Abstract

The effects used for quantum Josephson digital-to-analogue (D/A) conversion are discussed. The dynamics of an overdamped Josephson junction (JJ) driven by a series of short 2/spl pi/-pulses of programmable intensity and repetition rate is described. The results are presented both analytically and in graphical form.

Josephson junction array driven by modulated optical combs

We have performed an experiment to drive an over-damped Josephson junction array (JJA) with modulated current pulse trains, which are generated by a modulated optical comb (an ultra-short pulse laser). The intensities of optical pulse trains are modulated using a pulse pattern generator. We quantitatively verified that the output voltages of the JJA were consistent with the modulation signals.

Pulse driven Josephson voltage standard using modulated optical comb

Chiharu Urano, Nobu‐Hisa Kaneko, Masaaki Maezawa +2 more

We have performed an experiment to drive an overdamped superconductor-insulator-normal-insulator-superconductor (SINIS) Josephson junction array (JJA) with modulated current pulse trains, which are generated by modulated ultra short optical pulses. Averaged voltage outputs of the JJA have been systematically measured for various modulation patterns as a function of the bias voltage of an optical modulator. Quantized voltage steps has been clearly observed in accordance with modulation patterns under certain condition of the bias voltage of the optical modulator.

The performance of programmable voltage signals that exploit the quantum behavior of superconducting Josephson junctions continues to improve and enhance measurements in metrology, communications, and quantum control. We review advances in pulse-driven digital synthesis techniques with Josephson-junction-based devices. Quantum-based synthesis of voltage waveforms has been demonstrated at frequencies up to 3 GHz and rms amplitudes up to 4 V. Josephson pulse generators have also been used to control and characterize superconducting qubits.

Overdamped Josephson junctions for applications to precision measurement

V. Lacquaniti, Domenico Andreone, Matteo Fretto +6 more

Overdamped Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb Josephson junctions are an intermediate state between the SIS and SNS Josephson junctions. With a proper choice of fabrication parameters, stable and reproducible nonhysteretic curent-voltage characteristics have been obtained Featuring critical current densities up to 70 kA/cm2and characteristic voltages up to 450 μV at 4.2 K, overdamped junctions are suitable for many aplications ranging from RSFQ electronic circuits to programmable and ac voltage standards. Tests on single junctions arrays of series-connected junctions have shown a suitable behaviour when driven by a microwave with frequencies around 75 GHz. The quantized steps have proven to be stable and flat at nV level. These junctions also shown an improved temperature dependence, which can be interesting in view of the development instrumentation with an integrated quantum voltage reference operated in a closed cycle refrigerator.

Modeling of a long Josephson junction coupled to SFQ elements

Yongming Zhang

By combining a long Josephson junction (LJJ) with single-flux-quantum (SFQ) circuits, new digital applications for long junctions can be explored. To fully investigate the dynamics of the hybrid LJJ/SFQ circuits, a numerical model was developed for an unshunted long junction coupled to shunted SFQ Josephson transmission line (JTL) through superconducting strips. The model is based on a one-dimensional array of Josephson junctions that is described by a set of discrete sine-Gordon equations. Simulations support our experimental observation that the first zero-field step can exist when the LJJ is terminated by SFQ elements. The influences on the first zero-field step by the self-inductance, the critical current, and the shunt resistance of JTL cells are studied in detail. Simulation also confirms that each 4/spl pi/ phase leap at the end of the long junction creates two separated SFQ pulses after several overdamped JTL cells.

Ultimate performance of the RSFQ logic circuits

Oleg A. Mukhanov, Vasili K. Semenov, Konstantin K. Likharev

A new family of dc-powered Josephson junction digital devices, the Rapid Single Flux Quantum (RSFQ) logic, is described. The devices use overdamped Josephson junctions and two-junction interferometers to store, pass and process the digital information presented in form of single flux quanta. We have carried out extensive numerical simulation of the dynamics of the RSFQ logic gates and of some more complex circuits including serial full adder and reversible shift register, within the standard microscopic-theory ("Werthamer") description of Josephson junctions. The minimum clock cycles of the basic RSFQ circuits turn out to be as small as 2.5 ps. The most promising ways to use the RSFQ logic circuits at the present stage of development of the Josephson junction digital technology are discussed.
