Abstract

Using the framework provided by the mixed state representation, we numerically study the thermal behavior of a spinless bose system with a short-range repulsive interaction. The main aim of this work is to elucidate the character of the transition from a condensed phase to a non-condensed phase in a homogeneous system. Under the approximation of dilute density, the transition appears to be first order. A consistent treatment gives rise to a second-order transition.

Imperfect Bose System and Its Mixed State Representation. I: Thermal Equilibrium State of Imperfect Bose System

A. Kuriyama, João da Providência, Y. Tsue +1 more

An imperfect spinless bose system is studied with use of the mixed state representation, which was originally developed to study highly excited nuclear states. With this representation, the degrees of freedom are classified into two types: One describes the thermal behaviour of the non-condensed boson and the other mainly describes the dynamical aspects of the condensed boson. The entropy of the system is specified by only the former type of degrees of freedom. Comparison is made with the conventional results for a dilute bose gas with an interaction of the hard sphere type.

Imperfect Bose Gas with Hard-Sphere Interaction

Kerson Huang, Chongming Yang, J. M. Luttinger

The method developed in the previous paper for the treatment of the quantum-mechanical $N$-body hard-sphere problem is applied to a calculation of the grand partition function of an imperfect Bose gas with hard-sphere interactions. The grand partition function is calculated to second order in an expansion in powers of $\frac{a}{\ensuremath{\lambda}}$, where $a$ is the hard-sphere diameter and $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ the thermal wavelength. The approximate equation of state for the gas phase is thereby obtained by calculating all the virial coefficients to order ${(\frac{a}{\ensuremath{\lambda}})}^{2}$.The first-order energy levels obtained in the previous paper embody some interesting physical properties. A fictitious system with exactly such energy levels is considered. The partition function for such a system can be calculated exactly and the exact equation of state obtained. It is shown that there is a phase transition, which more closely resembles an ordinary gas-liquid transition than the Bose-Einstein condensation.

1/ N -expansion for the critical temperature of the Bose gas

Orest Hryhorchak, V. Pastukhov

We revised the large- N expansion for a three-dimensional Bose system with short-range repulsion in normal phase. Particularly, for the model potential that is characterised only by the s -wave scattering length a the full numerical calculations of the critical temperature in the 1 / N -approximation as a function of the gas parameter a n 1 / 3 are performed. Additionally to the well-known result in the dilute limit we estimated analytically the leading-order strong-coupling behavior of the Bose-Einstein condensation transition temperature. It is shown that the critical temperature shift of the non-ideal Bose gas grows at small a n 1 / 3 , reaches some maximal value and then falls down becoming negative.

Coherent State Combined with Mixed State for an Imperfect Boson System. II: -- Static Solution and Elementary Excitation --

A. Kuriyama

The thermal equilibrium state and elementary modes of excitation are investigated for a spinless boson system with a contact interaction. In a homogeneous infinite system, the elementary mode associated with the bose condensation with 0 momentum is automatically damped. In a semi-infinite cubic system, there appear bound states in the semi-infinite direction for a free end condition on the finite side and then two-dimensional modes with a phonon-like spectrum.

Bose–Einstein transition temperature in a dilute repulsive gas

Markus Holzmann, Jean-Noël Fuchs, Gordon Baym +2 more

We discuss certain specific features of the calculation of the critical temperature of a dilute repulsive Bose gas. Interactions modify the critical temperature in two different ways. First, for gases in traps, temperature shifts are introduced by a change of the density profile, arising itself from a modification of the equation of state of the gas (reduced compressibility); these shifts can be calculated simply within mean field theory. Second, even in the absence of a trapping potential (homogeneous gas in a box), temperature shifts are introduced by the interactions; they arise from the correlations introduced in the gas, and thus lie inherently beyond mean field theory – in fact, their evaluation requires more elaborate, non-perturbative, calculations. One illustration of this non-perturbative character is provided by the solution of self-consistent equations, which relate together non-linearly the various energy shifts of the single particle levels k . These equations predict that repulsive interactions shift the critical temperature (at constant density) by an amount which is positive, and simply proportional to the scattering length a ; nevertheless, the numerical coefficient is difficult to compute. Physically, the increase of the temperature can be interpreted in terms of the reduced density fluctuations introduced by the repulsive interactions, which facilitate the propagation of large exchange cycles across the sample.

Short-range particle correlations in a dilute Bose gas

Alexander Yu. Cherny, Arkady A Shanenko

The thermodynamics of a homogeneous dilute Bose gas with an arbitrarily strong repulsion between particles is investigated on the basis of the exact relation connecting the pair correlation function with the in-medium pair wave functions and occupation numbers. It is shown that the effective-interaction scheme, which is reduced to the Bogoliubov model with the effective pairwise potential, is not acceptable for investigating the short-range particle correlations in a dilute strongly interacting Bose gas. In contrast to this scheme, our model is thermodynamically consistent and free of the ultraviolet divergences due to accurate treatment of the short-range boson correlations. An equation for the in-medium scattering amplitude is derived that makes it possible to find the in-medium renormalization for the pair wave functions at short boson separations. Low-density expansions for the main thermodynamic quantities are reinvestigated on the basis of this equation. In addition, the expansions are found for the interaction and kinetic energies per particle. It is demonstrated that for a many-boson system of hard spheres the interaction energy is equal to zero for any boson density. The exact relationship between the chemical potential and in-medium pair wave functions is also established.
