Abstract

Basic problems of relaxed optics are discussed in historical, theoretical and experimental retrospective and perspective. The classification of basic relaxed optical phenomena are discussed. The way of possible development the relaxed optics in exeperimental and theoretical directions and its possible applications are discussed too. Few models of irreversible interaction light and solid in self-absorption range are represented and analyzed.

Problem of coherence in modern optoelectronics and relaxed optics

Petro P. Trokhimchuck, I. Dmytruk

The problem of coherence in modern optoelectronics (MOE) and Relaxed Optics (RO) is discussed. Classical and quantum conceptions of coherence are analyzed. Problem of coherence in RO is represented as problem of creation and change of coherent structures. Other problems of coherence breakdown, including phase coherence, and here applications in MOE and RO are discussed too.

Quantum Optics

Marlan O. Scully, Muhammad Suhail Zubairy

The field of quantum optics has witnessed significant theoretical and experimental developments in recent years. This book provides an in-depth and wide-ranging introduction to the subject, emphasising throughout the basic principles and their applications. The book begins by developing the basic tools of quantum optics, and goes on to show the application of these tools in a variety of quantum optical systems, including lasing without inversion, squeezed states and atom optics. The final four chapters are devoted to a discussion of quantum optical tests of the foundations of quantum mechanics, and to particular aspects of measurement theory. Assuming only a background of standard quantum mechanics and electromagnetic theory, and containing many problems and references, this book will be invaluable to graduate students of quantum optics, as well as to researchers in this field.

On the developments and applications of optical microcavities: an overview

Tie Wang

Devices based on the optical microcavities which confne light to small volumes by resonant recirculation are already indispensable for a wide range of studies and applications. This article provides an overview of the development and application of optical microcavities. We frst give a pedagogical introduction to the interaction between a two-level system and a quantized electromagnetic feld in the cavity, based on the so-called Jaynes-Cummings model, which is basic and important theory model in the cavity quantum electrodynamics, and various quantum phenomena and applications of it. Then, we overview three basic types of the microcavity structures, and also highlight the progress achieved so far in these systems. Based on these three structures,we give an account of three representative applications of optical microcavities, and explain their microcavity requirements and the state of the art for these devices, before outlining the challenges for the future.

Laser Cooling of Solids

S. V. Petrushkin, В. В. Самарцев

Laser cooling is an important emerging technology in such areas as the cooling of semiconductors. The book examines and suggests solutions for a range of problems in the development of miniature solid-state laser refrigerators, self-cooling solid-state lasers and optical echo-processors. It begins by looking at the basic theory of laser cooling before considering such topics as self-cooling of active elements of solid-state lasers, laser cooling of solid-state information media of optical echo-processors, and problems of cooling solid-state quantum processors. Laser Cooling of Solids is an important contribution to the development of compact laser-powered cryogenic refrigerators, both for the academic community and those in the microelectronics and other industries. Provides a timely review of this promising field of research and discusses the fundamentals and theory of laser cooling Particular attention is given to the physics of cooling processes and the mathematical description of these processes Reviews previous experimental investigations in laser cooling and presents progress towards key potential applications.

Optical bistability: towards all-optical devices

Eusebio Bernabéu, Pedro Martín Mejías, R Martínez-Herrer

The phenomenon of optical bistability is the object of increasing interest owing to its possibilities for important device applications. The object of this short review is to give a description of this current field either from its conceptual theoretical basis or from its applications on optical circuitry and computing. Contents include three sections devoted to optical instabilities, bistable materials and international programs on this topic.

Relaxed optics: The necessity of the creation and problem of the development

Petro P. Trokhimchuck

The problem of the irreversible interaction light and matter has a long history. The problem of the interaction light with classical crystals in the self-absorption range is now practically unknown. In the modern radiation physics the problem of the creation damages after optical irradiation the crystals is insufficiently known too. For the resolution of this problem, relaxed optics was created. For the synthesis of all possible phenomena of irreversible interaction light and matter, relaxed optics was created. The basic phenomenological parameters of relaxed optics are as following: chronological parameters; the time of the irradiation; the time of the chaotization, practically the time of the transition the elementary act of the excitation with short-range action to long-range action; the dynamic (practically in general case thermodynamic) time of the system relaxation; the time of life the excitation phase in equilibrium and nonequilibrium states respectively. Relaxed optics is the natural expansion methods of the irreversible physics on optics. The relaxed optical phenomena are in equal parts of modern optics
