Quantum frequency up-conversion with a cavity

Abstract

The quantum state transfer from subharmonic frequency to harmonic frequency based on asymmetrically pumped second harmonic generation in a cavity is investigated theoretically. The performance of noise-free frequency up-conversion is evaluated by the signal transfer coefficient and the conversion efficiency, in which both the quadrature fluctuation and the average photon number are taken into consideration. It is shown that the quantum property can be preserved during frequency up-conversion via operating the cavity far below the threshold. The dependences of the transfer coefficient and the conversion efficiency on pump parameter, analysing frequency, and cavity extra loss are also discussed.

Quantum state transfer in frequency down-conversion via nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier

Yunfei Bai, Junxiang Zhang, Shi-Yao Zhu

By utilizing the nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier, the quantum state transfer from a pump state with high frequency to a signal state of lower frequency is studied theoretically. The noiseless state transfer is characterized by frequency conversion efficiency and noise figure. It is shown that the quantum state can be well preserved during the frequency conversion as long as the optical parametric amplifier is operated far below the threshold, and meanwhile injected with an input idler field with a power density about ten times greater than that of the pump. The dependence of the noise figure and conversion efficiency on the idler amplitude, the analyzing frequency and the cavity extra loss is also discussed.

Noise-free frequency conversion of quantum states

Yunfei Bai, Shuqin Zhai, Jiangrui Gao +1 more

In this paper, the frequency conversion of quantum states based on the intracavity nonlinear interaction is proposed. The fidelity of an input state after frequency conversion is calculated, and it is shown the noise-free frequency conversion of a quantum state can be achieved by injecting a strong signal field. The dependences of conversion efficiency on the pump parameter, extra losses and input state amplitude are also analysed.

Quantum frequency doubling based on tripartite entanglement with cavities

Juan Guo, Zhi-Feng Wei, Suying Zhang

We analyze the entanglement characteristics of three harmonic modes, which are the output fields from three cavities with an input tripartite entangled state at fundamental frequency. The entanglement properties of the input beams can be maintained after their frequencies have been up-converted by the process of second harmonic generation. We have calculated the parametric dependences of the correlation spectrum on the initial squeezing factor, the pump power, the transmission coefficient, and the normalized analysis frequency of cavity. The numerical results provide references to choose proper experimental parameters for designing the experiment. The frequency conversion of the multipartite entangled state can also be applied to a quantum communication network.

Low-noise quantum frequency conversion with cavity enhancement of converted mode

Shoichi Murakami, Toshiki Kobayashi, Shigehito Miki +7 more

Quantum frequency conversion (QFC) which converts the frequencies of photons while preserving the quantum state is an essential technology for realizing the quantum internet and quantum interconnect. For the QFC based on the frequency downconversion from visible to the telecom wavelengths around 1500 nm, it is widely known that noise photons produced by the strong pump light used for QFC contaminate the frequency-converted photon, which degrades the quality of the quantum property of the photon after QFC. In conventional QFC experiments, noise photons are removed using external narrowband frequency filter systems. In contrast, in this study, we implement a compact QFC device integrating the cavity structure only for the converted mode. While the cavity structure can enhance not only the desired QFC efficiency but also the noise photon generation rate, we show that the cavity-enhanced QFC followed by a relatively wide bandpass filter achieves the signal-to-noise ratio comparable to the QFCs with external narrowband filters. We experimentally demonstrate the cavity-enhanced QFC using a single photon at 780 nm to 1540 nm, in which the non-classical photon statistics is clearly observed after QFC.

Entanglement characteristics of subharmonic modes reflected from a cavity for type-II second-harmonic generation

Zehui Zhai, Yongming Li, Jiangrui Gao

Quantum fluctuation and quantum entanglement of the pump fields reflected from an optical cavity for type-II second-harmonic generation are theoretically analyzed. The correlation spectra of quadrature components between the reflected subharmonic fields are interpreted in terms of pump parameter, intracavity losses, and normalized frequency. High correlation of both amplitude and phase quadratures can be accessed in a triple resonant cavity before the pitchfork bifurcation occurs. The two reflected subharmonic fields are in an entangled state with quantum correlation of phase quadratures and anticorrelation of amplitude quadratures. The proposed system can be exploited as a source for generating entangled states of continuous variables.

Tripartite entanglement and threshold properties of coupled intracavity down-conversion and sum-frequency generation

C. Pennarun, Ashton S. Bradley, M. K. Olsen

The process of cascaded down-conversion and sum-frequency generation inside an optical cavity has been predicted to be a potential source of three-mode continuous-variable entanglement. When the cavity is pumped by two fields, the threshold properties have been analyzed, showing that these are more complicated than in well-known processes such as optical parametric oscillation. When there is only a single pumping field, the entanglement properties have been calculated using a linearized fluctuation analysis, but without any consideration of the threshold properties or critical operating points of the system. In this work we extend this analysis to demonstrate that the singly pumped system demonstrates a rich range of threshold behavior when quantization of the pump field is taken into account and that asymmetric polychromatic entanglement is available over a wide range of operational parameters.
