Abstract

Within the formalism of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we derive effective one- and two-dimensional equations for cigar- and pancake-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates with arbitrary polarization angle. These are based on an ansatz for the condensate wavefunction whose width in the tightly-confined direction/s is treated variationally. The equations constitute a coupled partial differential for the low-dimensional wavefunction and algebraic equations for the width parameters. This approach accurately predicts the ground state densities of cigar-shaped and pancake-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates, and gives strong agreement with the three-dimensional results, even as the trapping is relaxed away from the strict quasi-one- and quasi-two-dimensional regimes. This approach offers a significant improvement over the standard one- and two-dimensional reduction.

Mean-field regime of trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in one and two dimensions

Yongyong Cai, Matthias Rosenkranz, Zhen Lei +1 more

We derive rigorous one- and two-dimensional mean-field equations for cigar- and pancake-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates with arbitrary polarization angle. We show how the dipolar interaction modifies the contact interaction of the strongly confined atoms. In addition, our equations introduce a nonlocal potential, which is anisotropic for pancake-shaped condensates. We propose to observe this anisotropy via measurement of the condensate aspect ratio. We also derive analytically approximate density profiles from our equations. Both the numerical solutions of our reduced mean-field equations and the analytical density profiles agree well with numerical solutions of the full Gross-Pitaevskii equation while being more efficient to compute.

Dimension reduction for dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in the strong interaction regime

Weizhu Bao, Loïc Le Treust, Florian Méhats +1 more

We study dimension reduction for the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a long-range and anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction modeling dipolar Bose-Einstein condensation in a strong interaction regime. The cases of disk shaped condensates (confinement from dimension three to dimension two) and cigar shaped condensates (confinement to dimension one) are analyzed. In both cases, the analysis combines averaging tools and semiclassical techniques. Asymptotic models are derived, with rates of convergence in terms of two small dimensionless parameters characterizing the strength of the confinement and the strength of the interaction between atoms.

Thomas-Fermi versus one- and two-dimensional regimes of a trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate

Nicholas G. Parker, Duncan H J O’Dell

We derive the criteria for the Thomas-Fermi regime of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in cigar-shaped, pancake-shaped, and spherical geometries. These also naturally gives the criteria for the mean-field one- and two-dimensional regimes. Our predictions, including analytic forms for the density profiles, are shown to be in excellent agreement with numerical solutions. Importantly, the anisotropy of the interactions has a profound effect on the Thomas-Fermi and low-dimensional criteria.

Dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in cigar-shaped traps

A. M. Kamchatnov, V. S. Shchesnovich

The Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in an elongated cigar-shaped trap is reduced to an effective system of nonlinear equations depending on only one space coordinate along the trap axis. The radial distribution of the condensate density and its radial velocity are approximated by Gaussian functions with real and imaginary exponents, respectively, with parameters depending on the axial coordinate and time. The effective one-dimensional system is applied to a description of the ground state of the condensate, to dark and bright solitons, to the sound and radial compression waves propagating in a dense condensate, and to weakly nonlinear waves in repulsive condensate. In the low-density limit our results reproduce the known formulas. In the high-density case our description of solitons goes beyond the standard approach based on the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. The dispersion relations for the sound and radial compression waves are obtained in a wide region of values of the condensate density. The Korteweg--de Vries equation for weakly nonlinear waves is derived and the existence of bright solitons on a constant background is predicted for a dense enough condensate with a repulsive interaction between the atoms.

Effective mean-field equations for cigar-shaped and disk-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates

Antonio Muñoz Mateo, V. Delgado

By applying the standard adiabatic approximation and using the accurate analytical expression for the corresponding local chemical potential obtained in our previous work [Phys. Rev. A 75, 063610 (2007)] we derive an effective 1D equation that governs the axial dynamics of mean-field cigar-shaped condensates with repulsive interatomic interactions, accounting accurately for the contribution from the transverse degrees of freedom. This equation, which is more simple than previous proposals, is also more accurate. Moreover, it allows treating condensates containing an axisymmetric vortex with no additional cost. Our effective equation also has the correct limit in both the quasi-1D mean-field regime and the Thomas-Fermi regime and permits one to derive fully analytical expressions for ground-state properties such as the chemical potential, axial length, axial density profile, and local sound velocity. These analytical expressions remain valid and accurate in between the above two extreme regimes. Following the same procedure we also derive an effective 2D equation that governs the transverse dynamics of mean-field disk-shaped condensates. This equation, which also has the correct limit in both the quasi-2D and the Thomas-Fermi regime, is again more simple and accurate than previous proposals. We have checked the validity of our equations by numerically solving the full 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Effective wave equations for the dynamics of cigar-shaped and disk-shaped Bose condensates

Luca Salasnich, Alberto Parola, L. Reatto

Starting from the three-dimensional (3D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation and using a variational approach, we derive an effective 1D wave equation that describes the axial dynamics of a Bose condensate confined in an external potential with cylindrical symmetry. The trapping potential is harmonic in the transverse direction and generic in the axial one. Our equation, that is a time-dependent nonpolynomial nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (1D NPSE), can be used to model cigar-shaped condensates, whose dynamics is essentially 1D. We show that 1D NPSE gives much more accurate results than all other effective equations recently proposed. By using 1D NPSE we find analytical solutions for bright and dark solitons, which generalize the ones known in the literature. We deduce also an effective 2D nonpolynomial Schr\"odinger equation (2D NPSE) that models disk-shaped Bose condensates confined in an external trap that is harmonic along the axial direction and generic in the transverse direction. In the limiting cases of weak and strong interaction, our approach gives rise to Schr\"odinger-like equations with different polynomial nonlinearities.
