Abstract

By using an Ar + ion laser, a tunable Rh 6 G dye laser (linewidth 0.5 cm −1 ) pumped by the second harmonic of a YAG:Nd laser and a Coherent 899-21 dye laser as light sources and using a monochromator, a phase-locking amplifier and a computer as the data detecting system, we detect the optical properties of Eu 3+ -doped Y 2 SiO 5 crystal. Persistent spectral hole burning (PSHB) are observed in the Eu 3+ ions spectral lines ( 5 D 0 − 7 F 0 transition) in the crystal at the temperature of 16 K. For 15 mW dye laser burning the crystal for 0.1 s spectral holes with hole width about 80 MHz both at 579.62 nm and at 579.82 nm are detected and the holes can remain for a long time, more than 10 h.

Converting Eu^3+ between defect sites in BaFCl for persistent spectral hole burning

Songfeng Li, G. K. Liu, Wei Zhao

Persistent spectral hole burning (PSHB) is demonstrated in the (7)F(0)-->(5)D(0) optical transition of Eu(3+) doped into crystals of BaFCl. For Eu(3+) ions at two different lattice sites, persistent holes can be burned at temperatures below 77 K. The characteristics of the hole-burning process suggest that the observed PSHB effect is due to laser-excitation-induced site-to-site conversion. One type of Eu(3+) site is converted into another type of defect site. This process is not optically reversible, and holes can be erased only when the temperature increases to 150 K.

Spectrally Narrow, Long-Term Stable Optical Frequency Reference Based on a Eu3+∶Y2SiO5 Crystal at Cryogenic Temperature

Qunfeng Chen, Andrei Troshyn, Ingo Ernsting +4 more

Using an ultrastable continuous-wave laser at 580 nm we performed spectral hole burning of Eu(3+):Y(2)SiO(5) at a very high spectral resolution. The essential parameters determining the usefulness as a macroscopic frequency reference, linewidth, temperature sensitivity, and long-term stability, were characterized using a H-maser stabilized frequency comb. Spectral holes with a linewidth as low as 6 kHz were observed and the upper limit of the drift of the hole frequency was determined to be 5±3 mHz/s. We discuss the necessary requirements for achieving ultrahigh stability in laser frequency stabilization to these spectral holes.

Laser Hole Burning Spectroscopy: A High Resolution Probe of Molecular Environments.

R. M. Macfarlane, Robert M. Shelby

Laser induced hole burning in optical absorption bands of low temperature solids has been investigated with emphasis on mechanisms for population hole burning, the interactions with the environment which limit the hole widths and the use of hole burning for ultra high resolution spectroscopy. Hole burning was observed in a wide range of solids including organic and organometallic molecules in crystals and rare earth ions in crystals and glasses. The mechanisms for hole burning also varied widely and a new mechanism involving optically induced nuclear spin flips of near neighbor nuclei was discovered. Examples of hole burning in new classes of materials are presented here for the first time, namely inorganic glasses (silicate glasses containing Nd(3+), Pr(3+) or Eu(3+)) and undoped stoichiometric compounds (e.g., EuP5O14). Hole recovery was used to determine nuclear spin lattice relaxation rates in praseodymium doped crystals. For allowed optical transitions (e.g., singlet states of zinc porphyrin, dibromoindigo and color centers in alkali halides) the hole widths at 2K are limited by population decay to approximately 50 MHz. For longer lived optical levels in crystalline materials, e.g., those containing rare earth ions, the hole widths are narrower (less than 10 MHz) and are limited by dynamical interactions with surrounding nuclei. In amorphous materials such as europium doped silicate glass, hole widths are much broader, being limited by low frequency tunneling motions. Hole burning measurements were complemented by time domain coherent transient (photon echo, and optical free decay) measurements of homogeneous linewidths which enabled us to measure optical resonances as narrow as 760 Hz in Eu(3+):Y2O3.

Room temperature spectral hole burning observed in Sm-doped mixed crystals

Zhiqiang Jin, B.Y. Yu, Hyun Sook Bae +4 more

For next generation high density optical storage, extensive studies on persistent spectral hole burning (PSHB) have been performed, because they have a large potential for a high density frequency-domain optical data storage. PSHB has been observed at room temperature in Sm-doped crystals and glasses. Among them, glasses are considered to be more favorable than single crystals, due to their wide inhomogeneous line width and easy process for mass production. In the study, we developed a new glass mixture which shows room temperature PSHB with a inhomogeneous line width broadened up to 70 cm/sup -1/. The PSHB was characterized by investigating the time decay pattern of fluorescence and the excitation spectra.
