Abstract

We investigate a double-well tunneling process in Bose condensates of two interacting species. We show that particles of different species can tunnel as pairs through the potential barrier between the two wells in opposite directions. Such a correlated motion of tunneling atoms leads to the generation of quantum entanglement between two macroscopically coherent systems. The strong correlations are manifested in the particle number sum and the phase difference variables.

Macroscopic quantum tunneling of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Kenichi Kasamatsu, Yukinori Yasui, Makoto Tsubota

We show theoretically the existence of a metastable state and the possibility of decay to the ground state through macroscopic quantum tunneling in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive interactions. Numerical analysis of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations clarifies the metastable states whose configuration preserves or breaks the symmetry of the trapping potential, depending on the interspecies interaction and the particle number. We calculate the tunneling decay rate of the metastable state by using the collective coordinate method under the WKB approximation. Then the height of the energy barrier is estimated by the saddle point solution. It is found that macroscopic quantum tunneling is observable in a wide range of particle numbers. Macroscopic quantum coherence between two distinct states is discussed; this might give an additional coherent property of two-component Bose condensed systems. Thermal effects on the decay rate are estimated.

The Quantum Tunneling Between Two-Component Bose-Einstein Condensates in a Double-Well Configuration

Guofeng Zhang, Shu‐Shen Li, Liang Jiu-Qing

In terms of exact solution of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation. we examine the quantum tunneling process in Bose condensates of two interacting species trapped in a double well configuration. We use the two series of time-dependent SU(2) gauge transformation to diagonalize the Hamilton operator obtain analytic time-evolution formulas of the population imbalance and the berry phase. The particle population imbalance (a(L)(+)a(L) - a(R)(+)a(R)) of species A between the two wells is studied analytically.

Coherently controlled entanglement generation in a binary Bose-Einstein condensate

Niklas Teichmann, Christoph Weiß

Considering a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential, a method to generate a Bell state consisting of two spatially separated condensates is suggested. For repulsive interactions, the required tunnelling control is achieved numerically by varying the amplitude of a sinusoidal potential difference between the wells. Both numerical and analytical calculations reveal the emergence of a highly entangled mesoscopic state.

Tunneling Dynamics of Two-Species Bose–Einstein Condensates

Yang Li-Min, Zhao-Xian Yu, Jiao Zhi-Yong

We have studied the tunneling dynamics of two-species Bose–Einstein condensates. It is shown that the population difference and the Josephson-like tunneling current between the two condensates exhibit oscillation behaviors and there exists macroscopic quantum self-trapping, which strongly depends on the initial state, interatomic nonlinear self-interaction, interspecies nonlinear interaction, and the total number of atoms in the two condensates.

Coherent control of atomic spin currents in a double well

H. T. Ng, Shih‐I Chu

We propose a method for controlling the atomic currents of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well by applying an external field to the atoms in one of the potential wells. We study the ground-state properties of the system and show that the directions of spin currents and net-particle tunneling can be manipulated by adiabatically varying the coupling strength between the atoms and the field. This system can be used to study spin and tunneling phenomena across a wide range of interaction parameters. In addition, spin-squeezed states can be generated. It is useful for quantum information processing and quantum metrology.
