Program realization of simulation tools of low-density codecs: effective architecture of a decoder for massive parallel computations on graphic processors

Abstract The article deals with the peculiarities of modeling the characteristics of low-density parity-check codes (LDPC) in terms of their decoding. When decoding low-density parity-check codes in various communication standards, the iterative belief propagation algorithm (BP) and its various modifications - Pearl’s algorithm, sum-of-products algorithm - are widely used. In the article, special attention is given to this algorithm. The BP algorithm is a message-passing algorithm on a graphical model and consists of two basic messaging procedures between the nodes in the Tanner graph for LDPC code. The issues of constructing an effective architecture for an iterative decoder operating on the belief propagation algorithm in a heterogeneous system with massively parallel computing on a graphics processing unit are considered. It is shown that the use of the GPU allows to achieve a significant gain in decoding time with a sufficient size of the test matrix (a sufficient number of code and test nodes), obtained due to the parallelism of the architecture. Expressions for calculation of the size of the “working group” are given. The benefit of using a modified decoder architecture is estimated.

CONVERGENCE ALGORITHM FOR LDPC CODEC OF LOW COMPLEXITY BASED ON NEURAL NETWORK

The paper describes a modified soft-computing technique for a less computationally complex LDPC encoder/decoder. This learning technique is computationally less complex than the conventional gradient learning method and is highly accurate. I used two forms of approximate lower triangle calculation to change the H-matrix, namely systematic Gaussian elimination coding and coding with complexity that grows linearly with block size. The performance of the developed technique is compared with traditional methods in terms of maximum error, minimum error and computational complexity. I developed an LDPC encoder/decoder based on an artificial neural network to emulate the codec. A neural network has three layers, namely an input layer, one hidden layer and an output layer. The number of neurons in the input and output layers depends on the size of the parity check matrix of the LDPC encoder. I compared the performance of the proposed LDPC codec with the performance of conventional codecs in terms of the learning algorithm. The proposed learning algorithm has X-L multiplication as opposed to X2 and X multiplication of conventional methods. I also propose an efficient architecture for the neural network to act as a generic LDPC codec by choosing either 0/1 for a set bit

The information presented in this article is aimed at reducing the computational complexity of modeling a noise-tolerant decoder using the MIN-SUM algorithm. In this paper, we analyze the performance of modified parity control matrices in terms of the bit error rate (BER) for the code length of the IEEE 802.11 n and 504 standards. We describe a computational analysis of modified parity-based control matrices. We give an analysis of the effectiveness of the lower diagonal parity matrix (NDM), and based on the double diagonal parity matrix (DDM), we analyzed the BER of graphs and estimated computational complexity. The number of calculations is significantly less in the NDM compared to other matrices. NDM is suitable for moderate decoding performance with less computational complexity and based on DDM structures. The proposed modifications are applicable to improve the performance of de-coding with a compromise on computational complexity

The near-capacity performance and effective decoding algorithms of Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes have made them a mainstay of contemporary error correction. With an emphasis on iterative techniques like the Belief Propagation (BP) algorithm, the Min-Sum algorithm, and their variations, this paper offers a thorough analysis of decoding algorithms for LDPC codes. We investigate the trade-offs between various algorithmic techniques’ computational complexity, decoding latency, and error correction performance. Particular focus is placed on new methods and hardware-friendly algorithms that are tailored for next-generation communication systems, such 5 G and beyond.

Liuguo Yin, Jianhua Lü, Khaled B. Letaief +1 more

A modified belief-propagation algorithm is proposed for decoding of irregular low-density parity-check codes. This algorithm effectively reduces the decoding complexity while achieving a BER performance near to or even better than that of the standard belief-propagation algorithm.

Reduced complexity iterative decoding of low-density parity check codes based on belief propagation

M.P.C. Fossorier, Miodrag J. Mihaljević, Hirotaka Imai

Two simplified versions of the belief propagation algorithm for fast iterative decoding of low-density parity check codes on the additive white Gaussian noise channel are proposed. Both versions are implemented with real additions only, which greatly simplifies the decoding complexity of belief propagation in which products of probabilities have to be computed. Also, these two algorithms do not require any knowledge about the channel characteristics. Both algorithms yield a good performance-complexity trade-off and can be efficiently implemented in software as well as in hardware, with possibly quantized received values.
