Abstract

In this paper, the numerical studies on optical-bistability phenomena in third-, fifth-, and seventh-order nonlinear periodic media are presented. By cross-phase modulation with strong Gaussian pump, the continuous-wave probe transmission that operates in bistability regime can be permanently switched from low to high and vice versa using the property of the unstable state. While there is only one hysteresis in the third-order nonlinear periodic media, double hysteresis are observed in the nonlinear-transmission characteristics of pi phase-shifted periodic media with third-fifth and third-fifth-seventh-order nonlinearities. In the context of double hysteresis, unique-bistability regime is defined where the high state can be reached as input comes from low to high with fast enough rise time such that the output rises above the unstable state during its transient. Finally, all-optical transistor operation is shown as a prominent application of optical bistability based on the unstable-state principle

Bistability threshold inside hysteresis loop of nonlinear fiber Bragg gratings

Yosia Yosia, Shum Ping, Chao Lü

We show the Cross Phase Modulation (XPM) effect between CW probe that operates in bistability region and strong Gaussian pump in a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) by Implicit 4th Order Runge-Kutta Method. The XPM effect results in three unique nonlinear switching behaviors of the probe transmission depending on the pump peak intensity and its Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM) value. From this observation, we offer the FBG three potential nonlinear switching applications in all-optical signal processing domain as: a step-up all-optical switching, an all-optical inverter, and an all-optical limiter. The bistability threshold that determines the nonlinear switching behaviors of probe transmission after Gaussian pump injection is defined numerically and shown to be equivalent to the unstable state inside hysteresis loop.

All-optical transistor operation based on the bistability principle in nonlinear distributed feedback GaInAsP-InP waveguide: a transient perspective

Yosia Yosia, Yoichi Akano, Kazuhiko Tamura +2 more

We demonstrated all-optical transistor operation based on the bistability principle in nonlinear distributed feedback GaInAsP-InP waveguide. By increasing the pump power above a certain limit, the probe transmission that operates in the bistable regime can turn from switching to transistor mode. The unstable state is shown to play a crucial role in distinguishing the probe transmission artifacts between switching and transistor mode.

Multiple-scale analysis of optical bistability in semiconductor periodic structures

Kiarash Zamani Aghaie, Mahdi Rabbani, Mahmoud Shahabadi

Multiple-scale analysis is employed for the study of nonlinear wave propagation in periodic layered media. In a first step, wave propagation in each individual layer is modeled by a corresponding equivalent nonlinear transmission line. The multiple-scale analysis is then employed to establish a system of nonlinear equations for the amplitudes of the forward and backward waves in the transmission lines of the model mentioned. This system of nonlinear equations is solved with the aid of a continuation technique for derivation of transmission characteristics of the periodic structure. To study optical bistability, a parameter-switching algorithm is utilized for obtaining the solutions of the system including both stable and unstable ones. For the sake of verification, we have also utilized a nonlinear finite-difference time-domain (NFDTD) method to analyze the wave propagation in the aforementioned structure. While there is an acceptable agreement between the bistability results obtained using our method and the NFDTD, there is a considerable difference between our results and the ones derived using the conventional coupled-mode theory.

Optical bistability in nonlinear long period fiber grating

Vishal Jain, Santosh Pawar, SHUBHADA KUMBHAJ +1 more

The nonlinear phenomena of optical bistablity is investigated analytically in chalcogenide glass long period fiber grating. Using the basic sets of nonlinear coupled mode equation the expression for the transmittivity of grating has been derived under nonlinear Kerr regime. To examine the bistable charateristics of the grating, the operating wavelength is considerd slightly above the resonance wavelength of 1550 nm i.e. for off resonance condition where detuning parameter δ≠0. It is observed that the intensity of the transmitted wave increases with increasing input intensity and reaches its maximum value at particular intensity. On gradual reduction of the input intensity, the transmitted intensity does not retrace the same path, resulting in a hysteresis loop. This hysteresis loop shows that the LPFG supports the occurrence of optical bistability.

Optical bistability in semiconductor periodic structures

Jian‐Jun He, Michael Čada

A theoretical demonstration of optical bistability in periodic layered media, particularly in long-period GaAs/AlAs superlattices is presented. The proposed structure consists of a periodic multilayer system, as opposed to previously demonstrated nonlinear bistable devices which employed Fabry-Perot etalons. The optical resonance effect which is essential for bistable devices is, in this case, induced by a refractive index modulation. The nonlinear active medium is distributed in the whole structure rather than placed between the two mirrors of a Fabry-Perot cavity. It is shown by a complete calculation of wave propagation in the periodic nonlinear medium that a multiple valued feature appears in the structure's nonlinear reflectivity spectrum. The input/output characteristics of the structure exhibit bistable hysteresis similar to that of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon.>
