Observation of Modulation Transfer Spectroscopy in the Deep Modulation Regime

Abstract

We observe the modulation transfer spectroscopy on the D2 line of 87Rb in a rubidium cell with acoustic-optic modulator in the deep modulation regime. In this regime, the sidebands of the pump beam are involved in the four-wave mixing processes, which increase the signal gradients and the peak-to-peak amplitudes of both the absorption and dispersion components.

Modulation transfer spectroscopy in atomic rubidium

Daniel McCarron, S. A. King, Simon L. Cornish

We report modulation transfer spectroscopy on the D2 transitions in 85 Rb and 87 Rb using a simple home-built electro-optic modulator (EOM). We show that both the gradient and amplitude of modulation transfer spectroscopy signals, for the 87 Rb F = 2 → F ' = 3 and the 85 Rb F = 3 → F ' = 4 transitions, can be significantly enhanced by expanding the beams, improving the signals for laser frequency stabilization. The signal gradient for these transitions is increased by a factor of 3 and the peak to peak amplitude was increased by a factor of 2. The modulation transfer signal for the 85 Rb F = 2 → F ' transitions is also presented to highlight how this technique can generate a single, clear line for laser frequency stabilization even in cases where there are a number of closely spaced hyperfine transitions.

Characteristics of absorption and dispersion for rubidium D2 lines with the modulation transfer spectrum

Jing Zhang, Dong Wei, Changde Xie +1 more

Absorption and dispersion signals of D2 lines of rubidium atoms in a vapor cell have been experimentally investigated with the modulation transfer spectrum (MTS). Normal dispersion was observed at the transitions of Fg ? Fe = Fg - 1 and Fg ? Fe = Fg; anomalous dispersion, at transitions of Fg ?Fe = Fg + 1; and crossover resonance, by the transitions of Fg ?Fe = Fg - 1 and Fg ? Fe = Fg. The signal lineshape of the MTS and the detector phase are addressed accurately.

Optical pumping effect on modulation transfer spectroscopy of the D1 line of ⁸⁵Rb atoms with non-cycling transition

Jin‐Tae Kim, Shabraz Khan, Heung‐Ryoul Noh

The D_1 line of ^{85}Rb exhibits non-cycling transitions; therefore, only weak modulation transfer spectroscopy (MTS) signals could be obtained \cite{Khan2024}. In this study, however, strong MTS spectra were obtained for the D_1 line via optical pumping (OP) of the D_2 line of $^{85}$Rb. Four linear parallel (lin \parallel lin) and linear perpendicular (lin\perplin), \sigma^+ - \sigma^+, and \sigma^+ - \sigma^- polarization configurations were investigated using an OP laser with four different polarizations such as linear horizontal (P), linear vertical (S), \sigma^+, and \sigma^- polarizations. Under the linear perpendicular configuration, the MTS signal for the F_g=3 \rightarrow F_e=2 transition of the D_1 line exhibited approximately a 41-fold increase in the signal slope in the presence of a linearly-polarized OP beam, compared with the signal slope obtained without OP. The calculated MTS spectra for the \sigma^+ \sigma^- configuration in the presence of \sigma^+- or \sigma^--polarized OP beam as an example matched well with experimental observations.

When a frequency-modulated pump beam overlaps with a probe beam, new modulated probe beams are generated via nonlinear interaction with atoms. We observed this phenomenon for D2line of87Rb and compared with calculated results.
