Abstract

We study soliton collisions and the decay of solitons into sound in superfluid Fermi gases across the Bose–Einstein condensate to Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BEC–BCS) crossover by performing numerical simulations of the time-dependent Bogoliubov–de Gennes equations. This decay process occurs when the solitons are accelerated to the bulk pair-breaking speed by an external potential. A similar decay process may occur when solitons are accelerated by an inelastic collision with another soliton. We find that soliton collisions become increasingly inelastic as we move from the BEC to the BCS regime, and the excess energy is converted into sound. We interpret this effect as being due to the evolution of Andreev bound states localized within the soliton.

Dynamics of Dark Solitons in a Trapped Superfluid Fermi Gas

R. G. Scott, F. Dalfovo, Лев П. Питаевский +1 more

We study soliton oscillations in a trapped superfluid Fermi gas across the Bose-Einstein condensate to Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BEC-BCS) crossover. We derive an exact equation for the oscillation period in terms of observable quantities, which we confirm by solving the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. Hence we reveal the appearance and dynamics of solitons across the crossover, and show that the period dramatically increases as the soliton becomes shallower on the BCS side of the resonance. Finally, we propose an experimental protocol to test our predictions.

Dynamics of dark solitons in superfluid Fermi gases in the BCS-BEC crossover

Wen Wen, Guoxiang Huang

We study, both analytically and numerically, the formation and propagation of dark solitons in a superfluid Fermi gas in the crossover from Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Starting from a superfluid order-parameter equation, we derive a Korteweg--de Vries equation for weak nonlinear excitations under quasi-one-dimensional and long-wavelength approximations. We present dark soliton solutions valid for both BCS and BEC limits and also for the crossover, and show that dark solitons in different superfluid regimes possess different features. Particularly, a dark soliton in the BCS (BEC) regime has larger (smaller) propagating velocity and smaller (larger) spatial width. Upon moving to the boundary of the condensate, it generally decelerates and generates small radiations, which display different behavior in different superfluid regimes. We study also a head-on collision between two dark solitons and demonstrate that the phase shift due to the collision changes nonmonotonically along the BCS-BEC crossover. All analytical results are checked by numerical simulations, and good agreement between them is found.

Solitons in a superfluid Fermi gas

Mauro Antezza

We will discuss recent results on the theoretical and experimental investigations on solitons in a superfluid Fermi gas along the BCS-BEC crossover. On the theory side, by solving the Bogoliubov de Gennes equations and looking for real and odd solutions for the order parameter, it has been shown that a dark soliton at unitarity posses a large density contrast and fermionic bound states. The superfluid gap is found to be significantly quenched by the presence of the soliton due to the occurrence of Andreev fermionic bound states localized near the nodal plane of the order parameter. By solving the time dependent Bogoliubov de Gennes equations, also the decay and collisions of dark solitons has been investigated. Recently, a cascade of Solitonic Excitations in a Superfluid Fermi gas has been experimentally observed.

Dark soliton collisions in superfluid Fermi gases

Wout Van Alphen, G Lombardi, S N Klimin +1 more

In this work dark soliton collisions in a one-dimensional superfluid Fermi gas are studied across the BEC-BCS crossover by means of a recently developed finite-temperature effective field theory (2015 Eur. Phys. J. B 88 122). The evolution of two counter-propagating solitons is simulated numerically based on the theory’s nonlinear equation of motion for the pair field. The resulting collisions are observed to introduce a spatial shift into the trajectories of the solitons. The magnitude of this shift is calculated and studied in different conditions of temperature and spin-imbalance. When moving away from the BEC-regime, the collisions are found to become inelastic, emitting the lost energy in the form of small-amplitude density oscillations. This inelasticity is quantified and its behavior analyzed and compared to the results of other works. The dispersion relation of the density oscillations is calculated and is demonstrated to show a good agreement with the spectrum of collective excitations of the superfluid.

Propagation of sound and supersonic bright solitons in superfluid Fermi gases in BCS-BEC crossover

Wen Wen, Shun-Qing Shen, Guoxiang Huang

We investigate the linear and nonlinear sound propagations in a cigar-shaped superfluid Fermi gas with a large particle number. We first solve analytically the eigenvalue problem of linear collective excitations and provide explicit expressions of all eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, which are valid for all superfluid regimes in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-Bose-Einstein condensation (BCS-BEC) crossover. The linear sound speed obtained agrees well with that of a recent experimental measurement. We then consider a weak nonlinear excitation and show that the time evolution of the excitation obeys a Korteweg de Vries equation. Different from the result obtained in quasi-one-dimensional case studied previously, where subsonic dark solitons are obtained via the balance between quantum pressure and nonlinear effect, we demonstrate that bright solitons with supersonic propagating velocity can be generated in the present three-dimensional system through the balance between a waveguidelike dispersion and the interparticle interaction. The supersonic bright solitons obtained display different physical properties in different superfluid regimes and hence can be used to characterize superfluid features of the BCS-BEC crossover.

Snake instability of dark solitons in fermionic superfluids

Alberto Cetoli, Joachim Brand, R. G. Scott +2 more

We present numerical calculations of the snake instability in a Fermi superfluid within the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory of the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to BCS crossover using the random-phase approximation complemented by time-dependent simulations. We examine the snaking behavior across the crossover and quantify the time scale and length scale of the instability. While the dynamics shows extensive snaking before eventually producing vortices and sound on the BEC side of the crossover, the snaking dynamics is preempted by decay into sound due to pair breaking in the deep BCS regime. At the unitarity limit, hydrodynamic arguments allow us to link the rate of snaking to the experimentally observable ratio of inertial to physical mass of the soliton. In this limit we witness an unresolved discrepancy between our numerical estimates for the critical wave number of suppression of the snake instability and recent experimental observations with an ultracold Fermi gas.
