Quantum correlation imaging via X-ray parametric down-conversion

Justin C. Goodrich, Ryan Mahon, Joseph Hanrahan +12 more

Quantum imaging leverages correlations between pairs of photons and has the potential to obtain image information beyond what classical sources provide. Extending this approach to the X-ray regime has been limited by low photon-pair generation rates and the lack of suitable detectors. Here, we demonstrate X-ray coincidence imaging using spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) and a pixelated area detector with time- and energy-resolved capabilities. This configuration enables simultaneous detection of correlated X-ray photon pairs and coincidence-based imaging of test objects, including a biological specimen. The increased coincidence rate and spatially resolved detection establish a basis for future quantum-enhanced and low-dose X-ray imaging.

Transverse coincidence structures in spontaneous parametric down-conversion with orbital angular momentum: Theory

Geraldo A. Barbosa

Coincidence structures in the transverse plane of type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion carrying orbital angular momentum are obtained. Azimuthal symmetry breaking around the pump beam direction reveals itself on these quantum images. Analytical expressions for the amplitude probability of the down-conversion process are shown including the nonlinear polarizability components.

Purely spatial coincidences in parametric spontaneous down conversion

Jean-Luc Blanchet, F. Devaux, Luca Furfaro +1 more

Spontaneous down conversion (SPDC) occurs in a nonlinear crystal when a pump photon splits in a pair of signal and idler photons. This paper demonstrates detection of single photons in low light level images with an electron multiplying CCD camera (EMCCD). The opposite spatial fluctuations of SPDC radiation are correlated in the quantum regime. Here, correlations between pixels are presented for collinear phase matching. The far field image of the parametric fluorescence is formed in the focal plane of a lens on a back-illuminated EMCCD. A thresholding procedure is applied on each image, in order to decide whether there is one or zero photo-electron on each pixel. We have experimentally demonstrated that spatial SPDC fluctuations between opposite pixels are quantum correlated in the far field.
