Effects of three-body interaction on dynamic and static structure factors of an optically-trapped Bose gas

Abstract

We investigate how three-body interactions affect the elementary excitations and dynamic structure factor of a Bose—Einstein condensate trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice. To this end, we numerically solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and then the corresponding Bogoliubov equations. Our results show that three-body interactions can change both the Bogoliubov band structure and the dynamical structure factor dramatically, especially in the case of the two-body interaction being relatively small. Furthermore, when the optical lattice is strong enough, the analytical results, combined with the sum-rule approach, help us to understand that: the effects of three-body interactions on the static structure factor can be significantly amplified by an optical lattice. Our predictions should be observable within the current Bragg spectroscopy experiment.

Dynamic Structure Factor of an Optically Trapped Dipolar Bose—Einstein Condensate

Wei Qi, Zhaoxin Liang, Zhang Zhi-dong

Motivated by the recent experimental achievements in using the Bragg spectroscopy to measure the excitation spectrum of an ultra-cold atomic system with long-range interactions, we investigate the dynamic structure factor of a cigar-shaped dipolar Bose condensate trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattices. Our results show that the Bogoliubov bands of the system, particularly the lowest one, can be significantly influenced when one tunes the dipole orientation. Consequently, the calculated static structure factor of an optically trapped dipolar Bose gas shows marked difference from the non-dipolar one. Moreover, we show that the effects of dipole-dipole interaction on the dynamic structure factor is also strongly affected by the strength of the optical confinement.

Modulational Instability of Dipolar Bose–Einstein Condensates in Optical Lattices with Three-Body Interactions

Wei Qi, Zi-Hao Li, Zhaoxin Liang

Motivated by the recent experiment [Nature 530 (2016) 194] in which a stable droplet in a dipolar quantum gas has been created by the interaction-induced instability, we focus on the modulation instability of an optically-trapped dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate with three-body interaction. Within the mean-field level, we analytically solve the discrete cubic-quintic Gross–Pitaevskii equation with dipole–dipole interaction loaded into a deep optical lattice and show how combined effects of the three-body interaction and dipole–dipole interaction on the condition of modulational instability. Our results show that the interplay of the three-body interaction and dipole–dipole interaction can dramatically change the modulation instability condition compared with the ordinary Gross–Pitaevskii equation. We believe that the predicted results in this work can be useful for the future possible experiment of loading a Bose–Einstein condensate of 164 Dy atoms with strong magnetic dipole–dipole interaction into an optical lattice.

Compressibility, Bloch bands and elementary excitations

Meret Krämer, S. Stringari

We discuss the Bloch-state solutions of the stationary Gross-Pitaevskii equation and of the Bogoliubov equations for a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a one-dimensional optical lattice. The results for the compressibility, effective mass and velocity of sound are analysed as a function of the lattice depth and of the strength of the two-body interaction. The band structure of the spectrum of elementary excitations is compared with the one exhibited by the stationary solutions (Bloch bands). Moreover, the numerical calculations are compared with the analytic predictions of the tight binding approximation. We also discuss the role of quantum fluctuations and show that the condensate exhibits 3D, 2D or 1D features depending on the lattice depth and on the number of particles occupying each potential well. We finally show how, using a local density approximation, our results can be applied to study the behaviour of the gas in the presence of harmonic trapping.

Dynamic structure factor of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional optical lattice

We study the effect of a one-dimensional periodic potential on the dynamic structure factor of an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature. We show that, due to phononic correlations, the excitation strength toward the first band develops a typical oscillating behavior as a function of the momentum transfer, and vanishes at even multiples of the Bragg momentum. The effects of interactions on the static structure factor are found to be significantly amplified by the presence of the optical potential. Our predictions can be tested in stimulated photon scattering experiments.

Band structure and stability of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices with two- and three-atom interactions

Ai‐Xia Zhang, Ju-Kui Xue

Energy band structure and stability of Bose-Einstein condensate with both two- and three-body interactions in one-dimensional periodic optical lattices are discussed. It is demonstrated that the lowest energy band can show a loop structure at the boundary of the first Brillouin zone only when the number of atoms is larger than a critical value. When the loop structure is excited, an analytical expression of the loop width is obtained. The energetical and dynamical stabilities of the system are determined by considering the behavior of the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional when the condensate wave function diverge away from a stationary state upon small perturbation, and its dependence on the number of atoms, the magnitude of the periodic potential, especially, the strength of the three-body force are studied. In addition, a criteria of the stability for excitations with long wavelengths is given by applying the hydrodynamic approach. The influence of the three-body interaction on the band properties and the stabilities are discussed in detail. It is shown that the critical density for developing the loop structure, the loop width, and the instability criteria are modified dramatically by the three-body interaction.

Interacting bosons in an optical lattice

Several models of a strongly interacting Bose gas in an optical lattice are studied within the functionalintegral approach. The one-dimensional Bose gas is briefly discussed. Then the Bose-Einstein condensate and the Mott insulator of a three-dimensional Bose gas are described in mean-field approximation, and the corresponding phase diagrams are evaluated. Other characteristic quantities, like the spectrum of quasiparticle excitations and the static structure factor, are obtained from Gaussian fluctuations around the mean-field solutions. We discuss the role of quantum and thermal fluctuations, and determine the behavior of physical quantities in terms of density and temperature of the Bose gas. In particular, we study the dilute limit, where the mean-field equation becomes the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. This allows us to extend the Gross-
