Abstract

We derive the effective Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a cigar-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in one-dimensional lattices and investigate the band structures numerically. Due to the anisotropic and the long-ranged dipole-dipole interaction in addition to the known contact interaction, we elucidate the possibility of modifying the band structures by changing the alignment of the dipoles with the axial direction. With the considerations of the transverse parts and the practical physical parameters of a cigar-shaped trap, we show the possibility to stabilize an attractive condensate simply by adjusting the orientation angle of dipoles. Some interesting Bloch waves at several particle current densities are identified for possible experimental observations.

Mean-field regime of trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in one and two dimensions

Yongyong Cai, Matthias Rosenkranz, Zhen Lei +1 more

We derive rigorous one- and two-dimensional mean-field equations for cigar- and pancake-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates with arbitrary polarization angle. We show how the dipolar interaction modifies the contact interaction of the strongly confined atoms. In addition, our equations introduce a nonlocal potential, which is anisotropic for pancake-shaped condensates. We propose to observe this anisotropy via measurement of the condensate aspect ratio. We also derive analytically approximate density profiles from our equations. Both the numerical solutions of our reduced mean-field equations and the analytical density profiles agree well with numerical solutions of the full Gross-Pitaevskii equation while being more efficient to compute.

Bright solitons in the one-dimensional discrete Gross-Pitaevskii equation with dipole-dipole interactions

Goran Gligorić, Aleksandra Maluckov, Ljupčo R. Hadžievski +1 more

A model of the Bose-Einstein condensate of dipolar atoms, confined in a combination of a cigar-shaped trap and deep optical lattice acting in the axial direction, is introduced, taking into regard the dipole-dipole (DD) and contact interactions. The model is based on the discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with an additional nonlocal term accounting for the DD interactions. The existence and stability of fundamental unstaggered solitons are studied for attractive and repulsive signs of both the local and nonlocal interactions. The DD forces strongly affect the shape and stability of on-site and intersite discrete solitons. The corresponding existence and stability regions in the parametric space are summarized in the form of diagrams, which feature a multiple stability exchange between the on-site and intersite families; in the limit of the dominating DD attraction, the on-site solitons are stable, while their intersite counterparts are not. We also demonstrate that the DD interactions reduce the Peierls-Nabarro barrier and enhance the mobility of the discrete solitons.

Collapse instability of solitons in the nonpolynomial Schrödinger equation with dipole–dipole interactions

G Gligorić, A Maluckov, Ljupčo R. Hadžievski +1 more

A model of the Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) of dipolar atoms, confined in a combination of a cigar-shaped trap and optical lattice acting in the axial direction, is studied in the framework of the one-dimensional (1D) nonpolynomial Schrödinger equation (NPSE) with additional terms describing long-range dipole–dipole (DD) interactions. The NPSE makes it possible to describe the collapse of localized modes, which was experimentally observed in the self-attractive BEC confined in tight traps, in the framework of the 1D description. We study the influence of the DD interactions on the dynamics of bright solitons, especially concerning their collapse-induced instability. Both attractive and repulsive contact and DD interactions are considered. The results are summarized in the form of stability/collapse diagrams in a respective parametric space. In particular, it is shown that the attractive DD interactions may prevent the collapse instability in the condensate with attractive contact interactions.

Dynamic Structure Factor of an Optically Trapped Dipolar Bose—Einstein Condensate

Wei Qi, Zhaoxin Liang, Zhang Zhi-dong

Motivated by the recent experimental achievements in using the Bragg spectroscopy to measure the excitation spectrum of an ultra-cold atomic system with long-range interactions, we investigate the dynamic structure factor of a cigar-shaped dipolar Bose condensate trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattices. Our results show that the Bogoliubov bands of the system, particularly the lowest one, can be significantly influenced when one tunes the dipole orientation. Consequently, the calculated static structure factor of an optically trapped dipolar Bose gas shows marked difference from the non-dipolar one. Moreover, we show that the effects of dipole-dipole interaction on the dynamic structure factor is also strongly affected by the strength of the optical confinement.

Improved low-dimensional wave equations for cigar-shaped and disk-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

Mitchell J. Knight, Thomas Bland, Parker, Nick G. +1 more

Within the formalism of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we derive effective one- and two-dimensional equations for cigar- and pancake-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates with arbitrary polarization angle. These are based on an ansatz for the condensate wavefunction whose width in the tightly-confined direction/s is treated variationally. The equations constitute a coupled partial differential for the low-dimensional wavefunction and algebraic equations for the width parameters. This approach accurately predicts the ground state densities of cigar-shaped and pancake-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates, and gives strong agreement with the three-dimensional results, even as the trapping is relaxed away from the strict quasi-one- and quasi-two-dimensional regimes. This approach offers a significant improvement over the standard one- and two-dimensional reduction.

Bose-Einstein condensation of trapped atoms with dipole interactions

Kwangsik T. Nho, David Paul Landau

The path-integral Monte Carlo method is used to simulate dilute trapped Bose gases and to investigate the equilibrium properties at finite temperatures. The quantum particles have a long-range dipole-dipole interaction and a short-range $s$-wave interaction. Using an anisotropic pseudopotential for the long-range dipolar interaction and a hard-sphere potential for the short-range $s$-wave interaction, we calculate the energetics and structural properties as a function of temperature and the number of particles. Also, in order to determine the effects of dipole-dipole forces and the influence of the trapping field on the dipolar condensate, we use two cylindrically symmetric harmonic confinements (a cigar-shaped trap and a disk-shaped trap). We find that the net effect of dipole-dipole interactions is governed by the trapping geometry. For a cigar-shaped trap, the net contribution of dipolar interactions is attractive and the shrinking of the density profiles is observed. For a disk-shaped trap, the net effect of long-range dipolar forces is repulsive and the density profiles expand.
