Superfluid Fermi Gas in Optical Lattices: Self-Trapping, Stable, Moving Solitons and Breathers

Abstract

We predict the existence of self-trapping, stable, moving solitons and breathers of Fermi wave packets along the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC)-BCS crossover in one dimension (1D), 2D, and 3D optical lattices. The dynamical phase diagrams for self-trapping, solitons, and breathers of the Fermi matter waves along the BEC-BCS crossover are presented analytically and verified numerically by directly solving a discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We find that the phase diagrams vary greatly along the BEC-BCS crossover; the dynamics of Fermi wave packet are different from that of Bose wave packet.

Self-trapping of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices: The effect of the lattice dimension

Ju-Kui Xue, Ai‐Xia Zhang, Jie Liu

In the present paper, we analytically and numerically investigate the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) loaded into deep optical lattices of one dimension (1D), 2D, and 3D. We focus on the self-trapped state and the effect of the lattice dimension. Under the tight-binding approximation, we obtain an analytical criterion for the self-trapped state of BEC using the time-dependent variational method. The phase diagram for self-trapping, soliton, breather, or diffusion of a BEC cloud is obtained accordingly and verified by directly solving a discrete Gross-Pitaevskii equation numerically. In particular, we find that the criterion and the phase diagrams are modified dramatically by the dimension of the optical lattices.

Dynamical phase diagram of Gaussian wave packets in optical lattices

H. Hennig, T. Neff, Ragnar Fleischmann

We study the dynamics of self-trapping in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) loaded in deep optical lattices with Gaussian initial conditions, when the dynamics is well described by the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation (DNLSE). In the literature an approximate dynamical phase diagram based on a variational approach was introduced to distinguish different dynamical regimes: diffusion, self-trapping, and moving breathers. However, we find that the actual DNLSE dynamics shows a completely different diagram than the variational prediction. We calculate numerically a detailed dynamical phase diagram accurately describing the different dynamical regimes. It exhibits a complex structure that can readily be tested in current experiments in BECs in optical lattices and in optical waveguide arrays. Moreover, we derive an explicit theoretical estimate for the transition to self-trapping in excellent agreement with our numerical findings, which may be a valuable guide as well for future studies on a quantum dynamical phase diagram based on the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian.

Sound waves and dynamics of superfluid Fermi gases in optical lattices

Ai‐Xia Zhang, Ju-Kui Xue

The sound waves, the stability of Bloch waves, the Bloch oscillation, and the self-trapping phenomenon in interacting two-component Fermi gases throughout the BEC-BCS crossover in one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D), and three-dimensional (3D) optical lattices are discussed in detail. Within the hydrodynamical theory and by using the perturbative and tight-binding approximation, sound speed in both weak and tight 1D, 2D, 3D optical lattices, and the criteria for occurrences of instability of Bloch waves and self-trapping of Fermi gases along the whole BEC-BCS crossover in tight 1D, 2D, 3D optical lattices are obtained analytically. The results show that the sound speed, the criteria for occurrences of instability of Bloch waves and self-trapping, and the destruction of Bloch oscillation are modified dramatically by the lattice parameters (lattice dimension and lattice strength), the atom density or atom number, and the atom interaction.

Dissipative dynamics of matter-wave solitons in a nonlinear optical lattice

F. Kh. Abdullaev, A. Gammal, H. L. F. da Luz +1 more

Dynamics and stability of solitons in two-dimensional (2D) Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC), with one-dimensional (1D) conservative plus dissipative nonlinear optical lattices, are investigated. In the case of focusing media (with attractive atomic systems), the collapse of the wave packet is arrested by the dissipative periodic nonlinearity. The adiabatic variation of the background scattering length leads to metastable matter-wave solitons. When the atom feeding mechanism is used, a dissipative soliton can exist in focusing 2D media with 1D periodic nonlinearity. In the defocusing media (repulsive BEC case) with harmonic trap in one direction and nonlinear optical lattice in the other direction, the stable soliton can exist. Variational approach simulations are confirmed by full numerical results for the 2D Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Dynamics of dark solitons in superfluid Fermi gases in the BCS-BEC crossover

Wen Wen, Guoxiang Huang

We study, both analytically and numerically, the formation and propagation of dark solitons in a superfluid Fermi gas in the crossover from Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Starting from a superfluid order-parameter equation, we derive a Korteweg--de Vries equation for weak nonlinear excitations under quasi-one-dimensional and long-wavelength approximations. We present dark soliton solutions valid for both BCS and BEC limits and also for the crossover, and show that dark solitons in different superfluid regimes possess different features. Particularly, a dark soliton in the BCS (BEC) regime has larger (smaller) propagating velocity and smaller (larger) spatial width. Upon moving to the boundary of the condensate, it generally decelerates and generates small radiations, which display different behavior in different superfluid regimes. We study also a head-on collision between two dark solitons and demonstrate that the phase shift due to the collision changes nonmonotonically along the BCS-BEC crossover. All analytical results are checked by numerical simulations, and good agreement between them is found.

Two-component Bose-Einstein condensates in D -dimensional optical lattices

Jianjun Wang, Ai‐Xia Zhang, Kezhi Zhang +2 more

The impurity-induced self-trapping and stable moving soliton and breather of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC's) in deep $D$-dimensional optical lattices are discussed both analytically and numerically. Under the tight-binding approximation and within a time-dependent variational approach, analytical criteria for occurrences of a self-trapping, moving soliton and breather in the system are obtained. The analytical results are confirmed by direct numerical simulation. It is shown that the dynamics of the condensates can be modified significantly by a minor admixture of an impurity (the second component). The diffusion state of the single-component BEC will transit to the self-trapped state due to the minor admixture of an impurity, even if the two condensates are only with marginal spatial overlap. Furthermore, we find that, in certain conditions, a stable moving soliton can exist in high-dimensional lattices for the two-component BEC's, which is very different from the single-component BEC (where a moving soliton cannot be stabilized in high-dimensional lattices). On the other hand, the impurity can play a crucial role in causing important coherence-decoherence and localization-delocalization phase transitions.
