Abstract

The technology of optically controlled delay of light in optical fibers is attracting so much attention recently in view of its flexibility, easy operation and ability to accelerate the development of the modern optical communication. In this paper,we review the research progress of time delay controlled by light in fibers. The basic principle of optically controlled velocity of light is introduced.Several new technologies of time delay via nonlinear effects in optical fiber are emphatically described, such as Stimulated Brillouin Scattering, Stimulated Raman Scattering,Optical Parametric Amplifier,Wavelength Conversion,Soliton Collisions,Coherent Population Oscillation etc,and analyzed the advantage and disadvantage of each method. Finally, the significance and development prospect of this research are discussed.

SBS slow light using a novel optical fiber doped with nanoparticles

Ying Zhang, Peilin Lang, Ru Zhang

As the key of these all optical techniques which would be widely used in the future optical fiber communication, the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) slow light draws a great of attention and shows several advantages over other slow light methods. With recent growth of nano-technology, researchers are hoping to improve the nonlinearity of the optical fiber by using the nano-technology. According to this current situation, a numerical model of the SBS slow light and three typical experiments are discussed. A novel optical fiber doped with nano material as InP is manufactured and introduced into the SBS slow light, serving as the nonlinear medium of SBS process. And the numerical simulations are performed to validate our method. The results show a considerable time delay of the optical light can be achieved through this novel optical fiber.

A Review of Slow- and Fast-Light Based on Stimulated Brillouin Scattering in Future Optical Communication Networks

Ronny Henker, Andrzej Wiatrek, Kai-Uwe Lauterbach +4 more

Slow- and Fast-Light has been investigated during the last years as a powerful tool to reduce and increase the group velocity of light pulses by light. It has enjoyed much recent interest because of the practical applications for telecommunication and information systems. Among these are optical signal processing, radio frequency-photonics, nonlinear optics and time domain spectroscopy. Furthermore, it can be seen as a key technology for optical delay lines, buffers, equalizers and synchronizers in packet switched networks. For a realization, there are different methods and material systems possible. Among them the nonlinear effect of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is of special interest. This article gives an overview about the fundamentals and some experimental results of the Slow- and Fast-Light effect based on the SBS in optical fibers.
