Solitons in a superfluid Fermi gas

Abstract

We will discuss recent results on the theoretical and experimental investigations on solitons in a superfluid Fermi gas along the BCS-BEC crossover. On the theory side, by solving the Bogoliubov de Gennes equations and looking for real and odd solutions for the order parameter, it has been shown that a dark soliton at unitarity posses a large density contrast and fermionic bound states. The superfluid gap is found to be significantly quenched by the presence of the soliton due to the occurrence of Andreev fermionic bound states localized near the nodal plane of the order parameter. By solving the time dependent Bogoliubov de Gennes equations, also the decay and collisions of dark solitons has been investigated. Recently, a cascade of Solitonic Excitations in a Superfluid Fermi gas has been experimentally observed.

We investigate the behavior of dark solitons in a superfluid Fermi gas along the BCS-BEC crossover by solving the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations and looking for real and odd solutions for the order parameter. We show that in the resonance unitary region, where the scattering length is large, the density profile of the soliton has a deep minimum, differently from what happens in the BCS regime. The superfluid gap is found to be significantly quenched by the presence of the soliton due to the occurrence of Andreev fermionic bound states localized near the nodal plane of the order parameter.

Dynamics of Dark Solitons in a Trapped Superfluid Fermi Gas

R. G. Scott, F. Dalfovo, Лев П. Питаевский +1 more

We study soliton oscillations in a trapped superfluid Fermi gas across the Bose-Einstein condensate to Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BEC-BCS) crossover. We derive an exact equation for the oscillation period in terms of observable quantities, which we confirm by solving the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. Hence we reveal the appearance and dynamics of solitons across the crossover, and show that the period dramatically increases as the soliton becomes shallower on the BCS side of the resonance. Finally, we propose an experimental protocol to test our predictions.

The decay and collisions of dark solitons in superfluid Fermi gases

R G Scott, F Dalfovo, L P Pitaevskii +4 more

We study soliton collisions and the decay of solitons into sound in superfluid Fermi gases across the Bose–Einstein condensate to Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BEC–BCS) crossover by performing numerical simulations of the time-dependent Bogoliubov–de Gennes equations. This decay process occurs when the solitons are accelerated to the bulk pair-breaking speed by an external potential. A similar decay process may occur when solitons are accelerated by an inelastic collision with another soliton. We find that soliton collisions become increasingly inelastic as we move from the BEC to the BCS regime, and the excess energy is converted into sound. We interpret this effect as being due to the evolution of Andreev bound states localized within the soliton.

Traveling dark solitons in superfluid Fermi gases

Renyuan Liao, Joachim Brand

Families of dark solitons exist in superfluid Fermi gases. The energy-velocity dispersion and number of depleted particles completely determine the dynamics of dark solitons on a slowly varying background density. For the unitary Fermi gas, we determine these relations from general scaling arguments and conservation of local particle number. We find solitons to oscillate sinusoidally at the trap frequency reduced by a factor of $1/\sqrt{3}$. Numerical integration of the time-dependent Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation determines spatial profiles and soliton-dispersion relations across the BEC-BCS crossover, and proves consistent with the scaling relations at unitarity.

Finite-temperature effective field theory for dark solitons in superfluid Fermi gases

Serghei N. Klimin, Jacques Tempere, J. T. Devreese

We use a finite-temperature effective field theory recently developed for superfluid Fermi gases to investigate the properties of dark solitons in these superfluids. Our approach provides an analytic solution for the dip in the order parameter and the phase profile across the soliton, which can be compared with results obtained in the framework of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations. We present results in the whole range of the BCS-BEC crossover, for arbitrary temperatures and taking into account Gaussian fluctuations about the saddle point. The obtained analytic solutions yield an exact energy-momentum relation for a dark soliton showing that the soliton in a Fermi gas behaves like a classical particle even at nonzero temperatures. The spatial profile of the pair field and for the parameters of state for the soliton are analytically studied.

Gray solitons in a strongly interacting superfluid Fermi gas

Andrea Spuntarelli, Lincoln D. Carr, P. Pieri +1 more

The Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) crossover problem is solved for stationary gray solitons via the Boguliubov–de Gennes equations at zero temperature. These crossover solitons exhibit a localized notch in the gap and a characteristic phase difference across the notch for all interaction strengths, from BEC to BCS regimes. However, they do not follow the well-known Josephson-like sinusoidal relationship between velocity and phase difference except in the far BEC limit: at unitarity, the velocity has a nearly linear dependence on phase difference over an extended range. For a fixed phase difference, the soliton is of nearly constant depth from the BEC limit to unitarity and then grows progressively shallower into the BCS limit, and on the BCS side, Friedel oscillations are apparent in both gap amplitude and phase. The crossover soliton appears fundamentally in the gap; we show, however, that the density closely follows the gap, and the soliton is therefore observable. We develop an approximate power-law relationship to express this fact: the density of gray crossover solitons varies as the square of the gap amplitude in the BEC limit and as a power of about 1.5 at unitarity.
