Dynamic Structure Factor of an Optically Trapped Dipolar Bose—Einstein Condensate

Abstract

Motivated by the recent experimental achievements in using the Bragg spectroscopy to measure the excitation spectrum of an ultra-cold atomic system with long-range interactions, we investigate the dynamic structure factor of a cigar-shaped dipolar Bose condensate trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattices. Our results show that the Bogoliubov bands of the system, particularly the lowest one, can be significantly influenced when one tunes the dipole orientation. Consequently, the calculated static structure factor of an optically trapped dipolar Bose gas shows marked difference from the non-dipolar one. Moreover, we show that the effects of dipole-dipole interaction on the dynamic structure factor is also strongly affected by the strength of the optical confinement.

Effects of three-body interaction on dynamic and static structure factors of an optically-trapped Bose gas

Wei Qi, Zhaoxin Liang, Zhang Zhi-dong

We investigate how three-body interactions affect the elementary excitations and dynamic structure factor of a Bose—Einstein condensate trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice. To this end, we numerically solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and then the corresponding Bogoliubov equations. Our results show that three-body interactions can change both the Bogoliubov band structure and the dynamical structure factor dramatically, especially in the case of the two-body interaction being relatively small. Furthermore, when the optical lattice is strong enough, the analytical results, combined with the sum-rule approach, help us to understand that: the effects of three-body interactions on the static structure factor can be significantly amplified by an optical lattice. Our predictions should be observable within the current Bragg spectroscopy experiment.

Roton spectroscopy in a harmonically trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate

P. B. Blakie, D. Baillie, R. N. Bisset

We study a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with dipole-dipole interactions in a regime where a roton spectrum emerges. We show that the roton spectrum is clearly revealed in the static and dynamic structure factors which can be measured using Bragg spectroscopy. We develop and validate a theory based on the local-density approximation for the dynamic structure factor.

Dynamic structure factor of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional optical lattice

C. Menotti, Meret Krämer, Лев П. Питаевский +1 more

We study the effect of a one-dimensional periodic potential on the dynamic structure factor of an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature. We show that, due to phononic correlations, the excitation strength toward the first band develops a typical oscillating behavior as a function of the momentum transfer, and vanishes at even multiples of the Bragg momentum. The effects of interactions on the static structure factor are found to be significantly amplified by the presence of the optical potential. Our predictions can be tested in stimulated photon scattering experiments.

Band structures of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in one-dimensional lattices

YuanYao Lin, Ray‐Kuang Lee, Yee-Mou Kao +1 more

We derive the effective Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a cigar-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in one-dimensional lattices and investigate the band structures numerically. Due to the anisotropic and the long-ranged dipole-dipole interaction in addition to the known contact interaction, we elucidate the possibility of modifying the band structures by changing the alignment of the dipoles with the axial direction. With the considerations of the transverse parts and the practical physical parameters of a cigar-shaped trap, we show the possibility to stabilize an attractive condensate simply by adjusting the orientation angle of dipoles. Some interesting Bloch waves at several particle current densities are identified for possible experimental observations.

Bose-Einstein condensation of trapped atoms with dipole interactions

Kwangsik T. Nho, David Paul Landau

The path-integral Monte Carlo method is used to simulate dilute trapped Bose gases and to investigate the equilibrium properties at finite temperatures. The quantum particles have a long-range dipole-dipole interaction and a short-range $s$-wave interaction. Using an anisotropic pseudopotential for the long-range dipolar interaction and a hard-sphere potential for the short-range $s$-wave interaction, we calculate the energetics and structural properties as a function of temperature and the number of particles. Also, in order to determine the effects of dipole-dipole forces and the influence of the trapping field on the dipolar condensate, we use two cylindrically symmetric harmonic confinements (a cigar-shaped trap and a disk-shaped trap). We find that the net effect of dipole-dipole interactions is governed by the trapping geometry. For a cigar-shaped trap, the net contribution of dipolar interactions is attractive and the shrinking of the density profiles is observed. For a disk-shaped trap, the net effect of long-range dipolar forces is repulsive and the density profiles expand.

Bragg spectroscopy of a cigar-shaped Bose condensate in optical lattices

Tarun Kanti Ghosh, Kazushige Machida

We study properties of excited states of an array of weakly coupled quasi-two-dimensional Bose condensates by using the hydrodynamic theory. We calculate multibranch Bogoliubov-Bloch spectrums and its corresponding eigenfunctions. The spectrum of the axial excited states and its eigenfunctions strongly depends on the coupling among various discrete radial modes within a given symmetry. This mode coupling is due to the presence of radial trapping potential. The multibranch nature of the Bogoliubov-Bloch spectrum and its dependence on the mode-coupling can be realized by analyzing dynamic structure factor and momentum transferred to the system in Bragg spectroscopy experiments. We also study dynamic structure factor and momentum transferred to the condensate due to the Bragg spectroscopy experiment.
