Image Encryption Using Phase-Based Virtual Image and Interferometer

Abstract

In this paper, we propose an improved optical security system using three phase-encoded images and the principle of interference. This optical system based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer consists of one phase-encoded virtual image to be encrypted and two phase-encoded images, en-crypting image and decrypting image, where every pixel in the three images has a phase value of '0'and' $\pi$ '. The proposed encryption is performed by the multiplication of an encrypting image and a phase-encoded virtual image which dose not contain any information from the decrypted im-age. Therefore, even if the unauthorized users steal and analyze the encrypted image, they cannot reconstruct the required image. This virtual image protects the original image from counterfeiting and unauthorized access. The decryption of the original image is simply performed by interfering between a reference wave and a direct pixel-to-pixel mapping image of the en crypted image with a decrypting image. Computer simulations confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed optical technique for optical security applications.

Optical Security System Using Phase Mask and Interferometer

Jong‐Yun Kim, Gi-Jeong Kim, Se‐Jun Park +4 more

In this paper, we propose a new optical security technique using two phase masks based on interferometer. A binary random phase image is used as a reference image and the encrypted image is generated according to the phase difference between the reference image and the original image. If there is no phase difference of a same pixel position in two phase masks, interference intensity of the pixel has minimum value and if phase difference of a same pixel position in two phase masks is , its interference intensity has maximum value. We can decrypt the original image by putting two phase masks on each of the two optical paths of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Computer simulation and the optical experiments show a good performance of the proposed optical security system.

Interferometric phase-only optical encryption system that uses a reference wave

Dong-Hoan Seo, Soo–Joong Kim

An improved image decryption system is proposed that is based on phase-encoded images and the principle of interference and uses a reference wave. A novel technique for generating intensity patterns from the decrypted phase information consists simply of interfering a reference wave with the wave passing through the encrypted image and a phase-only decrypting key. Optical experiments have confirmed the proposed technique as a simple and robust architecture for optical encryption.

Optical security system using multi-phase separation and phase-wrapping method

Shin Chang Mok, Kim Soo Joong, Seo Dong Hoan

In this paper, we proposed an optical security system based on a gray-image exclusive-OR encryption using multi-phase separation and phase-wrapping method. For encryption, a gray image is sliced into binary images, which have the same pixel value, and these images are encrypted by modified XOR rules with binary random images. The XORed images and the binary images respectively combined and converted into full phase images, called an encrypted image and a key image. For decryption, when the encrypted image and key image are used as inputs on optical elements, Practically due to limited controllability of phase range in optical elements, the original gray image cannot be efficiently reconstructed by these optical elements. Therefore, by decreasing the phase ranges of the encrypted image and key image using a phase-wrapping method and separating these images into low-level phase images using multi-phase separation, the gray image can be reconstructed by optical elements which have limited control range. The decrytion process is simply implemented by interfering a multiplication result of encrypted image and key image with reference light. The validity of proposed scheme is verified and the effects, which are caused by phase limitation in decryption process, is analyzed by using computer simulations.

Fourier optical cryptosystem using complex spatial modulation

Tamás Sarkadi, Pál Koppa

Our goal is to enhance the security level of a Fourier optical encryption system. Therefore we propose a Mach–Zehnder interferometer based encryption setup. The input data is organized in a binary array, and it is encoded in the two wave fronts propagated in the arms of the interferometer. Both input wave fronts are independently encrypted by Fourier systems, hence the proposed method has two encryption keys. During decryption, the encrypted wave fronts are propagated through the interferometer setup. The interference pattern of the output shows the reconstructed data in cases where the correct decryption Fourier keys are used. We propose a novel input image modulation method with a user defined phase parameter. We show that the security level of the proposed cryptosystem can be enhanced by an optimally chosen phase parameter.

Image-decrypting common path interferometer

Jesper Glueckstad

A new scheme for parallel optical decryption and the display of encrypted image information is presented. The scheme is based on a common path interferometer configuration providing a simple and robust optical setup. Images are encrypted directly during recording by use of a combined phase encoding and phase scrambling method. The encoding and encryption does not require sophisticated, iterative and time consuming optimization algorithms. Pixels are independently encoded and encrypted by use of a simple look-up table technique that can be performed in milliseconds on a standard personal computer. Optical decryption can subsequently be implemented in the common path interferometer by use of single phase or if desired a combined phase/amplitude key. An advantage of the presented method is that the encrypted image may selectively require recording and decryption of phase values or amplitude values or a combination thereof. Another advantage is that decryption is performed in a plane adjacent to the encrypted mask or an equivalent plane whereby generation of speckles in the decrypted image is strongly suppressed. Finally, there is no requirement of positioning a decrypting mask or spatial light modulator in the optical Fourier plane whereby an accurate three dimensional positioning requirement can be avoided.

We propose an encryption method using visual cryptography and virtual phase images. In the encryption process, the original image is shared by virtual images and the decryption key image. We multiply the virtual phase images with each complex image, which has the constant value of its sum after performing the phase modulation of the virtual images and the decryption key. The encryption cards are made by Fourier transforming the multiplied images. It is possible to protect information about the original image because the cards do not have any information from the original image. To reconstruct the original image, all the encryption cards are placed on each path of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and then the lights passing through them are summed. Since the summed image is inverse Fourier transformed by a Fourier lens, the phase image is multiplied with the decryption key and the output image is obtained in the form of intensity on the CCD plane. Computer simulations show a good performance of the pro-posed optical security system.
