Abstract

We measure the absorption and dispersion in a Doppler-broadened Λ-type three level system by resonant stimulated Raman spectroscopy with homodyne detection. Through studying the dressed state energies of the system, it is found that the absorption and dispersion satisfy the Kramers–Kronig relation. The absorption and dispersion spectra calculated by employing this relation agree well with our experimental observations.

Theory of degenerate four-wave mixing in resonant Doppler-broadened media. - II. Doppler-free heterodyne spectroscopy via collinear four-wave mixing in two- and three-level systems

M. Ducloy, Daniel Bloch

In this article, we analyse a new sensitive spectroscopic technique in which a sample cell is irradiated by a two-frequency pump beam (ω + Δ ± δ/2) and a counter-propagating probe beam (ω). The phase-conjugate fields re-emitted at frequencies ω ± δ, via four-wave mixing processes, are detected through their heterodyne beating with the probe field. The properties of the heterodyne beat signal are studied by means of a perturbation calculation of the nonlinear response of the medium, carried out to the third order in the incident fields. In resonant gas media, the emission lineshape exhibits a Doppler-free doublet structure [frequency splitting 3 δ/2 for single-photon resonances, and δ/2 for two-photon transitions]. By using a phase-sensitive detection of the beat signal, one can separately analyse real (dispersion) or imaginary parts (absorption) of the nonlinear susceptibility. For single-photon transitions, the signal phase shift is related to the atomic levels lifetime and allows one to study the relaxation dynamics in gas phase (like quenching collisions, velocity diffusion, etc...). This is particularly interesting for cross-over resonances, in which only the common level contributes. In three-level systems, one also predicts a selective resonant enhancement of the phase-conjugate emission through Raman-type two-photon processes. Most of these predictions have been experimentally verified.

Positive and negative dispersion in a three-level Λ system driven by a single pump

A. D. Wilson‐Gordon, Harry Friedmann

We extend our previous study of a nearly degenerate Λ three-level system that exhibits population trapping when driven by a single pump and produces an absorption or gain doublet in the probe absorption spectrum. In particular, we show that the probe dispersion is positive or negative between the doublet lines, and can survive Doppler broadening. For certain values of the pump Rabi frequency, the sign of the dispersion can be changed by altering the ratio of the splitting between the lower levels to the Doppler width.

Enhanced third-order nonlinear processes based on Raman resonance

Li-Ya Pei

We observe experimentally huge enhanced four-wave mixing based on Raman resonance in an 85Rb atomic vapor system. With the decrease of coupling field power or the increase of experimental temperature, the signal tends to be narrowed down in linewidth, and be basically the same spectrum as the stimulated Raman spectroscopy. It is found that the macroscopic polarization interference effect plays a crucial role in determining the nonlinear spectra. Further more, in the Doppler-broadened Λ-type energy level system, there is a strong relationship among electromagnetically induced transparency, four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman spectroscopy. The sharp transparent window in electromagnetically induced transparency can be interpreted as the suppression of Raman gain on the linear absorption of the probe field. However, the four-wave mixing signal is a new field generated by the atomic vapor system, and it comes from the Raman gain which is affected and modified by the absorption and dispersion of the nonlinear optical medium. It shows that in a Λ-type Doppler-broadened system, in essence, both the electromagnetically induced transparency and enhanced four-wave mixing stem from stimulated Raman scattering based on the third-order nonlinear processes, just the spectra of which are from different ways and objects of detection.

Observation of Intracavity Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Polariton Resonances in a Doppler-Broadened Medium

Haibin Wu, Julio R. Gea-Banacloche, Min Xiao

The transmission spectrum of three-level atoms in a vapor cell inside an optical cavity shows distinct peaks associated with atom-cavity polaritons in the system. We develop the theory of these resonances in a Doppler-broadened medium and present the results of experimental observations of these spectra in three-level Lambda-type rubidium atoms inside an optical ring cavity.

Condition for Doppler-free three-photon resonance in a ladder-type atomic system

Yoon‐Seok Lee, Han Seb Moon

We report the essential condition for three-photon electromagnetically induced absorption (TPEIA) in a Doppler-broadened ladder-type atomic system. When the two coupling lasers operate at different frequencies, we observed Doppler-free TPEIA resonance at a counterintuitive frequency, which is the almost half-frequency detuning of the frequency difference between the two coupling fields. Considering three-photon coherence in a Doppler-broadened ladder-type three-level atomic system, the TPEIA due to the atomic group of non-zero velocity was in good agreement with the calculated TPEIA spectrum under the one-photon resonance condition of all three optical fields. From the results, we found that an atomic group with a proper velocity for ladder-type TPEIA should satisfy the one-photon resonances of all three optical fields.
