Quantum electrodynamics of optical solitons for communication technologies

V.V. Kozlov

Published Nov 1, 2003• 12 citations
Publisher

Abstract

The theory of quantum optical solitons is casted into a framework which is characteristic to studies in quantum optics. This approach allows us to discuss the preparation and measurement of quantum state of a soliton in practical terms. Also given are basic principles of quantum communication via optical fibers.

Summary form only given. The study of quantum properties of soliton pulses in fibers spans the full range from basic research to applications. New developments in high precision quantum interferometry and quantum communications will be reported as well as novel aspects of the range limit due to losses.

Definition and construction of the quantum soliton states in optical fibers

Duan Lu-ming, Guo Guang-Can

An explicit and reasonable definition of the quantum soliton states in optical fibers is given. Based on this definition we construct the quantum soliton states from the exact solution of the quantum nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. The dispersion effect of the quantum soliton is also exactly analyzed.

Information and Communication

Radhika Vathsan

The most successful practical applications of quantum mechanics in information theory have been in the field of communication. This is a very old field that has taken inputs from engineering, pure mathematics and computer science apart from physics. It is only natural that application of quantum techniques here should be among the first to be considered and implemented. Modern technology in optical communication using laser light and optical fiber cables is sufficiently advanced that it can quickly be adapted to using photons as the quantum carriers of information.

Spatial Optical Solitons: Guiding Light For Future Technologies

Yuri S. Kivshar, George I. Stegeman

An overview of the basic properties of optical solitons was presented. Solitons exist by virtue of very strong nonlinear coupling between radiation and matter. They are also a manifestation of a wave particle duality on a macroscopic scale, exhibiting both particlelike and wavelike properties. The advantages of the solitons for designing smaller all-optical logical gates were also discussed.
