Abstract

A rigorous diagrammatic description of stochastic wavefunction evolution for electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and inversionless gain in coherently driven three-level systems is developed and applied to transient and steady-state conditions. Wavefunction trajectories are illustrated for cases that include A and V-type EIT, shelving and dressed-state resonances.

Ultra-narrow electromagnetically induced transparency and inversionless gain in a ladder-four-level system

Li Yongfang, Sun Jian-feng, 陕西师范大学物理学与信息技术学院,西安〓710062

In this paper, we study the effects of Rabi frequencies and multi-path radiation on the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and the inversionless gain in a ladder- four-level system driven by two-coherent fields- The Rabi frequencies of the field-driven transition from the upper level to middle levels play an important role for the realization of the ultra-narrow EIT and inversionless gain- Different excitation mechanism can change the position of the EIT- The action of the spontaneous alignment of the dipole moment is investigated- The explanation for the numerical results is presented using the theory of dressed state

Transient properties of an electromagnetically induced transparency in three-level atoms

Yongqing Li, Min Xiao

We describe the transient behavior of an electromagnetically induced transparency in three-level atomic systems. When the coupling f ield is switched on, the absorption for the probe field is oscillatorily damped to its new steady-state (transparent) value. Transient gain without population inversion and enhancement of dispersion are discussed. A realistic system for experimental testing of these effects is presented.

Perturbing an electromagnetically induced transparency in a Λ system using a low-frequency driving field. I. Three-level system

Eric Wilson, Neil B. Manson, C. Wei +1 more

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance in a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ configuration is obtained when the frequencies of two fields are close to resonance with two of the transitions and their frequency difference matches the frequency of the third transition. In this situation the spectrum of one swept field as a probe gives a simple transparency feature. However, when an additional field drives the third transition the EIT feature associated with the probe is split. This perturbed EIT is illustrated for both single and bichromatic driving fields. In the single-driving-field case a density matrix treatment is shown to be in reasonable agreement with experiment, and in both single and bichromatic cases the structure in the spectrum can be explained using the dressed-state formalism. The dressed states can also be used to account for subharmonic resonances observed in the strong-probe regime.

Comparison of electromagnetically induced transparency in lambda, cascade and vee three-level systems

Surajit Sen, Tushar Kanti Dey, Mihir Ranjan Nath +1 more

We discuss the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in lambda, cascade and vee type three-level systems where the Hamiltonian and the Lindblad term of each configuration are expressed in the SU(3) representation. At steady state, the Optical Bloch Equations of each configuration are solved to obtain the dispersion and absorption profiles of the probe field along with their group velocities. When the EIT condition is achieved at resonance, the population oscillation shows which of the bare states are contributing to form the dark state. Our study reveals that the dark state for the lambda and cascade system effectively coincides with the lowest bare state of that system, while for the vee system, it is a maximally superposed state of the middle and upper bare states.

Full Quantum Theory of Transient-State Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

Kuang Kuang, Le-Man, Zeng +2 more

We develop a full quantum theory of transient-state electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in thevapor of three-level A-type atoms interacting with probe and coupling lasers. As applications of the full quantum theory,we show that transient-state EIT medium exhibits normal dispersion and find that group velocities of both coupling andprobe lasers are greatly reduced. It is shown that the group velocity of the probe laser in the transient-state EIT case isequal to that in the adiabatic EIT case and that the coupling laser group velocity in the transient-state EIT is generallyless than that in the adiabatic EIT.
