Abstract

This work is devoted to the research of conditions of the dark resonance (coherent population trapping) of the interaction of the laser radiation with tunneling-coupled quantum wells. The phase sensitive dependence of dark resonances has been investigated. We obtained that destruction as well as restoration of the dark resonances of the coherent population trapping is possible in dependence on algebraic sum of the phases of exciting fields. It is shown that the phase variation of exciting fields influences on the absorption and dispersion of the probe field in a medium with quantum wells.

Tunneling Control of Optical Properties of a Quantum Well from Adjacent Quantum Well by Coherent Population Trapping Effect

К. А. Баранцев, A. N. Litvinov, Величко Елена Николаевна

The coherent population trapping eect in double tunnel-coupled quantum wells is analyzed. One of two quantum wells interacts with the two-frequency laser radiation and low-frequency eld, thus forming a closed contour of excitation. It is possible to control the excited level population in such a scheme of excitation by changing relative phases of the elds in the coherent population trapping state. The quantum well is bound to the other quantum well by tunnel coupling of the excited levels, therefore the population and optical properties of the other quantum well depend on the coherent population trapping state in the rst quantum well and can be controlled.

Decoherence of an atomic condensate in a double-well trap at optical probing

L. V. Il’ichev, P. L. Chapovsky

A model of an atomic condensate in a double-well potential with the possibility of tunneling between wells has been considered. The process of tunneling is modified by the optical probing of one of the wells by a beam of nonresonance radiation. The phase of the passing beam is correlated with the number of atoms in the probed well; as a result, coherence between states with different numbers of atoms is partially destroyed. The solution of the initial quantum kinetic equation for the states of the condensate has been obtained under the assumption of the dominant role of such a decoherence. An expression has been obtained for the correlation function of the amplitude of radiation passing through the probed well. The opposite situation of a slow destruction of coherence as compared to the rate of tunneling has also been considered. The stationary distribution in the numbers of atoms in wells for a given number of atoms in the condensate is uniform in both cases.

Nonlinear properties of optically dense medium excited by multifrequency laser radiation

К. А. Баранцев, A. N. Litvinov, Evgeniy Popov

This work is devoted to nonlinear effects in the atomic medium excited by multifrequency laser radiation. We have considered collective light scattering in the optically dense medium in conditions of coherent population trapping. Propagation of intermode correlation coefficient was calculated and it was found that correlation can increase in the medium. Light shifts of the coherent population trapping resonances and ways of their suppression were analyzed. Propagation of radiation in the medium with closed excitation scheme was investigated.

Quantum switching based on the dark resonance

Byoung Seung HAM

Summary form only given. In a three-level system, two resonant optical fields can excite spin coherence on the ground states via two-photon resonance. One of the two-superposition states created by the atom-field interactions is decoupled from the excited state. Thus, the population can be trapped in that state showing non-absorption resonance. The essential feature of this decoupled state is dark resonance. Therefore, the existence of the dark resonance is a basis of non-absorption resonance, coherent population trapping, and electromagnetically induced transparency. In a four-level system, however, the two-laser induced spin coherence can be broken when a third laser is applied. At the same time, new coherence between the third laser and one of the pre-existed lasers is created. This phenomenon is useful for optical switching owing to annihilation and creation of the dark resonance in the four-level system. It is noted that the switching time depends on the dark resonance build-up time, which is inversely proportional to the applied Rabi frequency. Numerical simulations are shown for potentially ultrahigh-speed optical switches. Each diffracted four-wave mixing signal is proportional to the spin coherence strength. For a preliminary experiment, a spectral hole-burning crystal is used. The intensity of the diffracted signals is reversed at line center. This coherence switching effect is based on the dark resonance interactions.

Observation of "double-dark" resonances

George R. Welch, Vladimir A. Sautenkov, Michael M. Kash +1 more

Summary form only given. The phenomenon of "dark resonances" or coherent population trapping is a well known concept in optics and laser spectroscopy. It can be considered as the basis for such effects as electromagnetically induced transparency and lasing without inversion. We report the observation of the novel spectral features which arise in systems where multiple quantum superposition states are coupled and interact coherently. These novel resonances correspond to the recently predicted "double-dark states". In the experiment, an optically thin ensemble of rubidium-37 atoms in zero magnetic field is excited in a /spl Lambda/ configuration with circularly polarized light from a pair of 789 nm diode lasers.
