Abstract

We have observed an effect of light-induced refractive index change in LiNbO3∶Fe crystal sheet, which is different from the photorefractive effect. It has the characters of faster response (<0.1s),isotropy and function of information storage. We have also discussed the physical mechanism of the effect.

Change in the refractive index of a photorefractive crystal during formation of a spatially screened soliton

S. A. Asselborn, Наталия Дмитриевна Кундикова, Igor' V Novikov

A change in the refractive index of a photorefractive barium-sodium niobate crystal in an alternating electric field during the propagation of intensity-modulated coherent radiation in it is studied. It is shown experimentally that a change in the refractive index in the soliton regime in a photorefractive crystal with a small nonlocal response is independent of the external-field amplitude and intensity-modulation depth.

Dynamics of refractive-index grating formation in a Kerr medium

Ragini Saxena, Pochi Yeh

Light-induced change in the index of refraction of a Kerr medium is well known.1 Illumination with a spatially periodic light intensity leads to the formation of an index grating in the Kerr medium. We make a comparative study of the response time and power requirement for index grating formation in photorefractive and Kerr media. We examine the conditions in which the index grating in the Kerr medium will be spatially shifted from the light intensity that induces it. Two-beam coupling via Bragg diffraction from the nonlocal index grating is studied.2 The coupling constant is found to depend on the relaxation mechanism of the atoms in the Kerr media and the frequency detunings of the two beams from the line center.

Observation of Optical Bistability in Two-Dimensional Volume Refractive Index Grating Thermally Fixed in LiNbO 3 :Fe Crystal

Zhenlin Wang, Jun Wu, Zhen-ju Yang +2 more

Experimental observation of optical bistability in a nonlinear two-dimensional volume refractive index grating is reported. The index grating in LiNbO 3 : 0.1 wt.% Fe photorefractive single crystal was fabricated by using hologram recording and subsequent thermal fixing techniques. Due to the thermal fixing, the stored 2D volume index grating shows no optical erasure during readout. An explanation of the nonlinear phenomena is also given in terms of the intensity-enhanced bulk photovoltaic effects in LiNbO 3 :Fe material.

We observed the photorefractive spatial dark-soliton stripes in LiNbO 3 :Fe crystal, and demonstrate the planar waveguide property of refractive index profile induced by these spatial dark-soliton stripes. We suggest a new mothed to form the planar waveguide utilizing the grating fixing technique.

Photorefractive induced slowdown of nanosecond light pulses in the nanosecond regime

Nacera Bouldja, A. A. Grabar, Marc Sciamanna +1 more

Recently, several works have shown that the light group velocity can be reduced using the recording of dynamic refractive index gratings in photorefractive (PR) crystals [1] , [2] , [3] . The slowdown of light is performed using optical beams wave mixing: it yields the output pulse amplification and increases the light dispersion inside the PR crystal. For example, the TWM method demonstrated that the delay time ∆ τ can be varied as a function of the TWM gain values Γ and the input pulse widths T 0 . However, several works have shown that the results achieved by this method are limited in terms of pulse duration. Indeed, only long pulses with time duration of ms−s can be slowdown in a PR crystal both at the visible and the infrared wavelengths [4] .

Experimental observation of the slowdown of optical beams by a volume-index grating in a photorefractive LiNbO_3 crystal

Shiuan Huei Lin, Ken Y. Hsu, Pochi Yeh

We investigate the group velocity of light in a one-dimensional volume-index grating inside a photorefractive LiNbO(3) crystal. The slowdown of the group electromagnetic propagation is observed experimentally by tuning of the wave number of the optical beam close to the outside edge of the forbidden bandgap. We obtain a large group index of up to 7.5 in a 3.5-cm crystal sample. The group index is compared with the result of a theoretical derivation. The results are presented and discussed.
