BCS Wave-Function Approach to the BEC-BCS Crossover of Exciton-Polariton Condensates

Tim Byrnes, Tomoyuki Horikiri, Natsuko Ishida +1 more

The crossover between low and high density regimes of exciton-polariton condensates is examined using a BCS wave-function approach. Our approach is an extension of the BEC-BCS crossover theory for excitons, but includes a cavity photon field. The approach can describe both the low density limit, where the system can be described as a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of exciton-polaritons, and the high density limit, where the system enters a photon-dominated regime. In contrast to the exciton BEC-BCS crossover where the system approaches an electron-hole plasma, the polariton high density limit has strongly correlated electron-hole pairs. At intermediate densities, there is a regime with BCS-like properties, with a peak at nonzero momentum of the singlet pair function. We calculate the expected photoluminescence and give several experimental signatures of the crossover.

Photoluminescence and gain/absorption spectra of a highly excited exciton-polariton condensate

Ryo Hanai, P. B. Littlewood, Yoji Ohashi

We investigate theoretically nonequilibrium effects on photoluminescence and gain/absorption spectra of a highly-excited exciton-polariton condensate, by employing the combined Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with the generalized random phase approximation extended to the Keldysh formalism. Our calculated photoluminescence spectra is in semiquantitative agreement with experiments, where features such as a blue shift of the emission from the condensate, the appearance of the dispersionless feature of a diffusive Goldstone mode, and the suppression of the dispersive profile of the mode are obtained. We show that the nonequilibrium nature of the exciton-polariton condensate strongly suppresses the visibility of the Bogoliubov dispersion in the negative energy branch (ghost branch) in photoluminescence spectra. We also show that the trace of this branch can be captured as a hole burning effect in gain/absorption spectra. Our results indicate that the nonequilibrium nature of the exciton-polariton condensate strongly reduces quantum depletion, while a scattering channel to the ghost branch is still present.

On the condensation of exciton polaritons in microcavities induced by a magnetic field

Vladimir P. Kochereshko, Darya Avdoshina, Pavlos G. Savvidis +5 more

The photoluminescence spectra of exciton polaritons in microcavities under conditions of three-dimensional quantization are studied as a factor of the density of the optical excitation and magnetic field. The behavior of the degree of circular polarization of the exciton luminescence in a magnetic field shows that, when the concentration of excitons increases, they condense at the lowest Zeeman sublevel.
