For the coherently controlled single-atom memory cell, a two-level atom with the transition frequency inside the gap and close to the gap edge is suggested. The atom-photon bound state (APBS) can be extensively controlled via available reservoir modes of unspoiled photonic crystal.

In-reservoir coherent control of an atom-photon bound state

In this work we show that the atom-photon bound state (APBS) in zero-temperature structured reservoir without an external excitation is always an entangled state of two qubits. The maximal degree of achievable entanglement depends on the atomic frequency detuning from the band edge. APBS can be produced and effectively controlled by the coherent excitation of the reservoir modes with frequencies outside the gap. The proposed scheme can be used for the single-atom optical memory device.

Control of spontaneous emission from a microwave-field-coupled three-level Λ -type atom in photonic crystals

Xiangqian Jiang, B. Zhang, Zhenzhong Lu +1 more

The spontaneous emission spectrum of a three-level $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type atom driven by a microwave field was studied. For the two transitions coupled to the same modified reservoir, we discussed the influence of photonic band gap and Rabi frequency of the microwave field on the emission spectrum. The emission spectrum is given for different locations of the upper band-edge frequency. With the transition frequencies moving from outside the band gap to inside, the number of peaks decreases in the emission spectrum and the multipeak structure of spectral line is finally replaced by a strong non-Lorentzian shape. With increase of the Rabi frequency of the microwave field, we find the spectral line changes from a multipeak structure to a two-peak structure, originating from the inhibition of spontaneous emission for the corresponding decay channel.

Dissipation control in cavity QED with oscillating mode structures

I. E. Linington, B. M. Garraway

We demonstrate how a time-dependent dissipative environment may be used as a tool for controlling the quantum state of a two-level atom. In our model system the frequency and coupling strength associated with microscopic reservoir modes are modulated, while the principal features of the reservoir structure remain fixed in time. Physically, this may be achieved by containing a static atom-cavity system inside an oscillating external bath. We show that it is possible to dynamically decouple the atom from its environment, despite the fact that the two remain resonant at all times. This can lead to Markovian dynamics, even for a strong atom-bath coupling, as the atomic decay becomes inhibited into all but a few channels; the reservoir occupation spectrum consequently acquires a sideband structure, with peaks separated by the frequency of the environmental modulation. The reduction in the rate of spontaneous emission using this approach can be significantly greater than could be achieved with an oscillatory atom-bath detuning using the same parameters.
