Decoherence of an atomic condensate in a double-well trap at optical probing

Abstract

A model of an atomic condensate in a double-well potential with the possibility of tunneling between wells has been considered. The process of tunneling is modified by the optical probing of one of the wells by a beam of nonresonance radiation. The phase of the passing beam is correlated with the number of atoms in the probed well; as a result, coherence between states with different numbers of atoms is partially destroyed. The solution of the initial quantum kinetic equation for the states of the condensate has been obtained under the assumption of the dominant role of such a decoherence. An expression has been obtained for the correlation function of the amplitude of radiation passing through the probed well. The opposite situation of a slow destruction of coherence as compared to the rate of tunneling has also been considered. The stationary distribution in the numbers of atoms in wells for a given number of atoms in the condensate is uniform in both cases.

The dark resonances in the case of the absorption of optical radiation in double tunneling-coupled quantum wells

Litvinov, A. N., К. А. Баранцев, Boris G. Matisov +2 more

This work is devoted to the research of conditions of the dark resonance (coherent population trapping) of the interaction of the laser radiation with tunneling-coupled quantum wells. The phase sensitive dependence of dark resonances has been investigated. We obtained that destruction as well as restoration of the dark resonances of the coherent population trapping is possible in dependence on algebraic sum of the phases of exciting fields. It is shown that the phase variation of exciting fields influences on the absorption and dispersion of the probe field in a medium with quantum wells.

Self-Trapping State and Atomic Tunnelling Current of an Atomic Bose–Einstein Condensate Interacting with a Laser Field in a Double-Well Potential

Zhao-Xian Yu, Jiao Zhi-Yong

We present a theoretical treatment of dynamics of an atomic Bose–Einstein condensation interacting with a single-mode quantized travelling-wave laser field in a double-well potential. When the atom-field system is initially in a coherent state, expressions for the energy exchange between atoms and photons are derived. It is revealed that atoms in the two wells can be in a self-trapping state when the tunnelling frequency satisfies two specific conditions, in which the resonant and far off-resonant cases are included. It is found that there is an alternating current with two different sinusoidal oscillations between the two wells, but no dc characteristic of the atomic tunnelling current occurs. It should be emphasized that when without the laser field, both the population difference and the atomic tunnelling current are only a single oscillation. But they will respectively become a superposition of two oscillations with different oscillatory frequencies in the presence of the laser field. For the two oscillations of the population difference, one always has an increment in the oscillatory frequency, the other can have an increment or a decrease under different cases. These conclusions are also suitable to those of the atomic tunnelling current. As a possible application, by measurement of the atomic tunnelling current between the two wells, the number of Bose-condensed atoms can be evaluated. By properly selecting the laser field, the expected atomic tunnelling current can be obtained too.

Quantum-correlated double-well tunneling of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

H. T. Ng, C. K. Law, P. T. Leung

We investigate a double-well tunneling process in Bose condensates of two interacting species. We show that particles of different species can tunnel as pairs through the potential barrier between the two wells in opposite directions. Such a correlated motion of tunneling atoms leads to the generation of quantum entanglement between two macroscopically coherent systems. The strong correlations are manifested in the particle number sum and the phase difference variables.

Adiabatic splitting, transport, and self-trapping of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential

Carlo Ottaviani, V. Ahufinger, R. Corbalán +1 more

We show that the adiabatic dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a double-well potential can be described in terms of a dark variable resulting from the combination of the population imbalance and the spatial atomic coherence between the two wells. By means of this dark variable, we extend, to the nonlinear matter-wave case, the recent proposal by Vitanov and Shore [Phys. Rev. A 73, 053402 (2006)] on adiabatic passage techniques to coherently control the population of two internal levels of an atom or molecule. We investigate the conditions to adiabatically split or transport a BEC as well as to prepare an adiabatic self-trapping state by the optimal delayed temporal variation of the tunneling rate via either the energy bias between the two wells or the BEC nonlinearity. The emergence of nonlinear eigenstates and unstable stationary solutions of the system as well as their role in the breaking down of the adiabatic dynamics is investigated in detail.

Coherent Photo-Association in Double-Well Bose–Einstein Condensates

Jing Hui, Mo‐Lin Ge, Yuzhu Wang

We investigate the quantum dynamics and statistics of an interesting system of the double-well Bose–Einstein condensates in the presence of a coherent photo-association process occurring in one of the two wells. Through the analytical solutions of a simplified model of the atom–molecule condensate, our results show the important impact of initial state preparations on the atomic coherence, especially the different squeezing behaviour for the case of photo-association via left-well atoms tunnelling from initial right-well atomic condensate, which holds the promise to be observed in the present laboratory.
