Abstract

The problem of the irreversible interaction light and matter has a long history. The problem of the interaction light with classical crystals in the self-absorption range is now practically unknown. In the modern radiation physics the problem of the creation damages after optical irradiation the crystals is insufficiently known too. For the resolution of this problem, relaxed optics was created. For the synthesis of all possible phenomena of irreversible interaction light and matter, relaxed optics was created. The basic phenomenological parameters of relaxed optics are as following: chronological parameters; the time of the irradiation; the time of the chaotization, practically the time of the transition the elementary act of the excitation with short-range action to long-range action; the dynamic (practically in general case thermodynamic) time of the system relaxation; the time of life the excitation phase in equilibrium and nonequilibrium states respectively. Relaxed optics is the natural expansion methods of the irreversible physics on optics. The relaxed optical phenomena are in equal parts of modern optics

Problem of coherence in modern optoelectronics and relaxed optics

Petro P. Trokhimchuck, I. Dmytruk

The problem of coherence in modern optoelectronics (MOE) and Relaxed Optics (RO) is discussed. Classical and quantum conceptions of coherence are analyzed. Problem of coherence in RO is represented as problem of creation and change of coherent structures. Other problems of coherence breakdown, including phase coherence, and here applications in MOE and RO are discussed too.

Matter System Irradiated by Coherent Light

Mahito Mabuchi, Hiroshi Nishihara

A study is made of quasi-stationary states in a matter system which is under internal exchange-interactions among atoms and coupled to an electromagnetic field, by using a variational method and a unitary transformation; therefrom a photon coherent state is derived, The coherent state is characterized by a cooperative dipole orientation excited in the matter by a coherent light. The matter-field interaction energy term depends on the phase difference between the matter system and the field. When the phase difference equals zero, the coupled system is in the ground state. A thermal equilibrium of the matter system in the molecular field approximation is also studied. It is proved that a phase transition of the second kind occurs. This transition may be followed by coherent resonance scattering processes, even when the dipole excited state decays with a nonradiative relaxation time which is much shorter than the radiative life time.

Quantum optics

Gennaro Auletta, Mauro Fortunato, Giorgio Parisi A

The behavior of light and its interaction with matter is certainly one of the most interesting phenomena of physics. It has puzzled thinkers and scientists in ancient Greece (Archimedes) and through the Middle Ages, at least since the times of Robert Grosseteste (1168–1235), right up to the theories of Galileo Galilei and Isaac Newton. The classical electromagnetic theory of light (see Tab. 13.1) was beautifully established in the second half of the nineteenth century with the Maxwell equations. Quantum optics is nothing other than the quantum theory of light. It finds its roots in Planck's discovery (1900) that the assumption of energy quantization for a harmonic oscillator allowed us to solve the black-body problem (see Subsec. 1.5.1). The successive early steps that led to the quantization of the electromagnetic field include Einstein's explanation of the photoelectric effect with the introduction of the quantum of light (see Subsec. 1.2.1) and the interpretation of atomic spectra (see Subsec. 1.5.4). Quantum optics is usually not covered by conventional textbooks on quantum mechanics. We include its discussion here for two main reasons: first, because it is a fundamental and advanced application of the basic framework of quantum mechanics, and, second, because in the last 30 years quantum optics has played (and is still playing) a major role in the advancement and understanding of quantum mechanics.

Retarded Electromagnetic Interaction and Symmetry Violation of Time Reversal in High Order Stimulated Radiation and Absorption Processes of Lights as well as Nonlinear Optics - Influence on Fundamental Theory of Laser and Non-Equilibrium Statistical Physi

Mei Xiaochun

Electromagnetic Radiation 20time reversal, for the motion equations of quantum mechanics and the Hamiltonian of electromagnetic interaction are unchanged under time reversal. However, most processes related to laser and nonlinear optics are actually high nonequilibrium ones.As we known that time reversal symmetry will generally be violated in non-equilibrium processes. It is proved in this paper that after the retarded effect of radiation fields is taken into account, the time reversal symmetry will be violated in light's high order stimulated radiation and absorption processes with ml lm BB , although the Hamiltonian of electromagnetic interaction is still unchanged under time reversal. The transition probability of third order process is calculated and the revised formula of nonlinear optics polarizability is deduced in this paper. Many phenomena of time reversal symmetry violation in non-linear optics just as sum frequency, double frequency, different frequencies, double stable states, self-focusing and self-defocusing, echo phenomena, as well as optical self-transparence and self absorptions and so on are analyzed. The reason to cause symmetry violation is that some filial or partial transition processes of bounding state atoms are forbidden or can't be achieved due to the law of energy conservation. These restrictions can cause the symmetry violation of time reversal of other partial transition processes which can be actualized really. These realizable filial or partial processes which violate time reversal symmetry generally are just the practically observed physical processes. The symmetry violation is also relative to the initial state's asymmetries of bounding atoms before and after time reversal. For the electromagnetic interaction between non-bounding atoms and radiation fields, there is no this kind of symmetry violation of time reversal. For example, in the experiments of particle physics in accelerators, we can not observe the symmetry violation of time reversal. At last, the influences of symmetry violation of time reversal on the foundation theory of laser and non-equilibrium statistical physics are discussed. The phenomena of producing laser without the reversion of particle population and transition without radiation can be well explained. The result indicates that the irreversibility of evolution processes of macrosystems originates from the irreversibility of micro-processes.The irreversibility paradox can be eliminated thoroughly.By introducing retarded electromagnetic interaction, the forces between classical changed particles are not conservative ones.Based on them, we can establish the revised Liouville equation which is irreversible under time reversal. In this way, we can lay a really rational dynamic foundation for classical non-equilibrium statistical mechanics.
