitions of atomic electrons in which the disturbance of an external electromagnetic field causes the electrons to jump between energy levels, emitting or absorbing photons. Equation is a statement of the classical law of conservation of energy. The stimulated emission and absorption of radiation both have close classical analogues. If a simple harmonic oscillator is driven by a sinusoidal electromagnetic field it can gain or lose energy depending on phase angles. The existence of spontaneous emission implies that all excited states of electrical systems are unstable and will eventually decay to the ground state by photon emission. Quantum systems thus comply with the fundamental principle that physical systems tend to seek out their state of lowest energy and maximum entropy.

Anharmonic Quantum Oscillator as a Model of Resonant Optics

Ashat M. Basharov

Abstract The specific features of the theory of resonant interactions of electromagnetic coherent fields with an anharmonic oscillator, as compared to the case of a multilevel atom, are highlighted. It is shown that within the framework of the local approach—the algebraic resonance perturbation theory—it is possible to account for the requirements of the global approach of the theory of open quantum systems. Based on the auxiliary model of the ‘‘internal nonlinearity’’ of the anharmonic oscillator, the possible conditions for the resonance of a coherent wave with an anharmonic oscillator involving the absorption of a single photon are analyzed.

Nonlinear Effects in an Ensemble of Anharmonic Oscillators

Ashat M. Basharov

Abstract The author considers three types of resonance of a classical coherent electromagnetic wave with the same carrier frequency as a quantum anharmonic oscillator, based on algebraic perturbation theory. The corresponding effective operators of the dipole moment of the anharmonic oscillator are obtained, allowing the polarization of the excited medium under the considered resonance conditions to be calculated. Some possibilities are established for the creation of nonlinear effects.

RESONANCE INTERACTION OF RADIATION WITH THE MEDIUM

A. P. Kazantsev, V.S. Smirnov

The case in which resonance interaction between radiation and the medium is determined by collective processes is considered. It is shown that for low radiation energies the interaction results in modulation of the electromagnetic field. The de-excitation time of the nonequilibrium medium due to collective processes is also determined. (auth)
