Abstract

While recent theoretical and experimental evidence have indicated that many commonly used superconducting weak links might have distinctly nonsinusoiual current-phase relations, precise measurement of these relations has been difficult to realize. Now a high resolution technique has been developed for the measurement of current-phase relations of weak links. This technique was used to determine the current-phase relations of various weak link structures including point contacts, thin film microbridges and proximity effect bridges. (GRA)

Properties of superconducting weak links prepared by ion implantation and by electron beam lithography

E. P. Harris, Robert B. Laibowitz

In this paper, we present our latest results on the properties of superconducting weak links prepared in Mo films by ion-implantation and in Nb films by electron-beam lithography. In the case of the ion-implanted weak links, which structurally resemble proximity-effect bridges, we find that the static properties are quite well described by a recent theory of Likharev and Yakobson. We further find that the rf response of these weak links is in excellent agreement with quasistatic resistively-shunted-junction model calculations based on a sinusoidal current-phase relation at those temperatures for which such a current-phase relation is predicted by the static theory of Likharev and Yakob-son. For the e-beam fabricated Nb bridges, which have the Dayem bridge geometry, our sample preparation techniques have allowed us to produce bridges and two-junction interferometers in which the link dimensions are as small as about 2000 Angstroms. We find that Josephson effects are observable in these bridges even when the bridge dimensions exceed the temperature-dependent coherence length by about an order of magnitude, but are still less than the effective thin-film penetration depth.

Microwave impedance of superconducting weak links

J. D. Franson, James E. Mercereau

Calibrated measurements of both the real and imaginary parts of the microwave impedance of proximity coupled superconducting weak links have been made. The measurements were compared with analytic calculations based on several different models for the supercurrent Is and quasiparticle current. For dc bias currents I1 less than the critical current Ic, the experimental results are consistent with the Josephson relation Is=Ic sinφ, where φ is the quantum phase angle. However, for I1≳Ic, the Fourier component of Is at the Josephson frequency is found to be significantly less (∼0.65±0.1) than would be predicted from Is=Ic sinφ, and consistent with Tinkham’s analysis of a phase slip process. The experimental results indicate that the phase-dependent part of the quasiparticle current, if it exists at all, is no more than 10% of the total quasiparticle current. These results do not necessarily contradict previous measurements made on true tunnel junctions because of the fundamental differences between the two types of devices.

Influence of the current-phase relationship on the I-V characteristic of superconducting weak links

I-V characteristics with and without hysteresis are calculated for various current-phase relations. We show that the shape of the current-phase relation has a significant influence on the shape of the I-V characteristic and the amount of hysteresis in it.

Proximity effect bridge and superconducting microcircuitry

Harris Notarys, James E. Mercereau

Techniques have been developed with which it is possible to fabricate superconducting thin-film structures with a wide variety of electrical and superconducting parameters which show Josephson-like phenomena. These bridges-based on the proximity effect-are made in layered thin-film ``substrates'' using a large variety of superconducting and nonsuperconducting materials. In this paper we detail the fabrication techniques and the electrical and superconducting characteristics for these proximity effect bridges including a simple low-frequency (<10 GHz) equivalent circuit based on analysis and experiment which closely describes the quantum phase coherence operation of the bridges in their voltage sustaining state. Extension of these fabrication techniques to entire thin-film electrical circuits including resistors, capacitors, and inductors with these bridges and leading to an entire superconducting microcircuit technology is discussed.
