Two-photon resonant nondegenerate four-wave mixing via quantum interference

Sun Jiang, Zuo Zhan-Chun, Xin Mi +4 more

We study the quantum interference in two-photon resonant nondegenerate four-wave mixing (NFWM) in a dressed cascade four-level system in which the two upper levels are coupled by a strong laser field. We find that in the presence of a strong coupling field, two-photon resonant NFWM spectrum exhibits Autler-Townes splitting, which reflects the levels of the dressed states. It also leads to either suppression or enhancement of the NFWM signal. This scheme involves the resonant three-photon excitation, therefore, provides a new spectroscopic tool for studying highly excited atomic states with high sensitivity.

Highly nondegenerate four-wave mixing in semiconductor lasers due to spectral hole burning

Govind Prasad Agrawal

Spectral hole burning in semiconductor lasers manifests as a nonlinear suppression of the mode gain by a few percent. In the presence of a probe wave, the same mechanism can lead to highly nondegenerate four-wave mixing (NDFWM) by creating the dynamic gain and index gratings at the beat frequency of the pump and probe waves. Since the grating efficiency is governed by the intraband relaxation time (typically <1 ps), significant NDFWM can occur even for a pump-probe detuning ∼100 GHz. We present the results for the conjugate reflectivity and the probe transmittivity when an InGaAsP laser is used as a traveling-wave amplifier.
