Abstract

We propose an encryption method using visual cryptography and virtual phase images. In the encryption process, the original image is shared by virtual images and the decryption key image. We multiply the virtual phase images with each complex image, which has the constant value of its sum after performing the phase modulation of the virtual images and the decryption key. The encryption cards are made by Fourier transforming the multiplied images. It is possible to protect information about the original image because the cards do not have any information from the original image. To reconstruct the original image, all the encryption cards are placed on each path of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and then the lights passing through them are summed. Since the summed image is inverse Fourier transformed by a Fourier lens, the phase image is multiplied with the decryption key and the output image is obtained in the form of intensity on the CCD plane. Computer simulations show a good performance of the pro-posed optical security system.

In this paper, we propose an improved image encryption and decryption method using a virtual image and a joint transform correlator (JTC). The encrypted image is obtained by the Fourier transform of the product of a virtual-phase image and a random-phase image, and a Fourier transform of the decrypting key generated by the proposed phase assignment rule is used as the Fourier decrypting key. Based on the solution, the original image is reconstructed using JTC in the frequency-domain. The proposed method using a virtual image, which does not contain any information from the original image, prevents the possibility of counterfeiting by unauthorized people. And also the auto-correlation terms, which are the drawback of a JTC system, contribute to reconstructing the original image rather than to disturbing its identification. But because phase-only encryptions are sensitive to noise and scratches, phase errors can be generated in fabricating the encrypted image or the Fourier decrypting key so the errors that are responsible for degradation of the quality of the reconstructed image are analyzed and the solution is demonstrated. Computer simulations show the solution, and the proposed method is very useful for JTC architecture.

Most optical security systems use a 4-f correlator, Mach-Zehnder interferometer, or a joint transform correlator(JTC). Of them, the JTC does not require an accurate optical alignment and has a good potential for real-time processing. In this paper, we propose an image encryption system using a position shift property of the JTC in the Fourier domain and a random phase image. Our encryption system uses two keys: one key is a random phase mask and the other key is a position shift factor. By using two keys, the proposed method can increase the security level of the encryption system. An encrypted image is produced by the Fourier transform for the multiplication image, which resulted from adding position shift functions to an original image, with a random phase mask. The random phase mask and position shift value are used as keys in decryption, simultaneously. For the decryption, both the encrypted image and the key image should be correctly located on the JTC. If the incorrect position shift value or the incorrect key image is used in decryption, the original information can not be obtained. To demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed system, computer simulation is performed. By analyzing the simulation results in the case of blocking of the encrypted image and affecting of the phase noise, we confirmed that the proposed method has a good tolerance to data loss. These results show that our system is very useful for the optical certification system.

Image Encryption Using Phase-Based Virtual Image and Interferometer

Dong-Hoan Seo, Soo-Joong Kim

In this paper, we propose an improved optical security system using three phase-encoded images and the principle of interference. This optical system based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer consists of one phase-encoded virtual image to be encrypted and two phase-encoded images, en-crypting image and decrypting image, where every pixel in the three images has a phase value of '0'and' $\pi$ '. The proposed encryption is performed by the multiplication of an encrypting image and a phase-encoded virtual image which dose not contain any information from the decrypted im-age. Therefore, even if the unauthorized users steal and analyze the encrypted image, they cannot reconstruct the required image. This virtual image protects the original image from counterfeiting and unauthorized access. The decryption of the original image is simply performed by interfering between a reference wave and a direct pixel-to-pixel mapping image of the en crypted image with a decrypting image. Computer simulations confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed optical technique for optical security applications.

In this paper, we propose an improved image encryption and decryption method using a phase-encoded virtual image and interference. An original image is simply decrypted by interfering a reference wave with the wave passing through a decrypting key and the encrypted image, where every image has grey level. The proposed encryption is performed by the multiplication of an encrypting key and a phase-encoded virtual image which dose not contain any information for the original image. Therefore even if unauthorized people analyze the encrypted image, they cannot reconstruct the original image. Also grey image encryption can improve the encryption level compared to binary image encryption. Computer simulation and optical experiments confirmed that the proposed technique is a simple for optical encryption.

Single Path Phase-only Security System using Phase-encoded XOR Operations in Fourier Plane

Phase-only encryption scheme using exclusive-OR rules in Fourier plane and a single path decryption system are presented. A zero-padded original image, multiplied by a random phase image, is Fourier transformed and its real-valued data is encrypted with key data by using XOR rules. A decryption is simply performed based on 2-1 setup with spatial filter by Fourier transform for multiplying phase-only encrypted data by phase-only key data, which are obtained by phase-encoding process, and spatial filtering for zero-order elimination in inverse-Fourier plane. Since the encryption process is peformed in Fourier plane, proposed encryption scheme is more tolerant to loss of key information by scratching or cutting than previous XOR encryption method in space domain. Compare with previous phase-visualization systems, due to the simple architecture without a reference wave, our system is basically robust to mechanical vibrations and fluctuations. Numerical simulations have confirmed the proposed technique as high-level encryption and simple decryption architecture.

In this paper, we proposed an optical encryption method based in the concept of visual cryptography and interferometry. In our method a secret binary image was divided into two sub-images and they were encrypted by ‘XOR’ operation with a random key mask. Finally each encrypted image was changed into phase mask. By interference of these two phase masks the original image was obtained. Compared with general visual encryption method, this optical method had good signal-to-noise ratio due to no need to generate sub-pixels like visual encryption.
