Abstract

Based on the hydrodynamic model, gap soliton of a superfluid fermion gas in optical lattices was discussed. By using the variational method, the condition for existing gap soliton is obtained. It is found that, when the system crosses from Bose-Eingtein condensation side to the BCS side, the condition for existing gap soliton and the structure of gap soliton are very different.

Gap solitons in superfluid boson-fermion mixtures

Sadhan K. Adhikari, Boris A. Malomed

Using coupled equations for the bosonic and fermionic order parameters, we construct families of gap solitons (GSs) in a nearly one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture trapped in a periodic optical-lattice (OL) potential, the boson and fermion components being in the states of the Bose-Einstein condensation and Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superfluid, respectively. Fundamental GSs are compact states trapped, essentially, in a single cell of the lattice. Full families of such solutions are constructed in the first two band gaps of the OL-induced spectrum, by means of variational and numerical methods, which are found to be in good agreement. The families include both intragap and intergap solitons, with the chemical potentials of the boson and fermion components falling in the same or different band gaps, respectively. Nonfundamental states, extended over several lattice cells, are constructed too. The GSs are stable against strong perturbations.

Tightly bound gap solitons in a Fermi gas

Sadhan K. Adhikari, Boris A. Malomed

Within the framework of the mean-field hydrodynamic model of a degenerate Fermi gas (DFG), we study, by means of numerical methods and variational approximation (VA), the formation of fundamental gap solitons (FGSs) in a DFG (or in a BCS superfluid generated by weak interaction between spin-up and spin-down fermions), which is trapped in a periodic optical-lattice (OL) potential. An effectively one-dimensional (1D) configuration is considered, assuming strong transverse confinement; in parallel, a proper 1D model of the DFG (which amounts to the known quintic equation for the Tonks-Girardeau gas in the OL) is considered too. The FGSs found in the first two bandgaps of the OL-induced spectrum (unless they are very close to edges of the gaps) feature a ( tightly bound ) shape, being essentially confined to a single cell of the OL. In the second bandgap, we also find antisymmetric tightly bound subfundamental solitons (SFSs), with zero at the midpoint. The SFSs are also confined to a single cell of the OL, but, unlike the FGSs, they are unstable. The predicted solitons, consisting of ∼10 4 –10 5 atoms, can be created by available experimental techniques in the DFG of 6 Li atoms.

Solitons in a superfluid Fermi gas

Mauro Antezza

We will discuss recent results on the theoretical and experimental investigations on solitons in a superfluid Fermi gas along the BCS-BEC crossover. On the theory side, by solving the Bogoliubov de Gennes equations and looking for real and odd solutions for the order parameter, it has been shown that a dark soliton at unitarity posses a large density contrast and fermionic bound states. The superfluid gap is found to be significantly quenched by the presence of the soliton due to the occurrence of Andreev fermionic bound states localized near the nodal plane of the order parameter. By solving the time dependent Bogoliubov de Gennes equations, also the decay and collisions of dark solitons has been investigated. Recently, a cascade of Solitonic Excitations in a Superfluid Fermi gas has been experimentally observed.

The ground state solutions of superfluid Fermi gas in optical lattices

Bai Xiao-Dong, Liu Rui-Han, Lu Liu +2 more

The ground state solutions of superfluid Fermi gas in optical lattices are studied by means of the balance condition between the lattices potential and inter-atomic interaction energy. We derive the atoms density distribution, the atoms number and the energy of the ground state along the entire BEC-BCS crossover. It is shown that, the properties of the ground state present very different characters as the system transits from the BEC side to the BCS side.

Ground-State Properties of Superfluid Fermi Gas in Fourier-Synthesized Optical Lattices

Yan Chen, Kezhi Zhang, Xiaoliang Wang +1 more

By employing the balance condition between the lattice potential and the interatomic interaction, we study the ground state solutions of superfluid Fermi gases in Fourier-synthesized (FS) optical lattices. The average energy of the ground state, the atoms number, and the atom density distribution of the Fermi system are analytically derived along the Bose—Einstein condensation (BEC) side to the Bardeen—Cooper—Schrieffer (BCS) side. We analyze the properties of ground state solutions at both the BEC limit and unitarity in FS optical lattices. It is found that the relative phase α between the two lattice harmonics impacts greatly on the properties of the ground state of the superfluid Fermi gas. Especially in the BCS limit, when α = π/2, the average energy presents an exponential form with the increase of the potential depth of the lattice harmonics υ 2 . Meanwhile, there exits a minimal value. Moreover, due to the Fermi pressure, the atom density distribution at unitarity is more outstretched than that in the BEC limit. The average energy at unitarity is apparently larger than that in the BEC limit. The properties of the ground state solution exhibit very different behaviors when the system transits from the BEC side to the BCS side.

Superfluid Fermi Gas in Optical Lattices: Self-Trapping, Stable, Moving Solitons and Breathers

Ju-Kui Xue, Ai‐Xia Zhang

We predict the existence of self-trapping, stable, moving solitons and breathers of Fermi wave packets along the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC)-BCS crossover in one dimension (1D), 2D, and 3D optical lattices. The dynamical phase diagrams for self-trapping, solitons, and breathers of the Fermi matter waves along the BEC-BCS crossover are presented analytically and verified numerically by directly solving a discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We find that the phase diagrams vary greatly along the BEC-BCS crossover; the dynamics of Fermi wave packet are different from that of Bose wave packet.
